Nurses have an Attitude Problem

Published

Nurses have an attitude problem. They are catty, cliquey, think they know-it-all, don't care at all what you think (what they say is always right and final), dislike outsiders, newcomers and change, and most of all, rude. I cannot get along with any of them, which is different from other professions. Before you say "then why don't you choose a different career if you don't like it" in typical nursing rudeness/we are the best, the attitude is not appealing.

Hey Sunrise-

I don't usually play matchmaker, but maybe you should PM Mathboy,

On a more serious note:

Are you sure you want to head into a profession surrounded by people you don't like?

Is it possible that you feel this way because you feel stuck with nursing, despite not even being in nursing school?

Of all the professions in the world, nursing may not be the best choice for somebody who doesn't like nurses.

Thanks for your troglodytic sexism.

In find myself using " mouth-breathing troglodyte" more and more these days.

Right now I am thinking I agree with you... I am actually getting ready to post my own rant... while not every single nurse is like that, there seem to be enough of them, at least from what I have seen, that it is easy to come to that conclusion.... It's a shame, because I'm pretty sure most people didn't go into nursing to become bitter, clicky, rude... the list can go on... but it seems many (again, obviously not all) become that way. It kind of reminds me of the teachers I have dealt with (as a student & parent) that just need to find another career, they didn't go into teaching to be bitter, intolerant, and have no patience, but I guess they get burned out... Oh well, it is what it is.

Hahah! Yes! What is with all these lay people coming on here & blasting nurses? I smell lots of trolls.

I think that can apply to pretty much any profession. In 8.5 years of working in medical billing, I saw this nearly on a daily basis with some of my coworkers (not all). Some people are just like that.

As far as nurses go, I've met my fair share of some not so nice ones and some really amazing ones. I've met more nice nurses than I have met "mean" nurses. When I meet those nurses that I haven't found very pleasant, I try to see things from their point of view as there is probably more to the story (or perhaps it's more my perception than it is them). I think there are only a small handful that are unpleasant by nature, not the stress of the job (or by your or my perception). Maybe I'm naive, but the nurses that I run into that aren't very nice, I take it as a learning experience and let influence me in regards to the type of nurse I want to be, but I also accept that I may have bad days too.

Wow. It's pretty brash of you to make such a sweeping generalization about a profession you are not even part of.

And I'm sorry, but being a "pre-nursing" student means exactly nothing in your ability to comment upon how nurses should or should not be.

I have had experience with MANY nurses during long term stays in the hospital for over a year. Most of them are fantastic and truly caring and compassionate. There are days that they may feel overwhelmed (short staffed, new patient, discharges, charting, etc), and may not be as "friendly", but this happens in all professions. I'm 34 and have held several positions outside of nursing. Of course, I came across a few that aren't as compassionate and are desensitized as well. But, to generalize an entire nursing population is wrong. In school, I've come across students who truly want to become a great nurse, save lives, and chose the profession because they want to help people and do good, then there are a couple who are constantly trying to take shortcuts (cheating) and say they want to be a nurse because of the money. One of my classmates told me she was choosing this career because of the salary, I said it's not always about the money, and she said "of course it is, money talks". These are some of the nurses that I feel may become rude and not very happy when they become nurses.

Right now I am thinking I agree with you... I am actually getting ready to post my own rant... while not every single nurse is like that, there seem to be enough of them, at least from what I have seen, that it is easy to come to that conclusion.... I don't think I am bitter and rude, but I am pretty clicky. I think that's my age.

Anyway, slept in today, still have time for a 2 hour mountain bike ride with my wife and a buddy who is also a nurse.

Then, in for a 10 hour stint in the ER with a bunch of nurses who are not bitter, or rude. I'll undoubtedly be handing off pts to the floor or unit, dealing with nurses who are, for the most part, not bitter or rude. Some might be a bit cranky, but I generally see them as a challenge to get them to loosen up a bit.

I am friendly with people, and start most interactions with something personal- like, "how are you?". If they sound stressed, I usually try to sympathize. I know giving another pt to an overloaded floor nurse is stressful, and that she isn't frustrated with me. "Hey, heard you guys are getting slammed up there.."

Maybe my approach to dealing with coworkers has something to with my perception of them.

I have worked in a bunch of places, and have gotten on with the overwhelming majority of other nurses.

As I said before, this is a lousy profession if you don't like nurses.
