Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
Any tips for into to research week 2 literature summary?
I finished this paper at the last minute because of some serious motivation issues (4, 12's and one 8 hr shift in one week really zapped me - Paycheck was nice though). All I did was follow the outline to the letter and it kind of wrote itself. I printed out the topic paper and just went one section at a time. I made sure that the articl I was writing on was clear and well written, not all study articles are like that.
Any specific questions? I haven't received a grade yet so I can't tell you if it was successful.
Hi, i am on class #5, welcome!!

Thanks Rob. I am sure I will have questions
Just started third class (Health Assessments) and instructor is a real piece of work! She is requiring us to participate 4 days instead of usual 3 days. The participation policy states 3 days and what was reiterated to me by my advisor when enrolling was also 3 days. Have any of you had an instructor that required you to post on more than the 3 days?
Also, my other instructors gave 15 points for each of the 2 DQ answers and this beauty is only giving 5 points per DQ answer. With all the work that goes into answering a DQ, 5 points hardly seems worth it. Plus, she wants every participation post to have a citation/reference. Typically, I post substantive posts but they may not always have anything that requires a citation and I have always received full credit (I don't post like the others who write "I agree" and just rephrase what they are commenting on - I always go above and beyond). Having to research and come up with stuff to cite every time is time consuming and a big pain. Multiply it by the extra participation day she wants....equals one big pain in the ***!!!!
Hi ro
That's going to be the norm for dq, here on out. Citations and references for your dq and your response to others, as needed.
The dq in patho is worth 20 points, so the points do vary.
As for participation, I had a few that wanted us to check in at the minimum of 4 days, but we didn't have to post. You may want to clarify with your instructor.
Hi ro, that does stink about the 4th day, I never had that. I also never ran across those extra DQs that some people have mentioned their instructor threw in there - they're called a CAT I think? My Capstone prof had them but they were not required as others have had, they were optional and I actually liked hers because they were basically just asking how you felt about the week's assignment. Got participation points for answering those every week instead of just the same ol' same ol' to other students.
About those 5pt DQs though... that's not your prof, that's the class. I just looked back at mine and yep, they were 5 pts. They vary from class to class and range all the way from 5 to 40. All classes have to have the same DQ/assignment point values and rubrics, so I guess the only thing they can get creative with are the DQ substantive requirements
Oh, somebody already asked her and she wants posts (no just checking in!). He was the brave one and said what I am sure we were all thinking. He asked in a nice way why she was having us post 4 days since none of our instructors had asked for greater than the 3 days. He basically said between all of the papers, projects, DQs, work and home life, why the extra posting day? She said she is trying to prevent a student from front loading the forum and then disappearing for the rest of the week and sorry for the inconvenience....
Well, gee sorry if some of us try to get our 3 days out of the way so we can focus on the dreaded group project or paper that is due on Sunday! Believe me, there are still plenty of people who typically post their participation posts up through Sunday. Plenty of activity goes on throughout the week.
So far our instructors encouraged us to include personal points of view or share from work experience and not always require a citation for every post. Of course, I am talking about thoughtful posts - not just the "idiot posts" that you see some people post.
Oh well, guess it is gonna be a real fun 5 weeks...
Thanks for the reply Prism!
I cannot believe the 5 pts. My DQ #2 was over 1,000 words with 5 references. I gotta put a stop to my madness!
I am an overachiever but not usually this bad and I can tell already from comments she has made to others that she is gonna be one tough grader....

That's ridiculous. You're right, there are plenty of ppl still posting their DQ answers at 2359 on Wed & Fri (my specialty ), and then ppl replying to those right up until Sunday MN. It shouldn't matter if your participation is all on M,T,W, it's still the 3d, and people may disappear because they're focusing on their weekend assignment.
I know it's too late now, but these are the things tokmom taught us early on - read through your prof's announcements on the Friday before class, and if they've tossed in their own spin on something that you don't think you can deal with for the next 5 weeks, BAIL.

You are definitely on the correct forum here...
We should retitle it to "Overachievers Who Simply Cannot Stop Themselves"

Sounds like one that I had for a different class, but asked for very similar things. I felt like everyone was so concerned with doing citations in their responses it became nothing but reading regurgitated literature. I knew 3 others in that class from previous classes and we all felt the same way. We did what we needed to in order to pass, but felt like the teacher did not teach us anything other than how to be creative in word vomit.
She actually opened up midway through the class with a CAT, asking us about what we thought about the class and what we would like to see different. Yeppers, I was that one that stuck my neck out there. I came right out and told her that if we were in a traditional class we would not be regurgitating literature, but having thoughtful, substantive discussions that benefited everyone learning from not only her, as an instructor, but from each other as well. Was afraid that it would be reflected in grading, but it was not.
This to shall pass.....
