would you cross a picket line????

Nurses Activism

Published

Yesterday one of my nursing coworkers told me about some strike in OHIO and that she was going to take a travel assignment to that area..... I am totally happy where I am, but I was kinda wondering what that atmosphere would be like...I feel that everyone deserves healthcare and can understand her position that she goes where the money is but, crossing a picket line???? I just do not think I could do it. Obviously those nurses are in extreme duress to have to strike.....So, what do you all think could you cross a picket line????? I do not think I could.

:chuckle Okay, I'm sorry, that just really tickled me. This is an excellent debate. Carry on. :D

I don't see how you can call jt's stuff rhetoric and then bring up linchings.... Fight on...

Priceless by T

what you dont seem to see is that the whole situation is all of us, CEOs included. It will take all of us working together to facilitate change. But when you divide people up into differing opponent camps, you are sure to fail

Gee, I'm all choked up:sniff:.....How will you help make that happen while your working against it?

You don't want to discuss something like cognitive dissonance, fine I didn't think you would know what it was anyway. I was just trying to get the discussion away from name-calling and focus on something that I'm sure most nurses with your "years" of experience would be aptly equiped to discuss.

When you make jokes(actually a joke should be funny) about drug use, and make referrence to postings from other threads that are not part of the discussion instead of showing some knowledge of the subject as simple as cognitive dissonance, you're telling everyone what you're really made of.

You said it yourself many times, all you're concerned with is money and golf.

You should be able to intelligently discuss such a simple subject with a student and show the expertise you're talkin about.

Don't tell me there are no people in your ER that are not "motivated to reduce discomfort caused by two inconsistant thoughts", so this would be knowledge that a skilled nurse working in an ER or any other level would be able to just "wipe the floor" with me, and even elaborate it in another context.

I was actually surprised that you couldn't.

Well, you know who

You stated that, "laws protect your right to be immoral" in reference to me, I presume. The last time I looked those laws are called The Bill of Rights.. maybe you should familiarize yourself with the actual meaning of those rights.

Maybe you should just go right ahead and make a correlation that you may or may not be talking about:rolleyes:

The Good Samaritan Law that JT refered to was written a couple of hundred years after the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is not law, it is an amendment to the Constitution.

Freaking brilliant.

I'm becoming less surprised as time goes by.

I would have to find out exactly what the strike was about. If it was something I agreed with and/or felt strongly about, then no I could not cross a picket line. But if the people were striking something I did not think was especially important, then I would have no problems crossing. It's all about your morals and what you think is right.

Just quickly read through what has been going on here in the last week. Whee doggies! Discussion devolved to ad hominum arguments. Naughty, naughty, you're no longer on the issue, you're into personalities.

I think it's time to either just go out and have a good rousing fist fight so this discussion can move on, or drop the discussion.

Now that this discussion is dealing with beliefs and values, it's starting to get ugly. The real meaning of workplace diversity is that we all bring our own beliefs and values to the same table. We don't have to agree on beliefs and values, just work together.

I'm outta this one.

Agree with Dr. Kate.

~Wondering who will put this thread back on track~

Discussing what makes someone cross a picket line and what keeps one from crossing is on topic.

Yes,

see short and simple.

My views are mine, my reasons are mine. I feel no need to defend them to anyone!

That would preclude the word "discussion" wouldn't it?

Viewpoints will differ in any good dicussion. If you have a firm belief then it can only add to the discussion and should not be seen as "defending" yourself.

Certainly, if someone states opinion, they mean for it to be debated.

I will agree with you on that point, but I did not state opinion. I stated a fact, so no amount of "discussion" is going to change my mind. If I state "opinion", I say so.
