Some interactions are just plain odd. What's one that will stay with you forever?

Mines is I had a 34 y/o female pt. She would always put her light on to tell us that she had just used her diaper. She had been there about a week using diapers. She has also been DEMANDING us to put in a foley. So early on in my first day with her as I'm changing her I ask her how she uses the bathroom at home. "I just walk" She was in for a lap chole. So I ask her if she can use the restroom right now and she just jumps right out of bed and goes to use the restroom. Turns out she just really really really didnt want to get out of bed. After that she was still very insistent on getting a foley.

oh, another one..

The family that called me lazy at least a dozen times. The family was appealing a discharge order to a rehab facility (something I didnt even know you could do) because they felt the pt wasnt strong enough. O.o

So even though she could walk, she was unsteady and needed assistance. Pt and family refused her walking to the bathroom, and would only use the bedpan. I tried to make it a goal for her to walk to the bathroom at least 2 times, but that was me being lazy again. (Even though it takes far more time on my part to walk her to the bathroom vs put her on the bedpan.) Some people are just ....yeah...

My oddest experience was a paraplegic patient I was taking care of asked me if my husband and I liked to "swing." I asked the patient ; "You are talking about like the swing, in a park, right?" Nope. The patient meant the other kind of "swing." Nope nope nope. 😳

I think you mean masochist. Unless, of course, you are thinking of the effect on the nurse who has to place the foley. It is sometimes an unpleasant task...

It's a rarity that I have normal interactions to be honest. The worst is when they try to drag me into family drama. But its always fun for me to stop them right in their tracks when they do. Maybe it's not odd (even thought I have those) but is alarming how often it happens.

Most recent case was a BF of a patient who didn't want the patient's daughters husband to be in the room because of recent DV issues against the daughter (He was already in room with the situation being calm and the vented patient was not acting distressed upon seeing him like the BF said she would). He started making threats and such and I was like dude unless you have a restraining order or have POA (like the daughter) then it's not my problem. I also added if you start making threats in a hospital we are going to have problems real fast.

I swear I feel like I am on a Jerry Springer show most days.

I had a patient who was terminal. She was scheduled to go to a nursing home. She said "I'm not going". Well the ambulance showed up to transport her and she died that very moment. I guess she REALLY did not want to go.

I was trying to place a Foley in a "turtled" old man, and he grabbed my hand, looked lovingly into my face and said "You remind me of my granddaughter!"

The oddest moment of my life happened when I was positioning a patient in bed. Her feet were elevated on a pillow.

Patient "what are my feet supposed to do"

Me "nothing, just lay there, are you comfortable"

Patient - "I don't know"

Me- "you look fine"

Patient "I don't know what to do with my feet"

Me "okay then"

I have to leave because I was starting to laugh... It was bizarre.

I was rounding on patients in the middle of night shift checking on a patient who was supposed to be asleep when she opened her eyes and asked me to feel the lump on the back of her head. Puzzled because this was not related to her current diagnosis I did palpate her head...she did have a fairly large occipital prominence. She looked at me and said "Jesus Christ lives in there." :unsure:
