Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?

Published

What is your biggest pet peeve about being in nursing school or things that happened while you were in nursing school???

Don't you hate it when:

you study your *$$ off and still dont get an A!

when you hear nursing students say "ewww thats gross" or "it stinks in here, im gonna throw up" or "ew i cant chage a depends thats so gross" -that drives me nuts! i dont know how these students will make it in the world of nursing....

come on nursing students i know we all have something that really irks us about school (even though we all loooove it!)....

Wow and you want to be/are nurse.....A bit insensitive and ignorant. hmmm, lets see, runny nose all throughout the year, seem like allergies to me not sickeness. Its not there fault they have a runny nose all the time. I would say as a nurse you should be a bit more empathetic.

Geez lighten up a little.. this is supposed to be a NON-judgmental thread. We're supposed to be honest here, right??

I think at this point, my biggest pet peeve would be the cliques. We have several in my class right now. We have the people that have to constantly talk about anything and everything while the instructor is lecturing. We have the ones that have to constantly go on with their own personal stories that aren't really relevant. When ever the stories start going on a tangent, I just take that time to review my notes. I've also managed to develop a skill for blocking out backround noise thanks to the people that have to constantly chat. So as much as they are annoying, they have taught me some skills that may just be useful in the future. Overall, I've learned how to ignore all the things that annoy me so it really doesn't bother me anymore.

The one person in class that has a story about a family member that relates to any or all subjects up for discussion. Must of had a larger family than the Osmonds!

When one degree of nurse proceeds to put down (reapeatedly) another degree of nurse and their job, THEN says "no offense". Yeah, RIGHT.

Clinical instructors who make you feel dumb for asking a question or embarass you in front of your whole clinical group by laughing at you for asking a not so stupid question!

Or hypocritical clinical instructors...they say not to do something then they turn around and do it...grrr....

Some of the replies made me realize that I am not alone.

I can't stand people who arrive late especially like 15 mins before class ends, I'm like why the heck did you show up.

I can't stand the know it all or the person who always has a family story that coincides with the lecture material.

And side bar conversations igg me too. My goodness, for the first time I vented in a thread.

And somene made a comment earlier in the thread that they hate when a person leaves and exam and states in a prissy voice how the Exan was a joke knowing good and well it wasn't for everyone. Usually these are the ones that fail.:rotfl:

So my biggest pet peeve was that although the RN program I attended was part of a larger community college- the grading scale was steeper. In my prerequisite courses 90-100 was an A. In nursing scholl 93-100 was an A. And the best part was anything less than an 80 failed- so although technically you could make 80s the whole way which would make you a B student anywhere else, but it only counted as a 2.0 on your GPA.

Wow, good luck to you. With patience such as yours, I wish you only the best in your nursing career.

Well said!

Again, well said. I'm suprised a nursing student would even THINK to say this! People can't help it if they have colds or whatever. I know I've been one of those people with the sniffles and boy, sometimes no matter what you do, it won't stop, LOL. I guess i'm being a bit defensive because I AM one of those people at times and the last thing I want to do is annoy anybody!

My biggest pet peeve is when an instructor has no idea about the subject their teaching and blatantly says 'I have no idea about Med-Surg, I'm a psych nurse.'

The one student who swears they're always right always shouting out the wrong answer.

The person who talks all through lecture then waits until the last 5 minutes to ask for clarification of the last 4 hours because they weren't listening. Now we're getting out 20-30 mins. later.

And honestly I think my biggest pet peeve is when we have a 2 and a half hour lunch break. The program I'm in costs over $20,000, more teaching and less breaking PLEASE!

again, its not the fact that people have colds that bother me!! its when they sit there and sniffle instead of just blowing their nose! especially during a test or lecture...you are trying to concentrate and sniiiiffffffff...5 seconds later..sniffff....just blow! bring tissues! no offense to the students, nothing against them..but its distracting to me. im sure you dont sit there and sniffle every 5 seconds..im sure you bring tissues and blow your nose! on a normal day i dont care if there are ppl sniffling but when you are trying to concentrate its distracting. I guess im being a bit defensive bc i didnt THINK ANY nursing student would EVER think to make such a sweeping judgement about someone another student. I guess one of my pet peeves is students who judge others when they know nothing about them.

I have a guy in my class and all he does is repeat what the professor says. He used to be a medical student in cuba which is great for him and now hes in nursing school in florida. Geeeeeeeez but that does not give him the right to just repeat everything the treacher says. Maybe if he would say new information it would not be so annoying. Also what he does is let say he does not know the answer he will wait until someone or the teacher says the answer and then say "yup yup huh huh thats right..." I have to listen to this for 6 HOURS!!!!!!

Oh and how about we have another girl who believes that everything should be handed to her. First day of class she made it a point to tell everyone that she had to mortgage her house in order to go through nursing school. And everytime she's told that she has to get something she says "you would think that would be part of your tuition with all that money you pay". Granted tuition is high but hey youre not the only one!!!!!!!!!!!!!
