Nursing, is it god's work?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

The original poster is someone who doesfeel that it was a calling. I am asking that those who do NOT share the original posters sentiments please walk away from this thread and NOT use it as a forum to debate the issue.

This is not a new topic for debate, please, if you want to debate it start a new thread (or better yet, revive an old thread).

Ok here is a new thread.. read this..http://www.atheists.org/

"God" is not offensive...what is HIGHLY offensive are the superior attitudes exhibited quite frequently on this BB by "Christian" nurses towards those who have different faiths.

Well said!

ITA furball!!!! The MOST dedicated Christians I know practice their faith quietly, altruistically and without any ceremony. AND some of the greatest healing influences I have met are neither Christian or believe in any diety.

To each his/her own. How bout this? I won't squash your faith if you won't stand on a soapbox over me. Sounds fair.

Sounds fair to me! :)

PS Isn't there a verse somewhere in the bible about not wearing your religion/faith like a medal to be shown off?

yep, Jesus tells a story about a Pharisee man who goes out on the street corner to pray, boasting about how much money he gives, how he has such a great standing in society and how he is so thankful that he is not like the lowly tax collector praying a few feet away. I always remember this story, its got a lot of lessons in it. :D

While this thread really needs to get back to the topic, a small aside.

A few weeks ago, a member that has had issues with me, was having a mild flame war with several of us as targets. Said individual, knowing that I was Jewish, brought US support of the State of Israel into another thread (a comparison that was neither called for nor appropriate as an analogy). I had a suspicion that I was being baited and drawn into a fight.

You know what. I stepped back and didn't bite.

It would have been very easy to have argued the issue. But I am annoyed that anyone would so equate Judaism = Israel, and that someone was trying just to bait me for whatever purpose. And I also admit that I had baited them a bit earlier, in said thread, and that was wrong.

Sometimes, we all just have to step back and not let posters with "personal" agendas get to us, and there are times when that it REALLY difficult for this hard headed gal. Because when we let them get to us and we sink to their level, we are letting them win.

And now back to topic at hand......well maybe.

As I understand it, the original question was whether or not nursing is "God's work". The idea of "calling" is secondary.

For those who find God to be an offensive word, I would just suggest : truth hurts.

One does not have to be religious to be kind or compassionate.

True.

But, I don't understand how a person can look at the marvelous complexities of the human body without acknowledging the design of creation. Where there is design, there is a designer.

I don't have enough faith to NOT believe!

this is when someone gets an earful from me.

dont assume you can dictate to me or anyone else on this planet what to believe and what not to believe. i can look at the human body and see an interesting organism, but i dont see "god's handiwork" anywhere in it.

EDIT: because i saw the steam comin out of my ears it is wasnt pretty.

:(

Wish there were more posters here who would self-censor like that , Geek. :)

I like the old saying: "Lord, help me to keep my words sweet and kind, because someday I just may have to eat them!"

Whitecaps, I agree with what you say about the marvels of the human body, however if I were a nonbeliever, I would find the statement: "For those who find God to be an offensive word, I would just suggest : truth hurts." offensive. It smacks of "you're wrong, and I'm right, SO THERE!", which is NEVER the way to win people to your point of view.

"But, I don't understand how a person can look at the marvelous complexities of the human body without acknowledging the design of creation. Where there is design, there is a designer."

Not that old chestnut! That point of view reflects a woefully anthropocentric worldview. Design implies a purpose. It presumes that we are the pinnacle of God's achievement and the rest of the universe was designed either to make us, or to make things nice for us.

" The believers in Cosmic Purpose make much of our supposed intelligence, but their writings make one doubt it"

"If I were granted omnipotence, and millions of years to experiment in, I should not think Man much to boast of as the final result of all my efforts" Bernard Russell

Donmurray, I studied biology in university, and I had a very hard time swallowing the theory of evolution. I find ALL life a miracle, not just the human body, which is not that different in design from the bodies of other mammals. Scientists themselves are beginning to question their long-held beliefs about "random selection by chance mutation." There was even an article in Life magazine about ten years ago, entitled "Darwin in the Dock at Little Rock" which summed up the [very scientific] reasons why evolution is being questioned.

And please, if anyone wants to argue THIS subject, let's NOT do it here. Another thread, in Off Topic would be the best venue, if anyone wants to debate another very controversial topic (evolution vs. creation).

Ah the levels of intolerance shown both sides of the issue. You do not see as I see, you do not believe as I believe, therefore you are to be obliterated so as not to offend me.

Ktwlpn, I think you believe that I was the mod who requested the thread be locked. Nothing could be further from the truth. I wanted the thread to stay open, but it was getting nasty. One poster said that he/she felt 'being called' sounded like a 'bunch of hooey'. That is being extremely disrespectful to the person who started the thread (Nevada) and to those of us who feel we were 'called' to be nurses.

Here are my feelings re: debates of this type. I like what Winston Churchill once said. I'm not sure of his exact words, but they were something like this: "I may disagree with what the honourable member says, but I will defend to the death his right to say it." This, IMO, is the essence of democracy.

I

"Will we give only Christians an open forum here?" No, Ktwlpn, far from it! Most of the Christian threads started on this board in the time I've been here have been locked, exactly for the reasons I stated above. The Christian Nurses thread is the sole survivor, and the current thread was started by an atheist. THAT is what I am angry about.

r

Jay-jay-I am sorry if you misinterpreted my post-nowhere did I say you were responsible for closing the original thread and I believe that everyone was trying to be as respectful as possible of each other's feelings while disagreeing."Hooey" might not be the word others would have choosen but it's a pretty tame one.... By re-opening that thread the mods are insuring that everyone has a voice...Bravo! No need to be angry-the second thread may have been started by an "atheist" but it's purpose was the continuation of the discussion... No-one is saying that all threads started by "christians" are inappropriate but that there is a "christian" thread to share that type of sentiment with posters whom agree.... Back on topic-I have a problem with the following passage------ "And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick." I believe He is also sending us for this same purpose. Please note that it is not only to heal the sick but also to preach the kingdom of God first.

--------------------------------Am I mis-interpreting this? "Preach the kingdom of God first? I don't agree...Hang the dopamine drip now please=pray for me later......My GOd is so much kinder and gentler then the one that many so-called Christians espouse...He believess that all of us are good-including homosexuals,Jews,Muslims..that's the problem I have with elitist religious groups....And I believe that come Judgement Day many self-proclaimed "Christians" are going to get a BIG surprise....While they sit outside the pearly gates and watch the rest of us walk through.....
