Nurses make me sick

I am coming back to this forum, after being away for many years, to communicate this message to you:

Are you kidding me? Why is this profession on "blast" everywhere? Every Instagram post has some covid/nursing/hero quote within it. Nurses are now dancing all over tik tok? Do you think this is cool? Do you think this is what professionalism is about? It is to the point where I am almost ashamed of being a nurse; our traditional nurse leaders are rolling over in their graves. Have humility, stop talking bad / complaining about how awful your jobs are. You came into this profession, probably for the $ and cause every other post on facebook influenced you. This is all part of the agenda: flood hospitals with nurses to drive down wages, make working conditions worse, and pay less. Basic supply/demand strategy used by all corporations to make their workers replaceable). There are plenty of good nurses out there, I am sure. I am just disgusted by the profession's turn: Nurses are shaking all their goods for social media; nurses have no respect for their patients and do nothing but talk chit. I am nothing like most of you, I am ashamed of you, have some respect. Be humble, stop fishing for attention on social media.

The attention-seeking sanctimony makes me cringe, and I'm surprised you didn't mention crying videos. I might hate those more than anything.

I reserve the right to complain, though! ...just not on tik tok.

I was expecting to be attacked, TY for the constructive feedback. I have not seen the crying videos and I probably shouldn't see these. To be honest I do my best to avoid most social media these days because of things like this. The less I know, the better. but WOW! Crying videos now too?? people wake up!!

I'm apart of a couple groups on social media related to stopping violence against healthcare workers which is something I'm passionate about. Beyond that I don't tend to view much "nursing" content on social media due to the cringe factor, hero worship, etc.

I also agree that crying videos are terrible.

Complaining about how terrible our jobs are is not unique to nursing. EVERYONE complains about their jobs, why should we be any different?

I saw a Tik Tok video of a nurse mocking management for offering pizza when conditions were bad and I laughed and laughed because I just got a free meal ticket for working understaffed when there was a no show they pulled a nurse from my unit to cover.

I love seeing the nursing humor on this site, and some on Instagram.  I don't have Tik Tok but enjoy what I have seen.

I do cringe a bit at the "nurses are heroes" and crying videos stuff but it sure was nice seeing our profession held in such high regard.

Yes there are some unprofessional nurses on social media.

It's 2020 and nurses are part of the general population that uses social media, so I pretty much disagree with everything you're saying.  I do totally support your right to have an opinion about it and to express it here on social media.

Crying videos?

Tell the truth: You have one of those shirts that says "Here to save your *** not kiss it ?"

I think you should share your thoughts on TikTok, insta and fakebook where you will more easily hit your target audience.

Or just realize there have probably always been nurses who portray nursing in cringe ways and display it all over everything. T-shirts and coffee mugs and $5 canvas bags and basically anything else able to be printed upon.

Signed,

"Nursing is a work of ♥️"

Hey @JKL33 I bought one or two of those canvas bags! ? I was so proud to finish nursing school and get into my first job that I had a bunch of cutesy stuff. But yes I do agree some of the nursing tik toks or IG posts can be annoying. I’m a millennial but I use social media way less than my peers, I have seen a few of them that just made me cringe. But like mentioned above, most people use social media and it’s a new way to communicate. I’m sure most of the sentiments have been around for a while, it’s just that now there’s a nice touch of narcissism and it reaches further audiences.

I think that society in general has become more narcissistic because of social media and apparently some nurses are not any different, although I agree it is unprofessional for nurses.  I cringe at all the "influencers" (look at me, look at me)! I have used some of those bags and mugs etc but only the ones I received as gifts from management for nurses week etc. I don't go waving them around though, I guess I am just to thrifty (cheap!) to throw them away. Being humble is a worthy goal!

I can't speak for the USA but to be honest here in France, most nurses aren't doing this.

I agree it's inappropriate.

I am not on facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, Crap Rap, Clap Trap or whatever. The closest I get to social media is a discussion forum like this one. I can live without being glued to my phone and I contact my real friends in real life via real life means.

I find it somewhat amusing that you thanked someone for the constructive criticism stating that you expected to be attacked instead. I would also expect that you would be attacked because the very tone of your post is not constructive but condescending, especially when you tell members of your own profession that you are ashamed of them. You painted your fellow nurses with a very broad brush, discounting the fact that the things that you are lambasting people for are not unique to the nursing profession, you are railing against personalities as if they are unique to nurses.

People across all professions seek attention through a variety of media and for a variety of reasons. I've seen teachers posting videos decrying their unfair treatment, police officers, retail workers, etc. What you are annoyed by is human nature, not nurses specifically. Who goes into their profession for something other than money? If people didn't need money they would volunteer. Your statement that nurses have no respect for their patients and do nothing but chit chat shows that you have decided that a small minority of the profession represents the whole. Rather than degrade everyone, maybe you could be the example that you think is needed in the profession. We are all nurses, sorry you're ashamed to be associated with us, because the majority of us are damn good at what we do and we deserve the same respect that we show others every day in our professional lives.

TY DUDERNGUY, for setting about 5 million of us straight here on social media, and for doing it in such a spectacularly kind and thoughtful way. If you'll excuse me, I've got a unit to run.

Just about every post here has helped to restore my faith in the profession. Maybe it is because this is a third party nursing website that tends to attract a "higher quality" nurse? Or perhaps we are just part of the older population, as I am in my 30's, and I can be experiencing a normal generational dissatisfaction with the youth. I know many of you gestured that my initial tone was harsh/rude; it was meant to be that way as I am upset with the unprofessional trend. I LOVE the different aspects of nursing, even though I have struggled like many of you, and I would fight to defend the profession's integrity and value, as I am trying to do with the discussion here.

I feel my message was not geared towards many of you potentially great nurses who post here; I really don't know the extent of the audience that exists on this site, and therefore, I doubt many of you are part of the problem. The nurses causing this disturbance are not posting on allnurse; they are on insta, tik ,snap , etc...

Don't forget to make a tik tok video about it while you dance inappropriately in the med room. Where is HR in all this social media mix? Dropping the ball?
