Nurses and the 2008 election

Published

A recent study led by Vanderbilt University professor Peter Buerhaus polled registered nurses about two timely issues -- the state of health care and the importance of the issue in the upcoming election.

With a close election expected, the country's three million registered nurses could make a difference in the election, Buerhaus says.

Most nurses interviewed support some form of universal health care coverage, although opinions vary on just how extensive coverage should be.

Very few approve of the country's health care system as it stands now, the survey shows.

...Slightly more than half, or 51 percent, believe that if all nurses could join together to address one health problem, it would be the number of uninsured Americans.

Self reliant. That's a pipe dream. Everyone has had some form of help from the government at sometime.

Besides, I have no problem helping Charlie the crackhead get medical care.

Elderly, disabled and children are no more special than crackheads.

Besides, everyone paying as they can afford IS socialized medicine. The wealthy still will pay the lion's share.

So are you for or against. You kinda chose both there. ;)

I do like how you broke down each comment and responded accordingly. It's so great for some one that loves order like myself.

Self-Reliant I am, I am 41 and had never had my hand out.....never, I work 40-60 hrs a week so I can fix my roof, put proper food on the table for my kids and not owe anyone a credit card bill. Your talking to a momma that loves the simple life . If I was in need I would nearly kill myself to find a way to provide, that's the way I was raised and the way I raise my kids.

Charlie the crackhead is weighing down the system and made the choice to abuse his body. If Charlie was sick, poor and tryed to provide but couldn't make ends meet...then I am all for him and helping him.....if you abuse yourself and the system then I have no respect.

If the wealthy can pay a certain amt, so be it. But if you have a job and need to contribute $20 a mo for yourself and that's all you can do...then that's what you do. But we all need to take personal responsability. Afterall that is the adult thing to do.

Who am I for? I was never for the dem's.....I feel they enable too much and are too soft on protecting us overseas. I say this with much research in back of my statements. I am not saying the republicans are angels...I feel they are all no good. Palin to me is pretty cool b/c she ousted many in her on party which takes guts. I admire guts!

:)

SO on election day I am writing in my vote... Co.Klink....my dog.

Whataya think?

I am way older than many on this site. I had to rely on help when I was disabled by a broken back. I wish it did not happen, but the help kept my children from being freezing cold in winter.

I know Palin from more than the current national press. Oh yes, she took on some in her party. Her claim was a transparency of government. She sold the jet. We all liked that. Now she lies about the bridge. The bridge was not about getting from the airport in Ketchikan to the mainland. It was in preparation for growth in AK. Look at the AK regional site. Many people want to go to AK. Where will we put them? Most land is owned by the fed. gov.

She has already been found to be unethical and smeared a good man who tried hard to protect her from herself. She has not been a good gov. Certainly her history is not positive, just not well known. What do you know about her manipulation of the gas line contracts?

Back to health care. I don't see that either candidate will be able to change this quickly, if at all. It will require a great deal of work as the issue is such a tangled mess. It involves the insurance companies that are in the tank right now. It includes those who have inadequate insurance and as a result cannot pay mortgages and their hospital, doctors bills. Medicare is such a nightmare that many doctors will not even see elders. Pre-existing conditions must be addressed.

No leader will be able to fix all these problems and put out a comprehensive heath care program without the economy improving. Right now it feels like our heath care system is in multi-system failure. All of us know how hard that is to turn around.

I am thinking with my head

And I truly do not see Colin Powell as a much of an influence this late in the game. I see it as him angling for a position. But that is all.

