Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?

What is your biggest pet peeve about being in nursing school or things that happened while you were in nursing school???

Don't you hate it when:

you study your *$$ off and still dont get an A!

when you hear nursing students say "ewww thats gross" or "it stinks in here, im gonna throw up" or "ew i cant chage a depends thats so gross" -that drives me nuts! i dont know how these students will make it in the world of nursing....

come on nursing students i know we all have something that really irks us about school (even though we all loooove it!)....

I have only been in nursing classes a few weeks, but I have noticed a girl in my class asks questions. To me, they are not out of the ordinary questions, not everyone in our class has been employed in health care before. Well....there are a certain group of girls that work together at a local hospital and every time the girl asks questions, they roll there eyes and act all huffy. I just want to tell them to lighten up, not everyone knows everything like they do.

*stepping off soapbox now*

I am taking pre-reqs for an LVN to RN program. My pet peeve is that we have to learn stuff that we will never use as nurses. Identify 25 different types of tissue under the microscope?? Excuse me, I don't want to be a pathologist!!

There's a girl that works in my dept. who's a nodder. As in, when we have our monthly inservice, i make sure i'm nowhere in her line of vision, because the one time i DID sit by her, she nodded with every word for the whole hour.

Drove me batty.

Oh no, I think I am a nodder !! I will have to check myself next time I am in class !:chuckle

one of my biggest pet peeves is when the instructor constantly interrupts the class when taking an exam with statements like " there is a typo in question 4 it should be a t in the word instead of a s". This is so aggravating because it throws your concentration off. Obviously we knew the word should have been the instead of she. Then to make matters worse, 3-4 students have to ask her to repeat what she said making the interruptions even longer. This happens 4-5 times during an exam.

Another pet peeve I have is when some students cosy up to the instructor. This drives me absolutely crazy. Can you say brown nose? Thankfully there are not too many students that do this.

Thanks for letting me vent

ya know what drives me nuts?????

Having to pack two meals bc im at school sooooo long!

Also clinical instructors who make you feel bad for asking questions....

Hmmm, I hate more than anything the KNOW IT ALL'S. WE have one girl in my class who just got out of her LPN training and she knows it all, even though she never worked as an LPN. She argues often with our 40 year veteran Ph.D cardio instructor at length and even gets snotty with her from time to time. I want to smack her.

I also get peeved at that I take 100 pages of notes for a test and the test is 50 questions of nothing but scenarios...give a dog a bone for memorizing all that info and have 1 or 2 knowledge based questions on there.

And, of course, I get tired of studying for 3 or 4 days straight and still just get a B. Oh well, I gave up on straight A's back in second semester.

Only one and a half more semesters to go!!!

mine was just last month when i was in a duty at our school's hospital.. imagine having a M.A.N. clinical instructor who doesn't even know the meaning of ANST, CVP, HGT, ADLIBITUM, ADDENDUM and even pricking an IV bag that shouldn't be pricked... arrgghh!!! the thought of her really annoys me--- A LOT! and what makes matters worse is that she puts the blame on the students even if she was the one to blame for it.. like one time she ordered my co-member to assist an old lady to get out of the room coz an xray wud be condcted.. when my co-member left, the head nurse asked our ci if the old lady wud stil get pregnant that she was asked to leave the rum and you know what our ci replied?? "oo nga no, and they even let her stand.."

I think I have just been getting a bad batch of teachers. In my psychology class, the teacher gives us a presentation assignment and says "all you need to do is give an overview of the topic". When presentation time comes around, in the middle of someones presentation the teacher stands up and says "No No I was expecting this and this, not that". First off, if thats what she wants then tell us, second of all DON'T interrupt. She stressed to us over and over the courtsies of being a good listener and here she throws them all out the window. She also interrupted another presentation to tell another student to stop tapping on the desk. In the back of my mind im thinking geez lady practice what you preach, Im just glad she hasnt interrupted one of my presentations yet.

There is also a fellow classmate that insists on talking with everyone around him.

During lecture, during films, during exams!! And he sits behind me. Finally the teacher moved him for being disruptive, and he starts tapping on everything. Desk, floor, books, everything. Then his cell rings and he answers it, in the middle of lecture. And the teacher did absolutely nothing. Ive heard rumor of a teacher that will answer a students ringing cell and talk to the person on the other end. I think im going to find her becasue she doesnt put up with that stuff.

And all this was just last class period.

thanks for letting me rant. it felt good

good luck to everyone

We used to have a couple of "Psychic Instructors". I called them that because they could tell, on the first day, just by looking, who was going to make a "good nurse" and who was not.

They would then ride the "not" ones mercilessly for the entire semester. It was really hard to watch these bullies at work. But if anyone complained, they were (of course!) lumped in with the "bad" group, too.

I sure hope that's changed.

While I was taking my GE courses and prereqs I couldn't stand the kids just out of high school in my classes. (I realize that's a general statement) They would always sit in the back and gossip the entire time, text message and talk on the phone, cheat, talk the ENTIRE lecture, etc. Some days I would actually turn around and tell them to BE QUIET. I've had professors thank me for that.

Now that I'm in nursing school, I can't stand the ones who have been around the medical field and act like they know it all. People who were Army Medics or MA's or CNA's. There is one person in my class who acts like they know everything there is to know about the field of nursing and working in a hospital but when it comes down to it, this person knows so little. This person always has their hand up and the professor actually tells them to put it down. They also talk all the time. After many dirty looks from several people and they continued I finally snapped my fingers to get their attention and then put my finger to my mouth to be quiet. They got the message.

As far as the sniffling goes, that was me last week. I caught the cold that everyone has been passing around in class. I felt SO bad. I had to ask my professor if I could get up to go to my bag to get my tissues, as the ones I had with me became unusable. The girl who was sitting next to me was upset (but in a joking way) and called me "Sniffler" the rest of the day. LOL!

Here's a new one that just came up this past week....I had to go through a CPR class for my certs. I was paired with a girl in my class who is book smart, but very insecure about doing anything in demonstration. So, I was trying to help her with things, and MAN ALMIGHTY! This girl opens her mouth to talk and I am telling you, she could choke a goat with her breath! I have smelled some bad breath before but this was almost like rotted teeth or something. I am thinking she must have some serious dental issues. And I get stuck with her on 2 person CPR, thank god we used masks and bags, but still! I always have altoids because I am a coffee drinker, so I kept offering her mints all day...and of course she refused. I thought it might have been a one day thing for her, but she came up to talk to me yesterday and no, it wasn't. I feel bad for even venting this, but oh it was so hard to talk to her and not grimace or back away. I have been thinking about it and I am going to have to say something to her about it before long. I would not have any trouble saying anything to a pt (I worked psych for many years and most of my pts had ADL issues) but it seems to be so much harder to confront a peer with this kind of stuff. *SIGH* how do I get myself into these things?
