My current nightmare is ... I can't find the door to get out at shift change.

What are your nursing nightmares?

Specializes in Mental health, substance abuse, geriatrics, PCU.

I have 2 recurring nightmares. One is where I make it to the end of the shift and have forgotten about a patient and haven't seen them all night. The other is where I'm at the nurses station and I have all this work to do but I keep falling asleep. I always wake up very stressed with both if these dreams.

Lol that is a horrible nightmare.

I once had a dream that I was getting in the elevator and my arm got stuck in the door and was ripped off.

Another nightmare that I have frequently is a patient chasing staff with a shotgun, and every place I find to hide he always finds me.

Are there any dream interpreters on AN?

Smoking pot in the nurses station.

The cast varies from dream to dream, but often between shifts I'll spend my whole sleep being cursed out non-stop by whoever the nastiest patient on the unit is. I wake up already in a terrible mood.

From what I understand, cardiacfreak, we are the best interpreters of our dreams. The way in which you feel toward and object or person in your dream can tell you what your subconscious is attempting with which to deal.

When we dream of others, that individual is a representation of a certain part of our personality.

And, of course, situations in dreams are symbolic to real life circumstances.

I have the first one with the addition of I cannot locate their room. And then there's the one where I have to pee and the bathroom is out of order and I am trying to climb over the bedpan hopper thing...

For me it's the one where I discover a whole bunch of patients at the end of the day that I have never laid eyes on all day and I have to explain why. Or the one where I find out all my patients are some building offsite, so I have to go out of the building to take care of them then I can't figure out how to get back in.

I can see the patient(s) in my dream that need my help but I can never get to them; doors close in my face right when I've almost reached them. Other patients that need me pop up in the way. I can't find the room. I'm in the wrong building. I'm constantly running frantically trying to find the patient. Awful feeling and I have these types of dreams pretty regularly.

That's another dream... have to pee, no time.. no place. Luckily.. I can still wake up and make it to the toilet. So far..so good, it's only 10 feet.

I had a really strange one the other day! In the dream my patient needed some kind of treatment that required me to count every single hair on my head and I kept losing track and having to start over. The other nurses and doctors couldn't understand why it was taking me so long and the poor patient was just staring at me as I failed to help her. I think the dream might have happened because I was on an ortho floor that day so I had to pull and count a lot of narcotics. I woke up so stressed and panicked until I realized that it didn't actually happen!

I don't remember if I told this one on AN or not, but I once had a nightmare that I was walking down the hallway at work and one of our little tiny old ladies was shuffling slightly behind me. Suddenly, the lights went out and it was pitch black. I could see absolutely nothing. I stopped and frantically attempted to find the little old lady because I didn't want her to get hurt.

I could feel that I was touching her and then I realize she has the fingers on both of my hands in her mouth and she is biting down hard. And not only could I sense enormous pain, I could also sense that she was something much more malevolent. I can see nothing but black.

Terrified and in pain, I manage to reach my thumbs out to gouge her eyes and make her let go of my fingers... but I could feel this little old lady, this evil thing did not have any eye sockets! It had no face at all but the teeth biting off my fingers!

I woke up trying to scream. My husband was all concerned and stuff, but when I got to the part where an old lady monster with no eyes was biting my fingers off, he could not stop laughing. Thanks, Honey.

One more: I had a dream I was walking down the hall (again!) and that my night was so stressful, I could feel my heart racing, then becoming very irregular and then beginning to stop.

As my heart began to stop, I began to pass out and fall to the floor. As I was going down to the floor, I thought, "This is it" and I guess I died, because I woke up at that point.
