Nurses make me sick

Published

I am coming back to this forum, after being away for many years, to communicate this message to you:

Are you kidding me? Why is this profession on "blast" everywhere? Every Instagram post has some covid/nursing/hero quote within it. Nurses are now dancing all over tik tok? Do you think this is cool? Do you think this is what professionalism is about? It is to the point where I am almost ashamed of being a nurse; our traditional nurse leaders are rolling over in their graves. Have humility, stop talking bad / complaining about how awful your jobs are. You came into this profession, probably for the $ and cause every other post on facebook influenced you. This is all part of the agenda: flood hospitals with nurses to drive down wages, make working conditions worse, and pay less. Basic supply/demand strategy used by all corporations to make their workers replaceable). There are plenty of good nurses out there, I am sure. I am just disgusted by the profession's turn: Nurses are shaking all their goods for social media; nurses have no respect for their patients and do nothing but talk chit. I am nothing like most of you, I am ashamed of you, have some respect. Be humble, stop fishing for attention on social media.

That about sums up my feelings as well. Plus I’m convinced that most of my patients are intelligent enough to not hold it against me if they happened to see a completely different nurse post something dumb on social media. Why would they? If I see a member of *insert any profession* do something silly, I’m not going to automatically assume that every member of that profession is the same. I think OP’s warning is rather melodramatic. We’ll be just fine and our professional reputation will be intact.

I wonder what is acceptable for people who mock it.

People wouldn't mock it if it meant something. They mock it because it has been cheapened by those who offer it, not everyone else. The derision is directly related to the fact that it has become some token way to pretend that people aren't being treated poorly.

ETA: Will answer your question too. What I want instead of pizza and/or donuts, is, at the very least, to not be lied to right to my face. If things aren't great, if administrators recognize there is a problem, I'd appreciate some acknowledgment of the truth rather than lies and free pizza. It's pretty simple really, and doesn't cost a dime.

I wish I knew, but it does seem to be a common theme on internet threads with provocative titles. I’m sure you’re here to point out I’ve bought into it, which would be a fair point. ?

No, you can take my question at face value...

Not commenting on OP but addressing the questions about trolls in general. If you want to understand an internet troll you need to stop thinking like you and instead figure out what kind of personality tends to troll the internet. There is some reasearch indicating that Dark Triad/Dark Tetrad personalities are overrepresented when it comes to making troll posts. If you can wrap your head around the fact that there are people who actually take pleasure from other people’s sadness, umbrage, humiliation or pain then understanding trolling becomes easier.

I just call that evil.

I LOVE free food. I don’t consider it to be a slight like some people do. I work on a COVID unit and understand it is what it is. I work on my stomach. LOL

I wonder what is acceptable for people who mock it. I get money and staffing being common and I don’t disagree but at the same time that requires money and resources. ?

I love the pizza.  I’m not the type of girl that’s ever going to turn down free pizza.

Or facebook or Twitter.

Doing GIFs are excitement enough for me.

I really don't give a Flying Fruit Basket what others are doing as long as it's not illegal, immoral, or unethical.

There will always be those who do things in bad taste and I just ignore them and have always attempted to live the life of my dreams.

I do have facebook and Instagram.  No Twitter for me either.  I did try it, but man, those people are vicious!!

I like your GIFs.  I don’t know how to properly GIF.

OP, I originally commiserated with you briefly because I personally find these public displays annoying, but I think it’s a little too far to say they’re killing the profession. Can you really judge a nurse’s whole career by a couple of silly short videos? This is just where I think you turn into a troll that wants to stir the pot. You’re not getting the comments you were hoping for that bash your original post, so you’re doubling down to draw someone in. It’s pretty transparent.

I think most people in general need to get over themselves. The video posted does not appear to have affected patient care in any appreciable way. It's my understanding from my son that a TIK TOK video lasts around 15 tp 60 seconds so we are not talking about nurses wasting any large amount of time.  In April 2020 we were just seeing what this virus could do and the emotional toll on nurses front line or not was so significant that I can hardly fault a group of nurses for trying to inject a bit of humor into their lives. When nurses or any group of workers for that matter are  pushed to the edge with no relief mistakes that can cost lives happen. Is it frivolous and unprofessional perhaps but I would warrant that the balance of those nurses in the video are all very hard working and respectable members of their profession and communities. The area of nursing where I work (PSYCH) is just now seeing it's own COVID surge. We can't lock patients in their rooms, restrain them or even reason with them to stay in their rooms and social distance as they don't have the ability to comply due to their symptoms or illness.
I am no hero or even the best of my profession, just a simble flawed individual who does the best I can to get through each day taking care of myself, my family, my patients and my community. Demonstrating a sense of humor and allowing ourselves to be human is the best manner of self care possible.

I always hate in when holier-than thou nurses put down other nurses by saying "You just went into this for the $s. Like they are doing it without pay due to some higher calling like noviciates in a nunnery. The last time I checked housing, food, medical care and education still cost money. Why souldn't we want a job that pays a living wage with enough left over for a bit of fun now and again?

Off my soap box now!

What's the actual "prize" or reward that this gives to trolls? Why is it a positive reinforcer? I'm really curious.

The fact that he hasn't posted on this site for 6 yrs and his post 6 yrs ago was "MEN, don't come into nursing".

I am not a troll but I am a truth bringer. I get it, you are all a "click" and want to gang up on an outsider by calling me a troll. It's cool though I've been doubted and repressed my entire life, I know how to handle this. I m glad I triggered some of you who are doing nothing now other than arguing with me to help cope with an obvious decline in the profession. It's OK; I am here for you and will listen. Please see the Image I posted; it shares the stages of coping. Regarding the recent trend of unprofessionalism in nursing, I believe many of you are in stage 2, judging by your responses. I myself am in stage 3 and approaching stage 4. I hope in the future, nurses will find ways to enhance their professionalism. These tik tok videos are not professional. I m finding here people are defensive // coping // ignoring // just getting by.

I'd like to end this post with the definition of professionalism.

pro·fes·sion·al·ism

noun

the competence or skill expected of a professional.

"the key to quality and efficiency is professionalism"

the practicing of an activity, especially a sport, by professional rather than amateur players.

"the trend toward professionalism"

Totally agree and that’s a great point. It’s pretty harmless, and definitely not the most important thing nurses are going through right now. I’m just easily annoyed by all things social media, but that’s a me problem!

I completely disagree. This has a huge impact on our public image.

And read the post, it got PLENTY of attention (65k views, this site made $$ off of ads due to that post) because I had a solid point. Just because you don't like it, does not mean it is not worthy.

While I do agree that some of the videos are unprofessional I think you may be overreacting a tad. Like I said before the whole 'look at me' trend is just ridiculous IMO, but it is still not mine, nor anyone else's, place to judge. You may have an opinion on how people are coping but you really can't tell just by a few responses or videos for that matter. I don't know why these people make these videos and neither do you, we can only speculate. That said, I do wish people in general would be more professional, civil, decent, and respectful.

Re the pizza, only a problem when admin is trying to buy you off with it! I like pizza but a flying fruit basket would be nice too.
