I can't wrap my mind about this....
I understand she said "No laptops!" But "NO TEXTBOOKS OPEN DURING MY LECTURE OR I WILL STOP & WAIT FOR ALL BOOKS TO BE CLOSED!"
I disagree and will refuse to join her class for many reasons...
You can not micromanage how your students study.
The textbook is used as a reference during the lecture. How many times have I corrected my teachers in their lectures by referring to my textbook?
It is not in SCHOOL POLICY, anywhere on paper that says this.
How do I bring this up to school in hopes they will tell her she does not have a right to do that?
And what are your thoughts? Do u agree or disagree?
Not to be mean, but since many of us are siding on the side of the instructor, the OP may not want to return.OP - nursing school is really tough. Being a nurse is really hard as well. There will be policies that you do not personally agree with in your work. This is life. If you want to make change, be an agent for change. Abide by the rules, research what you want changed to really see if change is feasible. Some people will change other not.
Your class is only a semester, pass the class and move on. You do not need a book for lecture, this is the rule. Abide by the rule, play the game and graduate from nursing school.
Good Luck, hopefully you can find a healthy outlet for the stress of school.
Also, as nursing students we're constantly reminded to read or review before class anyways so no need for a textbook >.>
As a second go around student I think this prof would be great. To me it sounds like she wants students to learn and actually focus. I find it irritating aND distracting doe others to bring computers cuz they are always on Facebook etc. And textbooks are distracting also. People not paying attention ends up being noisy and many students being noisy and moving is distracting and can be a hard environment to focus in.
OP, I think you will make it very far if you learn to think ahead of the irritant your nursing instructor has become to you. You're an adult, and while I understand in certain circumstances in nursing school you will be babied until you can be weaned, I DO NOT think its ok to tie the tie the leash that short. Students have their groove and the reasons stated on here as to why she is justified to disrupt your groove other than "it's her classroom" doesn't make sense to me being that her students are ADULTS.
Listen to me when I tell you it WOULD NOT BE WISE to make a splash about this. Don't do it! Here is your chance to develope some critical thinking skills. Why can't you read ahead and then photo copy only parts of the textbook that make the least sense or is the most perplexing and then follow along with that in class while doing to to the photo copy what you would do in your textbook?
I know I'm really late to this party - don't know how I missed this thread the first time around...
But the OP's instructor is actually adhering to EVIDENCE-BASED instructional methodology. There is a ton of research on cognitive load that clearly shows learning will be decreased if a student is attempting to read (highly complex visual activity) and absorb the content of a lecture (auditory & visual). If said student is leafing through the book trying to make marginal notes (related to the lecture) in appropriate places in the text.... YIKES!
Evidenced-based Best lecture technique? Provide students with an "organizer" (e.g., outline) on which to note key points as they are listening.... follow it up with a discussion to clarify & 'lock in' the concepts. Best overall technique? "Flipping the classroom" - students read all the material ahead of time & classroom time is devoted to interaction (case studies, discussion, debate, etc) to enforce and apply learning.
