Nurses with worse spelling than mine are laughable.

Published

I just want to say, if I see anyone not using spell check around here, with a misspelling that I can identify at a glance, I'll be taking you to task. Your name is mud around these parts.

Nurses with better spelling than mine, on the other hand, are obviously anal retentive perfectionists. Or else they are using spell check, the great equalizer.

Obvious grammatical errors will be pointed out immediately. And, I expect you educated people to know that:

Your is a singular possessive pronoun

You're is a conjunction of you and are

Their is a plural possessive pronoun

They're is a conjunction of they and are

Loose means the opposite of tight

Lose means the opposite of win

Any questions? :nurse:

Please don't get me stirred up into "Grammar Queen" mode. I notice grammar and spelling errors all the time and rarely make the mistake of correcting the poster, lol.

Recently, I very gently suggested that in the future, a poster might break up what seemed like a 300 word run on post into paragraphs so it would be more readable. The poster flipped out on me. It was in the nurses and recovery forum and the poster even implied that I might cause her to relapse! :wideyed: So I shut up now. :sorry:

Just call me "see no evil Catmom" lol. :roflmao:

:paw:

I'm headed over to nurses in recovery to do some investigations into the matter! ;)

All right folks! (or is that alright?)

TOS = terms of service, no text/chat speak.

It makes me want to TOSS (lob, fling, chuck, throw) my cookies to have to read what is sure to be the written (typed?) language of the future.

I agree! Although I have to admit my spelling has greatly suffered from auto-correct on the app where I do most of my posting from. And always, it's so obvious once I've hit send. And there's no edit button. :-/

**whoa! There IS an edit option now. Is that new or did I really miss it all these months?

Very happy now.

The edit button is only available for a few minutes after you post. I usually find my errors too late.

Nooooooooooooo! If someone uses d lower-case d to say "the" n the lower-case n to say "and" and dat for that I will make sure the ghost of my 7th grade English teacher Miss Webster will haunt you for all eternity. Strangely, I see it most often in people for whom English is not their first language. I feel like it's just good form to learn a second language the right way before you become proficient at butchering it up.

The thing is, back in the day our English teachers would decry the use of slang and colloquial phrases, but we never changed the spelling of the actual word. If someone spoke in an accent or regional dialect they generally put it in quotes to denote deviation from the norm. This stuff is like a horrible virus infecting the whole linguistic body.

I was just thinking the other day that we have now reached the point where all those little kiddos who grew up with computers and video games had had just about enough time to get through college and med school and are out among us. I was reading an H&P the other day (from an EMR, so he typed it himself), and caught the use of …. b/c … instead of “because”. Really? You typed up that whole thing and used words like choledocholithiasis, endoscopic sphincterotomy and Klebsiella pneumoniae but couldn’t be bothered to spell out because?

Well,to be fair, nurse's notes are not written in exact "English" either.

We still use symbols, like a triangle for "change".

Example of notes in the chart:

Pt had a good day.

This is changing, too, though. With all of our notes computerized, I go through and check boxes, then type a note about anything not covered, in full sentences usually without abbreviations.
