  1. I was accepted to the accelerated second degree program in March and will be starting classes in 2 weeks. I never received an acceptance e-mail, I was told over the phone that I was accepted and got the official letter in mail 2 weeks later.
  2. Anyone here know anything about the coop city campus? The fall and spring sessions for the accelerated students will be held there instead. Parking? Are the labs there well equipped and updated? It seems like they are making several changes to the program, summer cohort will have 50 students rather than the normal 30-35 in the past, different campus, hesi, and several new professors. Seems like the new dean is expanding the program and implementing program changes to increase NCLEX rates.
  3. I took it as 2 different classes. They have combination classes with. CPR and First Aid but it doesn't seem to be the one we need, which is BLS for "Healthcare Providers".
  4. Yes, will be attending orientation June 9. I was told it's mandatory, and we would be receiving info on how to log in to their systems, get our syllabi's, and some pre-homework/readings to do. I will be working on the long checklist of things to do we received via e-mail until then...(first aid, cpr, health forms, physical, ppd, background check, uniforms, equipment purchase, etc....) :)
  5. Congrats FranMyr! Yes, I have completed all pre-reqs so it will just be the nursing classes. My schedule is as follows: Mon: 8am-11:15 and 12:15-3:15 (Health Assessment - theory portion) Tues: 8am-11:30 and 12-4:00 (Foundations - theory portion) Wed: 8:30-12:15 (Dosage Calc) and 12:45-4:30 (Health Assessment - LAB) Thurs & Fri: 8:00am-4:00 (Foundations - LAB and clinicals) Pretty much 8-4 Mon to Fri, factor in all the study time we have to put in outside of classes, I don't think it's possible to work during the summer session. It's definitely more doable during the fall and spring.
  6. I truly wasn't trying to imply the whole "higher calling" mentality. I just feel that to be a nurse, there should be a level of empathy, compassion, being able to communicate with others, and honesty. For the couple of people I have come across in which I don't think will be a great nurse, were the ones who mostly play hookie from class, cheat on exams, or take the easy way out, and their intent on nursing was solely for money and job security. If they are cheating on exams to get into nursing, I would be afraid of what shortcuts they try to take when a life is in their hands.
  7. I have had experience with MANY nurses during long term stays in the hospital for over a year. Most of them are fantastic and truly caring and compassionate. There are days that they may feel overwhelmed (short staffed, new patient, discharges, charting, etc), and may not be as "friendly", but this happens in all professions. I'm 34 and have held several positions outside of nursing. Of course, I came across a few that aren't as compassionate and are desensitized as well. But, to generalize an entire nursing population is wrong. In school, I've come across students who truly want to become a great nurse, save lives, and chose the profession because they want to help people and do good, then there are a couple who are constantly trying to take shortcuts (cheating) and say they want to be a nurse because of the money. One of my classmates told me she was choosing this career because of the salary, I said it's not always about the money, and she said "of course it is, money talks". These are some of the nurses that I feel may become rude and not very happy when they become nurses.
  8. Btwn 8-8:30am to 3:30-4:00pm with a small break in between everyday
  9. Anyone here starting this summer? I officially registered for summer classes today, finally feels like its "really" happening. :)
  10. I'm currently taking Microbiology as well and lucky to have an amazing professor who really narrows down the information we need to know and gives us notes to study from for his exams. Although there is quite a bit of info, anyone who study's from his notes and listen to his lectures will do well. However, there are a hand full of complainers in my class who are all borderline passing that complains the class and exams are hard. They are also the ones who don't bother to study or thinks that reading the notes the night before the exam is sufficient studying...drives me crazy hearing them complain. Our professor is so sweet and lenient, they are just taking advantage of him.
  11. I'm scheduled to register next Wednesday so will let you know. But from what I can see when I logged in to look at course listings, the 6 week summer schedule is pretty much 8am - 4pm Monday to Friday. If that's the case, factoring in commute time and studying, I don't think working is possible. The following summer covers 12 credits, so working is out of the question then as well. When I went to the open house, they discouraged accelerated program students from working, but I think during the fall and spring semesters, a lot of students were able to work part time. I think the IT track has a bit more flexibility when it comes to working. I'm going to just focus on school for the 1st 2 semesters and see how it goes, then I will most likely look for a per diem job or volunteer.
  12. I actually just made this decision last week after hours and hours of research. I went to best buy set on getting the surface pro 3 since it was on sale for $1149.99 (the 8gb 256 i5 model) and I signed up for the student discount which was another $100 off, which made it $1049.99. However, when I got there and started playing with it, I felt that it was definitely more tablet than laptop. Although it was super light and neat, I don't think I will enjoy typing 10 page papers and care plans on the detachable keyboard and 12" display. My top choice was the newest MacBook Pro with retina 13" display, however, I wanted the 8gb 256gb model, and it came out to $1375 on sale, a bit more than I wanted to spend. I ended up purchasing the newest dell xps 13 9343 model with QPS touchscreen (i5 8gb 256gb SSD storage) on sale for $1110, the same specs was showing at $1399.99 on dell.com, I got it from the Microsoft online store which is 1299.99 - 10 % student discount - 5% for sending text MSSTORE. I've been using the laptop for a couple days now and love it. its 2.8 lbs, and have an infinity edge 13.3 screen, and a full normal keyboard. I got the touchscreen version and love it, glad I chose this laptop.
  13. I think the skills check may cover things like checking blood pressure, respiration rate, etc. Things that will be covered in health assessment lab.
  14. Congrats Kpass! Summer classes will start 6/29 for 6 weeks. I think classes will be Mon-Thurs 8:30am - 5:30pm, this is based off of what students in the earlier accelerated program cohorts of CNR has posted, and I believe there is a skills check on Fridays (not sure about this). I will be commuting from nassau county, LI.
