Nurses who smoke

i would like to know anyone's opinion on nurses who smoke. i know someone who works in an outpatient cancer center, and on her breaks she smokes outside while patients are going in and out of the building (and they see her smoking). do you think it is positive for a nurse to smoke, and then educate her patients about not smoking? especially infront of a lung cancer pt??? :stone

this post is just for your view on this issue, and i am a neutral. i have been a smoker for several years, and i will be graduating from nursing school in the spring. many people including my instructors have been so negative towards my smoking, i just want to know what to expect when i get into the work place. are nurses ok with this? i know that its bad for me, and i know i should quit, but thats easier said then done. any suggestions???

it is not positive for anyone to be smoking, but it is her legal right.

do you think that it is "positive" for the professional image of nursing to post on a bb, using many misspelled words?

i would say that it is not a positive image to portray of nursing, but that it is your legal right.

As nurses we should be modeling the lifestyle that promotes health. It's hard for a patient to be educated about preventing heart disease from someone who smokes or who is 100+ pounds overweight.

I don't want to bash anyone, but where I work smokers get to leave the floor and walk outside to have a smoke while we cover their patients. I don't get to leave the floor when I need a break from the floor.

Yes, it ios everyones legal right to smoke. Let's not just point the finger at nurses. How about Doctors, Dieticians, Pharmacists, and all other medical professions. They all have smokers in their ranks. Educated and non-educated people, children, adults, etc. Schools teach about smoking, etc at early ages.

I have watched my wife's grandfather suffer before death with emphysema due to his years of smoking, and aunt w/ a brain aneurysm though to be exacerbated by smoking, friends and family who smell due to the smoke.

I do cystoscopies with trans urethral resection of bladder tumors caused by smoking, and then eventually many need a cystectomy. I just participated in a tracheostomy, bilateral neck dissection with laryngectomy on a guy that had laryngeal Ca from smoking.

I can go on and on.

Why do people smoke? Why can we outlaw Marijuana, and other drugs and allow nicotine to be legal?? (Don't go on about economics, we can greatly improve economics by legalizing pot - just think of the money!!)

This really ticks me off, this happened where I used to work and it isn't fair! :angryfire

As far as nurses smoking (in general), I've always been very surprised at the number of nurses who smoke!

It does not matter how a person spends thier 15 minute break. Anyone can leave the floor so to say, you do not get to leave is not true, you choose to stay on your floor and use the excuse that "smokers get to leave" I have many times watched other nurses patients so they could get off the floor and go shopping in the gift shop, oh and by the way most stay much longer then 15 minutes! Smoking is bad for everyone, but I feel it might be time that nonsmokers stop using it as an excuse.

i'm a smoker x30 yrs now. i don't preach to my ca pts, and i wouldn't even if i didn't smoke. God, i couldn't imagine trying to live up to a holier- than-thou image. it is a disgusting habit but i couldn't imagine anyone being in the position to judge anyone else, regardless of their habits...unless of course, their habits affected or involved others in a negative way. live and let live.

Sometimes the nonsmokers do not get to leave the floor. More than once, I've been told I would need to take my break in the report room or I've been told that I need to wait to go on break or change my break time because the smokers need to go outside in pairs...
