Some interactions are just plain odd. What's one that will stay with you forever?
Mines is I had a 34 y/o female pt. She would always put her light on to tell us that she had just used her diaper. She had been there about a week using diapers. She has also been DEMANDING us to put in a foley. So early on in my first day with her as I'm changing her I ask her how she uses the bathroom at home. "I just walk" She was in for a lap chole. So I ask her if she can use the restroom right now and she just jumps right out of bed and goes to use the restroom. Turns out she just really really really didnt want to get out of bed. After that she was still very insistent on getting a foley.
Another memorable patient comes to mind. I was precepting a young man, new nurse who had a....shall we say....effeminate manner? I took him with me to my patient rooms, as he was matched with me for the shift's assignments. I introduced myself, indicated to my orientee that he should do the same. He did....and when done with his ten-second intro, the female patient in the bed said "Oh, I just LOVE the gays!!" ROFL.....I'm not sure who was more shocked....ME, or HIM!
By the way, although I had my guesses, I'm not entirely sure he WAS gay. But that patient, LOL...she LOVED him!
The son who used to close the door to wash his mom because no one else washed her well enough. We opened the door to...TOS prohibit me from going any further. Or maybe my retching does.
She was semi comatose. He was arrested.
OMG something similar happened here except replace son with grandson.
most of my patients that wear diapers will ask me to put a diaper on. when I say incontinence pad, they think im talking about the chucks, and not every one knows what a depends is. so I just call it what it is.
This. And I'm wondering what healthcare professional uses the term "diaper" when speaking about adults?

That is the most disgusting this ever. How sick are people?!? God Bless America.
She actually complained about it....unit manager not amused, told her that since her ARMS were not affected by the surgery, she should have no trouble with her personal hygiene....and *I* had the pleasure of following up with her to let her know that it was our job to keep her functioning at the maximum level of ability she had. Which, in this case, included wiping her OWN butt!
Seriously, can you imagine REQUESTING that kind of personal care when it isn't at all necessary??
This happens a lot where I work. It's like, seriously, you want someone else to do that for you???!?!

I hear it both ways. I just say 'brief' instead of diaper. If a pt says, "Oh, well it's still just a diaper." I say, "For adults we say 'briefs.'" Not like it really really matters. They usually aren't too thrilled about wearing one in the first place.
