A recent study led by Vanderbilt University professor Peter Buerhaus polled registered nurses about two timely issues -- the state of health care and the importance of the issue in the upcoming election.
With a close election expected, the country's three million registered nurses could make a difference in the election, Buerhaus says.
Most nurses interviewed support some form of universal health care coverage, although opinions vary on just how extensive coverage should be.
Very few approve of the country's health care system as it stands now, the survey shows.
...Slightly more than half, or 51 percent, believe that if all nurses could join together to address one health problem, it would be the number of uninsured Americans.

Was any one swayed or have a change of voting power after last night's speech, which was written by Matthew Scully speechwriter of George W Bush?
Is she going to be spoonfed by others, writing her speeches and coaching her, how do we know how intelligent and experienced she is on the issues that will cause change to take place? "THE DOW IS DOWN, DUE TO UNEMPLOYMENT!!!!"
Yeh, pretty sad isn't it? I loved how they were all chanting "drill". It doesn't make sense to me and only frightens me more as an American.
I didn't hear one solution for any of the problems we as Americans are having in this country. Pretty sad if you ask me. The republicans are going out scratching, aren't they?
As nurses, we have a responsibility to share with the public what our educated opinions are regarding the upcoming Presidential election. If you want researched answers for questions about the healthcare situation existing now; and how voting for a Democrat or Republican would solve problems we have, here's a resource.
Michael Moore (please don't groan) published a book on July 17, 2008 about Presidential politics, and it's RIGHT ON!!!
I'm a registered dem. I have been since I registered to vote in 1990. I voted for Clinton in '92, I did not vote in '96 (b/c I moved to another state and did not re-register in time) and I did not vote in 2000 b/c neither canidate appealed to me and I didn't want to be responsible for electing either one of them pres. I voted for Kerry in '04. This yr..I'm riding high on the fence. I can not justify voting for Obama based on his healthcare plan alone and during his campaign I have read some remarks made by him/his wife his Pastor and his staff, that made me uneasy. I can't justify voting for McCain because of the abortin issue, McCain does not have a health care plan, and that issue is important to me. Something needs to be done about it. But I also don't like the republicans " we shouldn't help are fellow man " attitude. i don't think we as American's are asking for handouts from the governmet. We just need a little help. If it wasn't for Bush screwing up the economy so bad we proabably wouldn't be in such a bind. When the cost of gas goes up .10 cents a day and the groceries go up everytime the gas goes up. Why aren't are paychecks going up just as much or just as often to compensate for the economy???
OK I went on there a bit more than I intended,
I think this yr (Since I really do want to do my civic duty as a proud amercian) I'm gonna vote Independent...*now where is Ralph Nader at on the ballot*
We'll let me enlighten you about third grade economics. Drill more creates more supply, more supply than demand causes prices to drop. As far as solutions I haven't heard any from Barack except hope and change which last I checked the grocery store takes neither as payment for goods and services. Barack is an inexperienced empty suit offering nothing but platitiudes and nonspecific idealism. Alternative energy will produce no results for 10-30 years or me.

It is not your responsibility to share with the public you political idealolgy. People are very defensive about politics almost as much as religion. If you were to start espousing political beliefs to patients or their care givers it could be a whole lot of trouble you might find yourself in.

Whose tax dollars are going to pay for all this drilling? What if I don't want my taxes paying for it?
Why would tax dollars be used? Oil companies pay for exploration, drilling and refining. They simply need government permission to drill. Then the government assesses taxes on each gallon you purchase at the pump.

The post did not state we share our educated political opinions with patients and their families.
We do, as social advocates have the right to share our educated opinions for the health of our community and our nation.

i'm with you 100%. I am a 3 semester Nursing Student with a Local hospital scholarship, i am also a US Permanent Resident since the year 2000. Unfortunately, i had to quit my job and i don't have any medical coverage right now. Recently, i found a small lump on the upper right quadrant of my left breast and i can afford to do all the exams and treatment (if needed), here. I am requesting one week off from school and going back to the country where i was born (a 3rd world, undeveloped, and of the size of an orange country in South America) to get everything done for free. I had a gynecological exam done (without insurance) and i received 3 bills for the total amount of $750.00 that i'm still paying.
Don't get me wrong i love this country and iam very proud to be here. I am just sad that the money i've saved up to do my American citizenship paper work is now going to be paying for the plane ticket to go get some medical help.
I hope that in the future, people like myself, your patient, and many many others can walk into hospitals doors without the fear of being denied care, or being banckrupt after receiving it.
