Hello!
If anyone else applying for the nursing corps scholarship 2015-2016 is anything like me then you've been googling like crazy trying to find out information on how to apply or what they need or even previous years winner. Soooooo.....if anyone is applying this year around or previously has and was or wasn't accepted please tell me your experience! Here are my stats PLEASE share yours if you'd like....
maryland full time nursing student.

1st semester done ( :) ) asking for 2 years assistance
GPA 3.44
EFC 0000
4 years of community service in underserved communities
Thanks Moca!I have been doing some research there is one clinic in my town and 2 hospitals and one clinic in the next town over that have jobs listed for HRSA specifically! Plus there are three local correctional facilities and a mental health network that is always hiring. So I think my chances are better then some areas that have shortages.
I assumed that taxes would be factored, but I was wondering you if you have the option to have them taken out at the time of payment like with unemployment? Or do you have to pay them quarterly? That is a great thing to think about!
I appreciate the insights!
I haven't heard of that option. I had them take the maximum out of my stipend each month by claiming 0 even though I have a husband and child. I haven't filed my taxes yet (can you say laaazzzyyy lol) but other ppl were freaking out that they owed +/- ~2k. But each person's tax situation is going to be different so it's hard to advise you on what to do. Just try to think it through and think about long term. When you do your taxes and if you happen to owe taxes back, you can always get put on a payment plan instead of trying to pay in a lump sum.
Yes that is what I think I would do, my husband is an independent contractor so we file his quarterly. Just easier to manage then at the end of the year! I wouldn't say lazy lol accelerated nursing programs are a bit all consuming! You must me so excited to be almost done! Is just the stipend taxed? The pay the tuition directly to the school, right? I need to read more about that part. I've just been obsessing about the application! Very good advise to research the later portion. I've learned so much from this thread! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions I'm sure you are swamped. :)

No, the entire nurse corps scholarship award is taxable. Although the nurse corps scholarship program does not withhold federal, state or local income taxes from a scholar's tuition and fees, the scholar does owe taxes on the value of the entire award.
So the stipend, other reasonable costs award, and tuition that is paid on your behalf is considered taxable. The tuition is paid directly to you school, your stipend and other reasonable costs payment are paid directly to you.
And yes I am so so glad to be done. May 2016 here I come!
I was fishing a little and found this thread on the taxable portion of the scholarship. It says that tuition should be considered as exempt because it is not pay for service income.

I would check with an accountant when you do your taxes or not file electronically in order to ensure getting the correct exemption.
Hey everyone! I'm looking into applying for the 2016-2017 NURSE Corps application. I just got accepted into the Graduate Entry Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program at Ohio State. This means I have a bachelors in a different degree, but am going through this program and will get my RN within the first two years then my masters in the last year, 3 year program.
Questions:
Will my program be a part of the first funding preference? Kind of confused about that since its Graduate Entry but i will graduate with a masters
Is applying for 3 years more competitive?
Can someone explain the taxes on the stipend? I read through the guide but still pretty confused.
Thanks!
Congrats!! Aslong as you are a full time student in that program and you EFC falls under that category than you are first funding preference. Also the years you ask for the scholarship won't effect your chances. You will be scored based on your resume essays GPA etc... The three years your asking for will be written out in your contract so that it shows your agreeing to work the equivalent that they are asking for in the underserved community. also if you are applying for the NURSR Corps scholarship program then the FULL award is taxable... Stipend tuition etc... Anything they give you is taxable. They don't withhold taxes on everything however so come tax time be prepared .... As for just the stipend the taxes withheld from the 1316 amount will be different For everyone. It all depends on how you fill out the tax papers they give you (just like the one you get from a new job where you put down dependent and exemptions and everything) good luck with your program and good luck with the scholarship!
Also, for anyone applying I found this link helpful.....
It is a little dated, so the scoring may have changed but when applying this helped me prioritize and make the strongest application possible.
