Nursing diagnosis "altered energy field"

"Altered energy diagnosis"

Do you support this NANDA diagnosis? Or do you feel that this diagnosis threatens the legitamacy of our profession? Nanda still stands behind it. What are your thoughts?

Grannynurse, don't forget we came up in a different period. What we think is common, today's nurses never heard of! I'm a Zen Baptist but work with 40 different cultures. Knowledge is a great thing to have!

Did we really. Or did we grow up in an era where knowledge was prized for knowledge, that other cultures impact on peoples behavior, that it was our responsibility to understand other cultures and religions. We grew up in the civil rights era and that may have been the major difference.

I have been thinking of the excuse of having too many things to do, to have time for the emotional things. I have always heard this. Apparently the excuse has not gone out of slyle, the faces are just younger.

I support NANDA in this.......but as much as i live an a strong supporter of eastern/natural medicine, I can NEVER see myself using this nursing dx as an RN. I feel it would be too hard to uphold in court if ever called. what would your nursing interventions be with this nursing dx? just curious .......

now that i've read the entire thread.......i'm sorry for my above post. thank you all!!!! I love it!!!

Granny, don't mistake our displeasure with esoteric nursing diagnosis' as a reluctance to meet our patient's emotional needs. We can and do treat emotional needs as a matter of course. We use touch and tone of voice and care and compassion. We use humor and empathy and appropriate conversation. We encourage and give hope, answer questions and build trust. We just have a problem when someone tries to describe our care as treating energy fields or shooting healing rays out of our fingertips. And please don't assume you're smarter or better informed than the rest of us. You just come off sounding smug. IMHO

I hold a AAS in Nursing, a BSN, A MS. I have taken graduate level courses in rehab, nursing, religion, ethics, modern history to name a few. The reasons for this being a desire to broaden my knowledge base. I general took one course a semester.

Informal Education

I read a wide variety of non fiction books covering a wide variety of topics. I am currently reading a book written by a Christian conservative, supporting his point of view and what is wrong with the left and Democratic Party. My family has said they fully expect to find me dead, with a book in my hand. I read in bed, when cooking, in the bathroom, on the bus, train, plane, in the car, when not driving, waiting to be seen for an appointment, waiting to pick up my grandchildren at school. When I go out for a meal alone. You catch my drift don't you?

I have lived in Germany and Japan. I have traveled extensively in this county, Central America and the Far East, being exposed to different cultures and religions. Prior to travel, I have always read about the area I am going to visit. Owing to the areas I have worked in and the nature of my work, I have been exposed and read about a number of non traditional religions as well, to learn how they impact on my patients.

I realize I am more widely read then most.

Very well said. Kindness is something that I'd like to think flows from me because of my character, not because it's the appropriate intervention for some BS nursing dx. Others may disagree ... just my :twocents:

nursing diagnosis:

altered energy field secondary to misalignment of 7th and 5th chakras as evidenced by -2 reading on the chakrometer.

interventions:

1. consult pts horoscope daily and plan medication schedule and activities accordingly

2. keep hob at 20 degrees to better maintain balance of 5th and 7th chakras

3. rearrange room to corrospond to pts personal fen shui in order to create harmony and balance of yin yang

:chuckle :roll :roll :roll :chuckle now that's a diagnosis worth hearing about in report every morning to get us nurses all "energized" before we hit the floor running......or is it skating now. :uhoh21: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

........................i can just see a student nurse will fail the clinical because s/he can't "feel" the energy of the patient. either that they be honest or they play along like in the harry potter series where they just play along with the astrology prof to pass.................................

:rotfl: nurse standing over patient with eyes closed and hands outstretched over patient to pick up patient's energy field saying "just a moment ms/mr/miss doe. i'm doing my assessment of your energy field now." :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Now THAT is arguably the most logical post in this entire thread.:) Congratulations, and thank you.

I toyed with not posting my educational background and life experience, however I took the inquiry as an honest one. I really could care less if you find my posting, regarding my background, as smug or an implication that I am smarter or better informed then yourself. I am well read and well educated, through my own efforts. As for a reluctance to meet your patients needs, it is not a esoteric exercise on my part, it is a response to postings claim too many physical demands and not enough time to engage in emotional support, i.e. meeting spiritual needs. If you are able to meet your patient's emotional needs, while performing other nursing tasks, then you are doing what hopefully you were educated to do.

Wow!

Don't be overly impressed. I had the opportunity to travel thru the military, both as a child and as an adult. I have always loved reading. And education has always been a top priority with me. Anyone can take a college course per semester, even those with children. My daughter and now my grandchildren think it is funny that grandma has homework. My oldest granddaughter and I spend time on the computor together, doing research for various classes. And we gather around the table to do our homework together, although I do do reading with the two younger ones, while helping them.

You get out of life, what you put into it. For me, education, reading, travel, experiencing other cultures, has always been important. It is an importance that I past on to my daughter and now my grandchildren.
