This will be my first experience being a nurse during what could turn out to be a catagory 3 hurricane. I work ON the coast. My hospital literally has a view of the entire beach. I'll be there as the storm is making landfall.

Any other nurse experience being a nurse on duty while a hurricane is hitting? What was your experience like?

Im also concerned because I feel going to work is mandatory and I'm not sure what to do with my mom whom is a senior now and has no one else but me here in Texas.

When I mentioned Americanism and being American, it does not take away from other countries.

Please, this is not a thread for politics, so to the user that made assumptions about MY thoughts

Please back off the politics, I'm not in the mood.

It took away from others because you left others out. As I said, I'm sure you are emotionally wound up and tired, it just hit me the wrong way when you left others out. To me it's not political, it's just folks.

This is an interesting thread. Current events, history, you name it. Most importantly, it's Cardiac Dork's thread and terrible experience; he doesn't have to mention the whole world. Very few of us are going through this disaster, and Cardiac may well be quite rested and not emotionally wound up.

Cardiac, I hope all is going as smoothly and safely as it can, despite the rain storm still coming down. & I hope you keep updating us!!

It is political. And this is not the place. You are assuming I'm wound up. You are assuming I'm tired. You're assuming all these things. And you're not the one in my position.

So why don't you stop over analyzing the fact said I'm proud of my fellow Americans?

Give ME a break. It hit you the wrong way? Really? I'm SO sorry it offended you ... :gasp:

Maybe I can swim to you and give you solace.

Thinking of you up here in Dallas and following closely..I am so near and yet so far. Wishing I could do more.

During hurricane / superstorm Sandy a nurse who was on her way to work lost her two toddler boys to drowning when her car was hit by flood water.

I personally will never forget the waves crashing in the street. The boats crashing into houses.

Maybe I have PTSD, but there is no way I would go out in a hurricane without assuring safety for myself and family first.

The Cajun Navy is on the way! Hang in there!

All of us in New Orleans truly feel for you.

Cardiac, I'm in eastern NC so we get hurricanes fairly frequently thanks to our geography. About a third of my town was underwater when Matthew hit and my kids didn't have school for a week because roads were impassable. Some of my patients in clinical (I was still in NP school) had to be rescued in the middle of the night from their beds because the water rose so quickly....and those folks obviously lost everything. We thought that was bad, and it was.

I already have a healthy respect for what hurricanes can do, and even I am just flabbergasted at what you guys are dealing with. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all, and I will donate what I can to aid in relief/recovery efforts. Whether it's time & presence to aid cleanup or monetary donation to help the boots on the ground, my family will do what we can to help our Texas brothers and sisters.

Peace and love.

Thanks CD for your story and continued updates - that's what AN is all about - nurses sharing their stories.

I admire you so much. Your level headedness during this disaster is certainly telling of your spirit and fortitude.

And...you are so right this is America and we should be proud of the way our neighbors, friends and strangers help out in a disaster!

Thanks again for sharing....

This is so catastrophic. I'm following closely. Please keep us posted as to how you and others are coping. I sent a donation yesterday to the Red Cross.

Resources are mobilizing nationally. I know some of my coworkers (in Virginia) serve on emergency teams for various agencies (e.g. FEMA). They have been called up and are deploying.

So ... as CD has reported ... help is on the way.
