Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?

Published

What is your biggest pet peeve about being in nursing school or things that happened while you were in nursing school???

Don't you hate it when:

you study your *$$ off and still dont get an A!

when you hear nursing students say "ewww thats gross" or "it stinks in here, im gonna throw up" or "ew i cant chage a depends thats so gross" -that drives me nuts! i dont know how these students will make it in the world of nursing....

come on nursing students i know we all have something that really irks us about school (even though we all loooove it!)....

I'm only taking pre-reqs, and we already have a BTDT (Been There, Done That) in my psychology class. Because she works at a mental hospital, this apparently gives her the authority to tell a story for every disorder. She has used the word "crazy" to describe several pts. Needless to say, that word doesn't sit well with the professor lol.

That is the worst been through nursing school twice, LPN then RN and I hated having a lecture and someone always had a story about their aunts sisters cousins friends daughters boyfriend, and I would get so sick of it and roll my eyes and scream on the inside. I HATED IT AND THEM AT THE TIME, I had been a tech and a monitor tech before nursing school had seen alot but I managed to hold back all those stories, why did they and did they not know they were getting on everyones nerves and the instructors especially:bluecry1: :bluecry1: PLEASE MAKE THEM SHUT UP THAT'S WHAT I USE TO SCREAM ON THE INSIDE.

Students who ask stupid questions about tests such as "How many questions?", "How many multiple choice?" What does it matter if you

know the material? Anyhow one day I raised my hand to ask "What

kind of paper will the test be on?" :chuckle

:rotfl:

I wish I had thought of that one. Several people predictably asked these same questions before EVERY test when I was in school. Ugh. So annoying.

Nursing school peeves....don't get me started! :rotfl:

How about the girl who ALWAYS is 10 mins late for class, and then wastes the next 10 mins asking questions that the lecturer has already answered.

The people who are repeating the class (some for the third time!) who don't listen and just sit there and chat...maybe there is a reason they have failed?

Mobile phones.......Turn them off, or put them on silent. Now i will admit to having my phone on me most of the time (single mum, 4 kids). It however is always on silent, and if i am expecting a call about/from the kids if they are sick ect. i will tell the lecturer know beforehand and leave the room quietly if it starts to buzz in my pocket.

The kids just out of high school who sit there and giggle when watching dvds about showering/putting on a condom catheter/anything with naked people ect. Hello, grow up! (no offence to any young students who do not do this)

The know it alls. If I wanted to ask you, I would not of used the lecturers name when asking my question.

OK feel better now.:p

Do love the fact that i am going to be a RN in two more years (3 yr degree) though

Nurses who think students are their to do their "dirty work," not to learn. Not that I am opposed to doing my fair share of the "dirty work" but I want to see something other than azzes needing cleaned and doing vitals all day. Hello, I'm not an extra aide! I need practice at skills!

When our nursing instructor constantly stresses the importance of the "sterile field" in lab practice and need for ppe when a person is in isolation. Yet, when we are at clinical and need her assistance she enters the room WITH NO PPE, NO GLOVES and sticks her bare fingers in a trach site infected with MRSA:eek:   !?!?!?! Also, during a sterile procedure actually said, "oh, sterile shmerile....in the real world it doesn't work like it did in lab practice, let's go and just get this done!"

If our first semester instructor would see that I think she would flip out of her skin!!

And that is why hospital acquired infections rank as the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. There are some caregivers, probably more than we care to admit to, that don’t take the necessary precautions and take ‘shortcuts’ at every opportunity. There really is no excuse for this lazy, uncaring, unprofessional and lax attitude. Don’t be like her if you want to be a professional. She isn’t.

I totally agree with ya!! We discuss this at clinical all the time! We even had a Dr come in on a trach and vent floor to do his rounds, NEVER wore gloves and NEVER washed his hands in between patients! They have total disregard for the very principles that they teach!!

...when all the other clinical groups start at 7 and we have to be there at 6:45 and then when all the other clinical groups get out at 2:30 and we have to stay til four...

Biggest pet peeve: when the instructor is going through the chapter and says, "don't focus on this topic, we will not be testing on it." and then proceeds to have 20 questions on the next test on that information. When the majority of the class failed the test, she had the audacity to ask, "what, do you want to be spoon fed?" No, I don't want to be spoon fed, but I don't want to be lied to either. If you don't know what is on your test, don't give me any head's up. I will be better off just studying the whole chapter, thankyouverymuch!!!

Ok, here is one I don't think was mentioned yet...and before I say this let me say that I have nothing against the NCLEX...BUT...

I'm soooo sick of hearing, "these are the types of questions that are on the NCLEX"...if you miss a question on a test and want to dispute the answer its almost always, well those are the types of questions on the NCLEX...I mean I know the teachers are just looking out for our best interests but it gets old sometimes!!! Ill be soooo glad to just take the darn NCLEX and be done with it!!!!

CARE PLANS. I went to nursing scholl during the pre-computer age and we had massive care plans to write up. I mean 40or50 pages sometimes and they were just so much bull. It was one of the ways that those nurses who couldnt find their rear ends with both hands could get "A"s .Its probalblt one of thereasond I never went back to school. YUCK

omg...my biggest pet peeve is those students that think just because you have worked in the medical field then you should know all the answers and not have any problems...sh** if that was the case why would i be back in school to learn!!!!