Colin Powell was one of the highest and most respected Generals of this time period. Here's a sample of his skills (wgich could be applied to nursing leadership):: :yeah:

Colin Powell's principles of leadership described in the book include the following:

  1. Being responsible sometimes means ******* people off.
  2. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.
  3. Don't be buffaloed by experts and elites. Experts often possess more data than judgment. Elites can become so inbred that they produce hemophiliacs who bleed to death as soon as they are nicked by the real world.
  4. Don't be afraid to challenge the pros, even in their own backyard.
  5. Never neglect details. When everyone's mind is dulled or distracted the leader must be doubly vigilant.
  6. You don't know what you can get away with until you try.
  7. Keep looking below surface appearances. Don't shrink from doing so (just) because you might not like what you find.
  8. Organization doesn't really accomplish anything. Plans don't accomplish anything, either. Theories of management don't much matter. Endeavors succeed or fall because of the people involved. Only by attracting the best people will you accomplish great deeds.
  9. Organization charts and fancy titles count for next to nothing.
  10. Never let your ego get so close to your position that when your position goes, your ego goes with it.
  11. Fit no stereotypes. Don't chase the latest management fads. The situation dictates which approach best accomplishes the team's mission.
  12. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.
  13. Powell's Rules for Picking People: Look for intelligence and judgment, and most critically, a capacity to anticipate, to see around corners. Also look for loyalty, integrity, a high energy drive, a balanced ego, and the drive to get things done.
  14. Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand.
  15. Part I: Use the formula P=40 to 70, in which P stands for the probability of success and the numbers indicate the percentage of information acquired. Part II: "Once the information is in the 40 to 70 range, go with your gut.
  16. The commander in the field is always right and the rear echelon is wrong, unless proved otherwise.
  17. Have fun in your command. Don't always run at a breakneck pace. Take leave when you've earned it: Spend time with your families. Corollary: surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard.
  18. Command is lonely.

I do not give Colin that much respect or power personally.

Once you realize what a great man he is, you may realize how little you knew when you wrote that. Coming to conclusions without researching the subject is irresponsible!

Personally, I don't think the "O" is the second coming and I see long gasoline lines and long health care lines in the future if he can help it. I feel he is the media's messiah but if you truly speak to your neighbors....you know, the one's that like to take home their own pay check and not share with Charlie on the corner smoking a crack pipe, they'll say they much rather be......self-reliant...... So not all health care workers are licking their chops to be imerged in a socialized medicine society. But....we absolutely need to make insurance less of a monopoly, be able to buy accross state lines and have people pay for insurance according to what they can pay for it by using income guidelines. All children, elderly and disabled insured but if you can walk and talk then go to work and pay your fair share.

I feel so much better now.:p

You already pay for "Charlie's healthcare, except it's much more expensive since his illness wasn't ameliorated by early prevention /detection and programs that work. Socialized medicine is what is done in Russia, not in Canada, France, etc. Getting rid of fraudulent insurance schemes and raising peoples' awareness of the responsibility all of us have for one another - think avoiding epidemics.

This is a story that shows Sarah's work on health care while gov. While this is an opinion piece, you need to recognize that ADN has supported Palin heavily over the past two years.

She now claims to have spec. needs children as a focus but in her tenure as gov. has never made childrens health issues a priority. As we know that many special needs children will also have many more health care needs than the general population, I have my doubts.

Alaska has a huge FAS population and this goes back in many cases 2-3 generations. Again these children will have increased health care needs.

Her lack of sensitivity to health care needs of poor people in Alaska is not a plus in my book.

You notice that when I wrote that. I used the word personally. So to suggest that I am irresponsible because I disagree with you. Interesting. You may feel he is great, History may show he is great. Personally I do not give him that much credibility. That is my take on it.

I see where on the news they came out with how Anchorage, Alaska is endorsing Obama, I wonder how McCain and Princess Palin feel about that.

i am wondering how many others saw cbs sunday morning on 10/26. there were 2 segments on healthcare: one about where the candidates stand and one on how the healthcare system in france works. it was very interesting and enlightening. people in the us spend a lot of time bad-mouthing the french but they sure do a heck of a lot better job making sure that every one of their citizens has all the health care they need. and for less money than we spend!!! the way they handle emergency care is very innovative.

You are right Effie, the outlay is actually lower than our, and if you think the we are not paying for everyone's healthcare now with higher costs being passed onto the insured... you are crazy.
