Nurses week Cheap gifts from admin.

So, with nurses week coming up, I was fondly remembering all the neat swag my employer has offered me as a token of their appreciation.

Over the last four years as a nurse I have received -

A calculator that broke in one week,

A fanny pack that was made out of sheet plastic,

A coupon for a free cookie from the cafeteria,

Shoelaces with the hospital logo,

A lunch bag made out of the same sheet plastic as the fanny pack,

And the only gift that was ever usefull, a badge holder like the drug reps give out where your badge is on a string with a spring.

so what kind of gifts does your institution pony up for?

There have to be some worse ones than mine.

We all know that a cheap trinket from our employer will ensure our future longevity with said institution. So what made you stay working where you are.

actually, I have always done alright, got a very nice fanny pack made of canvas (oh no, that was for Emergency RN's week, and I heard the ED attendings put out for those) From the hospitals, t shirts, pens, a calander or sorts. This year, I noted that the secretaries - unit coordinators whatever they are called, all got verrrrry nice tote bags for secretaries days- and of course no one else did, so i am curious to see what they will had out to the RN's we just CUT 1,000 jobs, so it better not be too nice.

Let's see in 1988 I received a key chain that said happy nurses day.

In 1989 I was given a tote bag that had handles that held up until I put my car keys with the key chain inside of it.

In the 90's we had to conserve money so I didn't get much more than a free ice cream from the cafeteria (they only serve one the 2nd full moon of the 7th month in a leap year and then only on the night shift when the cafe is not open.

In 2000 I acquired a pen (taken from stash for the PA's and NP's)

In 2001 I was given a bar of dial soap. (extras on the linen carts)

This year--I am not sure--But I am looking forward to it. I'm hoping for some surgical tape.:biggringi

Many of these posts are so funny but at the same time-- PATHETIC! :( I'd rather the administration do nothing than insult the nurses with these sorry displays! :o

I want to tell you about a Nurses' Week our hospital had a couple of years ago...when we had a VP/HR and a VP/Nsg who really cared.

On Monday we had a health fair...vendors with give-aways like nursing shoes, uniforms, etc., health checks for all, spa treatments, free food and drink. Much fun and a carnival atmosphere.

Tuesday we had breakfast (catered, not from the hospital food service) for the night shift with great food, music, and more spa treatments.

Wednesday we had a catered luncheon for all the nurses (LVN's, CNA's , and even Unit Sec. included). Again, music and awards (MD sponsored scholarships. nursing unit awards). And, last but not least all the RN's names were put in a box and we gave away a 5-day all-expense-paid cruise for 2 people. (RN with 20+ years exp. won that one)

Finally on Thursday we had a "Thank-You" ice cream social for all the employees but with special emphasis on nursing.

A few years pasted....the VP of Nsg retired, the VP/HR was "out-sourced", and pro-nursing administration was replaced by pro-MD administration and a wicked-witch VP of Nsg. So......Last year we had a discounted lunch in the caferteria (hospital food), ice cream social (1-scoop only), and the only RN's got badge holders.

On the brighter side, the VP of Nsg got fired so we are hoping for a little more attention paid to nursing this year!

Let's see, when I worked for the doctor's office we got a really nice lunch, & a dinner out, flowers, cards, didn't get *****ed at for a day(that part was the best :), & got taken out for drinks by one of the drug reps. That happened every year while I was there.

Since then, I have received, ummm, nada!!!!!!!!!

I used to work as a secretary.

Every year at Secretary's Day, we got flowers or the boss would take us out to lunch, and we were expected to grovel with gratitude because they remembered us that week.

Behind the clenched smile, my mind was running - screw the flowers and lunches, give me a decent salary.

The real beneficiaries of these kinds of remembrance weeks are the florists and restaurants.

By the way, at my facility, we are getting a T-shirt.

Again, I am thinking, screw the T-shirt, give me a decent salary.

We are getting ice cream on Monday,A BBQ on friday except the Night shift which will bring themselves a pot luck dinner. My manager will not be giving us her usally photgraphs of the deptment because she didnot have time. In the past we got any trinket that the drug reps could find in their stash. We too are appriciated?

in May we always get our "13th month of pay", aka "vacationmoney".

This is a month's pay (------taxes!), but since all employees get this, is has got nothing to do with nursing really.

We get nothing for this week, but I got a red rose on the 1. of May! How nice!

At my old job, we got Bar-b-que and some junky something. At my new job they are doing things for the nurses all the time. They celebrate our value and worth, and have had a breakfast with lots of gift certs already, and last week pizza parties, then next week, catered lunches, and the Mgrs. got to decide what to order, without $$ restraints. I know how lucky I am after reading these posts!!
