Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Yeah, what Beauty asks. I have wondered what the MSN program consists of. More CLC assignments?

Mommao - I had been out of school for 30 years. It comes back to you, like riding a bicycle. It is amazing how much better I write now compared to my first class.

When I am done with the class I start on Monday I am halfway there. Before you know it, you will be saying the same thing.

i have been reading about the capstone class and on my schedule I do not have to take the research class (taken previously 15 yrs ago) I am very concerned over this.. How significant do you feel the classes relate? Could you written your final paper without the class, because essentially I have forgotten it all.

Since we are discussing instructors that rock, I have to tell you that the "unknown" instructor I have for research is incredible. She is everything I think that an instructor should be. She responds to almost half of the discussion posts with actual responses that are not just cut and paste generic responses. She has had an ongoing conversation in the individual forum about picking research studies for this class and my capstone. And all discussions are meaningful and responsive (and long... not short or one word answers).

I can't wait to see how she grades and what feedback I will get. I think I have a keeper here!! AND, she teaches every nursing class except for stats......

Please share.. I tried to figure out how to PM you, but alas I am somewhat computer challenged and imagine I'm going to start GCU tomorrow, I have unique issue that I have completed 1/2 BSN 15 yrs ago, so I will be accelerated through some classes and need some additional electives and maybe 2 MSN class, I'm a little concerned. I do not have to take Intro to Reasearch but have to write a Research paper?? I have emailed them, not sure I can pull that off.

Thank you in advance...

Hi momma, regarding APA… I had never (as in ever) even heard of APA when I started this program, much less ever written a paper in it. I bought the PERRLA program ($30 I think), so that saved me from having to worry about any of the margins and page headers and whatnot. It was the other rules, that PERRLA doesn't help with (when to write sixty vs. 60, etc.), that I had to learn on my own. I bought the hardcopy APA 6th book (blue one), and it has never left my side. It's all beat up; coffee stains, eared pages, you name it. I don't remember how much I paid for it but whatever it was it was worth it. Yes, you can google rules, and you usually end up on the OWL website which is good, but I wanted the book. GCU has a template for those that don't buy PERRLA, but I tried that once and I much preferred PERRLA.

Yes, it can absolutely be done without taking the Research class, you just need to figure out on your own how to find good articles, figure out what they're telling you, and how to summarize them correctly. I would read the PageBurst research e-book if you have it, or buy an Intro to Research that focuses on Nursing Research in particular, and then get to be good friends with the GCU librarians – they are unbelievably fantastic. Good luck, you can do it!

Thank you so much for the response. I was sweating the $1500 or the poor grade. I will get PERRLA right away and try and figure how to summarize articles correclty, gulp.

Yes I will share this info but only through a private message. It looks like you do not have enough forum posts to be able to utilize the private messaging. Go post around the forum and I will send it to you gladly. I think you need a total of 15 posts or more.

I laughed hard at this, because tonight the hubsters asked if we could finally have our dining room table back... I looked at it, all covered with reams of paper, highlighters, coffee cups, gum, earplugs, headphones, and more and more papers. I said "everything can go but the blue book, I never would have made it without that guy and I'm keeping him!"

The PTSD may not wear off if you hear this...Yes there are CLC's in the MSN program. Did that not make the PTSD come back, okay....those same lame slackers are in the CLCs for the MSN program!!!! Got that first hand from the CNO the other day when I was a quizzing fiend. She said they don't care because they know someone is going to make that assignment happen! Made me      all over again!!!! I don't want to ever do another stinkin' CLC, talk to me in the fall!
