Hello!
If anyone else applying for the nursing corps scholarship 2015-2016 is anything like me then you've been googling like crazy trying to find out information on how to apply or what they need or even previous years winner. Soooooo.....if anyone is applying this year around or previously has and was or wasn't accepted please tell me your experience! Here are my stats PLEASE share yours if you'd like....
maryland full time nursing student.
VP of my local student nurses association
1st semester done ( :) ) asking for 2 years assistance
GPA 3.44
EFC 0000
4 years of community service in underserved communities
Yeah, each essay is 5,000 or less. When I pulled up Word, two pages double spaced is about 4,000 characters. So I guess 3/4 page single space makes sense. I wish I could do an accelerated program. I really do. It's just not feasible for me being a single mom. I wish you the best of luck. I heard it's tough but doable!
julieberg, I just accepted your request for the Nurse Corps Group. I've been busy with studying for the ATI and doing assignments so I apologize for the lateness. Everyone is pretty friendly in that group so feel free to ask questions.
In regards to how long essays had to be....mine ended up to be a page for each of my 3 essays. I say (and it sounds cliche), but really speak from your heart. Really ask yourself why you want to do this. Use any volunteer, work or life experiences you have. Try to make your essays stand out. It took me about 2 weeks to write my 3 essays because I was trying to be original. You've got to think, you have a panel of judges that read hundreds of essays a day. You need something that will captivate them and hold their attention.
I had an EFC of about 1000 and I still got the award. Those who are in tier 1 (EFC 0-1000 or whatever the cut off was) are selected first, then the other tiers follow.
It was easy to get my loans reimbursed...slightly complicated at first because the deadline to return loans for my school had already passed. But they worked it out.
I would apply for 2 years. You want to make sure your tuition gets covered for the length of your program. I applied for 1 year, and I still have to pay back 2 years of my time. So you wouldn't hurt by going for 2 years.
Some people did have to pay a lot in taxes...however, if you get the award, just save up a little bit of your stipend each month so that way you won't have to come out of pocket when tax time hits.
Good luck!
I was wondering how Nurse Corp scholarship works in conjunction with other scholarship offers. I am going to an Accelerated BSN second degree. They have a 12k transfer scholarship based on my GPA (4.0) plus I got a 10k for my specific program and 2k for Phi Theta Kappa. Plus I've applied for many more. If I get HRSA funding would they pay for what ever is left over after the scholarships I already have in place? Or would they pay the full amount and I loose the others, or get the others as excess funds? I am sure many others who have gotten in have been offered other scholarships with all of your impressive academic achievements. I am just not sure it is worth a 2 year commitment just for the stipend amount, if I already have almost a full ride in scholarships. Can anyone offer insights? I am sure my financial aide office can help to. Thanks!

If you don't get an answer on here, I believe there is contact information found in the NURSE corps. website.

Page 12 of the nurse corps scholarship guide details what happens in your situation. I took a screenshot and attached it.
your situation sounds similar to mine. Except I was pregnant when I applied and found out I recieving it two days post partum! Are you full time? That's the biggest thing. Also I feel like everyone on here who applied was overly qualified I think it mainly came down to the essays. I poured my heart into each one. Each a little less than a page but I really let them know who I was and who I want to continue to grow into. If you want to PM me I can try and find my essays and you can see them as a reference if you would like. They want to see that your motivated by your grades, that your likely going to graduate, and that your a genuinely good person. My essays didn't go along the lines of "I volunteered here it made me a better person" they were more of a life story for each and the impacts those experiences had on me and how they pushed me to be better and how that would make me a better nursealso I applied for however many years would cover my entire program because I wanted to be able to focus as much time as I can on my classes and my now 7 month old daughter. It did take me a while to get reimbursed. I think there was mis communication between my school and nurse corps though, so stay on top of your school! Also being a single mom and going to school to be honest I didn't have to pay any taxes back. I also had W2 from other jobs so maybe that factored into it.
Last, I found out two days after my daughter was born so August 6th is when I received the email. However, I think I recieved the credit check from CREDCO sometime in July? Can anyone else verify when they did? Different people heard at different times though so never get discouraged.
Hello, thank you soo much for helping some of us that are new to this.. I just recently gained admission into Duke ABSN program and i really need this scholarship. I would be very much grateful if you can pm r essays , so that they serve as guidelines for me. I reaaly do not know where to start from.
I will Pm you ASAP. Thanks!!!!!!Thanks!!!!!!!
I am applying for the Nurse Corps Scholarship as well. Just found out that I am going to be a father and this scholarship will be a huge help! I don't know if anyone has any advice for the essays - I am currently torn between how much to disclose about myself personally vs. how much to answer the question in a "matter of fact" sort of way (ie. talking about the "mission" of the Nurse Corps from a more philosophical/social justice stance). Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.
