Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

What Members Are Saying (AI-Generated Summary)

Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

People, help!

Just logged into my next class - Ethical Decision Making. OMG! Is that the class itself or is it the professor? There is only 5(!) points for every DQ, 20 for participation, but in order to get those 20, you must answer CAT question. Plus, the CLC consist of two group papers (plus everyone does individual interviews), which are graded in two separate weeks. And, the last week DQ killed me! It has 6 questions within and a case study.... And all of this is for 5 points? :banghead: I probably need a break.... :blackeye:

If anyone can suggest something on this class, I would greatly appreciate that.

Should I drop or change the professor? I have G.M.G. now....

Sounds like one that I had for a different class, but asked for very similar things. I felt like everyone was so concerned with doing citations in their responses it became nothing but reading regurgitated literature. I knew 3 others in that class from previous classes and we all felt the same way. We did what we needed to in order to pass, but felt like the teacher did not teach us anything other than how to be creative in word vomit.

She actually opened up midway through the class with a CAT, asking us about what we thought about the class and what we would like to see different. Yeppers, I was that one that stuck my neck out there. I came right out and told her that if we were in a traditional class we would not be regurgitating literature, but having thoughtful, substantive discussions that benefited everyone learning from not only her, as an instructor, but from each other as well. Was afraid that it would be reflected in grading, but it was not.

This to shall pass.....

I think that is really a difference between an online class and a b/m classroom. In a class we would have a rousing conversation on a topic and be done with it. We can't do that online..really.

They also want your brain to be open to research and be comfortable finding quality research to back up your findings, thoughts, opinions.

All of these classes and how they are taught make sense at the end, so take heart. It isn't all for nothing.

Sounds fairly familiar to me. We were marked down for using the word "it" as in "it went away" instead of "the book went away". Our instructor also expected more academic writing and we had to write at a minimum 12th grade level.

You would never know it here, but my writing vastly improved in that class, lol.

Thanks tokmom!

It feels easier when you know you are not the one :)

I changed professor and now I know the answer to my question - IT IS THE CLASS!!! :(

The same amount of points, the same CLC (which completely freaks me out!); the only difference is - no CAT with this prof.!

If anyone knows any professor for Ethics that will not make your life a hell for the next five weeks, please, PM me! I have two suggested names, but none of these professors are available for upcoming class...

Hi happy, read my responses to ro one page back - the class is the class is the class; all assignments, points, and rubrics have to follow the university's syllabus and are carved in stone, they cannot be altered. The only thing that will differ from one Ethics class to another is if the Prof throws in a CAT or has specific requirements on how they want the DQs answered (references/no references, word count, etc.) and their individual APA quirks. Those are the things I used to scan for in the Announcements before the class started. Good luck, it definitely can be frustrating :wacky:

Hopefully the switch will be beneficial. I'd rather have a CAT and an open instructor who was amazing than one who was rarely around and a hard a$$ grader. :(

Yeah, I agree, but you won't know how fair/easy/tough instructor grades until you submit a paper :)

OMG! I feel like I need a break. I took four classes in a raw and research is the last one (I am in it now). Does not seem like a lot, but I feel like I am too stressed about Ethics, because of not having a rest )))))

P.S. tokmom, thanks for prof.!

Hi Prism! Thanks! I posted and then read )))) this is not encouraging. . . When I saw those FIVE points I almost fell down from my chair! I think it is not fair, so much work and so little points  I liked 15 for each DQ more :cat:

Thanks for the reply Prism!

I cannot believe the 5 pts. My DQ #2 was over 1,000 words with 5 references. I gotta put a stop to my madness!

I am an overachiever but not usually this bad and I can tell already from comments she has made to others that she is gonna be one tough grader....

I had to smile while reading your posts. I felt the same about the set up of the discussion questions. I had 3 classes so far that required 4 days participation not just the 3. I kind of got used to it and it isn't a big deal for me anymore. I post my initial DQ posts on Monday. Tuesday I post 2 responses to DQ1. Wednesday I post once to DQ1 and once to DQ 2. And Thursday I post twice to DQ2. After that I do not check in again unless I have to hand something in or participate in the CLC project. I learned it doesn't matter as long as the required days are met.

I too post 800-1200 word DQ topics. I have gotten really good at it. I never give a reference in the DQ responses because I never make a new point, I just talk about how I see this in my practice or how the topic affects me. Never had a problem with this. Finding references for a DQ topic is easy, just quote the weekly lecture notes and the class textbook. Done..... Wait till the dry discussion posts in Statistics! Just do what you need to get by there.....

Good luck. If I can do it, then you can...

Happy,

I am finishing Ethics this week and what you are saying sounds about right. I will PM you the name of my instructor. The class is a little time consuming and I took it with Spirituality which I do not recommend doing. If you are taking it alone, you will be fine!

Thanks Puddles!

Yup, it is like reading the same regurgitated lit over and over and over again in the forum - Groundhog Day!! How many times can I read people saying the same thing over and over again? Yes, I get it according to all the studies breastfeeding is more beneficial than bottlefeeding!! I would much prefer and learn more from reading about other student's personal nursing experiences.

All I can say is I hope this chick ain't teaching no other class (and I will run like crazy if I see her name).

So nice to be able to vent on here.
