Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?

Published

What is your biggest pet peeve about being in nursing school or things that happened while you were in nursing school???

Don't you hate it when:

you study your *$$ off and still dont get an A!

when you hear nursing students say "ewww thats gross" or "it stinks in here, im gonna throw up" or "ew i cant chage a depends thats so gross" -that drives me nuts! i dont know how these students will make it in the world of nursing....

come on nursing students i know we all have something that really irks us about school (even though we all loooove it!)....

i am out of school years ago, but still fresh in mind of those sick behaviours. Ppl could juz come late to class and 'bang' the door so loud as if announcing their arrival! that make me sick! once prof decieded to lock the door at 8am sharp (well, pitty those late comer but hey, i totally agreed with that). haha... :lol2:

oh, and those late commer were always late for clinical as well. once prof said to a 5 min. late mate : hey, ur patient needs resusitation

to a 10 min late mate : hey, ur patient is drowing his last breath

to someone later then tat : hey, ur pt's body is on the way transporting out.

i think tat's cool!

Its like...Are you a call girl or what?

Ok yes I know...she may have kids. But still. :chuckle

I have kids and my cell is always turned off during class. I hate it when others do not turn thiers off.

Another problem is the conversations people are having right behind me during a lecture it drives me nuts. The professor end up telling them to stop talking at least twice during class. They should be tossed out just once and they would not do it again.

People that got away with things where other people were scrutinized for because they weren't the teacher's pet. I also didn't like it when the cell phones went off during the tests or in class. The talkers didn't bother me too much because the teachers usually got on to them before it got out of hand. Plus it was a good distraction sometimes when the class was boring.

How bout in clinicals?

The nurses that expect that you know everything? The other day one of them asked me to get something from the supply room and then ran off...i know she is busy but I had no idea what she was talking about...it was a name id never heard before..so i had to go down there and search among the millions of supply drawers to figure out what she was talking about...

or, well i know this comes with the territory but i hate it when you walk into a patients room and you just know that it is going to be one of those days!

Had a clinical instructor that drilled me on a brand new med that had come out maybe a week or two before thsi incident.

I had seen that my pt. was prescribe a med (that day) that i had never heard of, nor knew what it was for, so, before i would even give it, i wanted educated about it. Of course, the drug book had nothing, so i was going to go to a website and look it up first. This was 5 minutes before the drug was due, and all of a minute after i got my clinical assignment.

Well before i could do that, the instructor said "let's go, drugs are due". I said "there is a med i need to reference." She said "Oh, there's a drug you don't know. A pt. is prescribed something and you know nothing about it? That's pretty damn dangerous." I said "it could be, but i was in the process of rectifying this before you interupted me. I'm not about to administer something and not know anything about it." and walked off to the computer to look up the med. I printed out the sheet for my own reference, then went to the other instructor when it was time to give it.

The first instructor tried to complain that i was refusing to administer any meds. It didn't wash.

My all time number one pet peeve: GOSSIPING STUDENTS!!

Ah, I feel better. Anyone else have catty/gossipy girls or guys in their class?

Cindy

OK, I know this was posted a long time ago, but I'm a newbie to the board and I'm having sooo much fun reading through this thread :) Makes me feel better knowing that I'm not the only one who feels like this.

I had two girls in a Chem class who wouldn't stop talking...ever. One class they actually sat there and made up a list for a birthday party, and then complained when they both got a bad grade on the next test!!! Duh, ladies, it's no wonder!!!

And yep, I've had a number of those "know-it-all" students in a bunch of my classes. What I really loved is when the students would state something as factual, and the teachers (all of whom had their Master's, some with Ph.D's) would correct them. I always had to giggle inwardly at that.

This is a great thread. I feel like I'm going to get a good heads-up on the RN program!

6. I had a teacher in my class that told every student in there that they were going to fail. Thanks for the encouragement!

Both my Human Phys and Micro teachers said that to us (to those of us that knew we were taking both classes at the same time). HA HA, I passed both...and I figure they might have been saying it to weed out those that couldn't stand the heat (because hey, if you couldn't handle those classes, how in the heck do you think you'll be able to handle being a nurse), but it sure would have saved a lot of stress and crying fits if we had been given a wee bit of encouragement.

My Phys teacher would actually brag that he managed to make a guy cry in his class!

Doctors handwriting. This should actually require a law. How on earth could it be safe for a patient- that a nurse or anyone else for that matter- not be able to read this guys writing. They spend a gajillion years in school and apparently they missed handwriting somewhere along the way.

OMG yes. I actually almost had an anxiety attack every time I had to check the doctors orders. Cant read them for ****. They should all be slapped for writing like that. :rotfl:

I have a small class and it bugs me after we have a test/assign./etc. everyone has to find out what everyone else got...oh did you hear so and so got this...I choose not to participate but I still hear it.

 Loud gum chewing, smacking or (what ever you want to call it ), pen clicking constantly during lectures or tests, people with their naked smelly feet occupying the chairs in the front row so no one can sit down, and heavy coughers and breathers that hack obnoxiously all through class, then "light one up", first thing upon exiting the building.

I can't stand people who go on about how they could/would be a Physician's Assistant or a doctor, but for whatever reason (not enough money, can't juggle a job and school at the same, not enough time, etc) they're "stuck with" or "settling" with nursing. There's nothing wrong with having a plan B, but it's arrogant to think that you're too good for the field and see nursing as underachieving. It's also a way of showing off how smart you think you are.
