Nudity?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi!

Alright, so I heard from someone that while she was in nursing school she had to strip down, do physical exams and then be naked for the rest of the class! I'm not a nursing student yet, but this scared me. I'm not comfortable with my body and plus there are guys in these classes. I don't know whether to believe it or not. Can anyone tell me if you had to do this? I'm really freaked out.

Thanks!

Really???? Even if you were joking (which I'm just going to assume you were).....really?

yeah, it's not creepy at all for a 39 year-old man to post that he wants to spend time in a lab with mostly female nude college age students.....not creepy at all:uhoh3:

You are not alone in finding the naked girl jokes highly unfunny. That Guy;4343267 had a similarly themed comment earlier in the thread. And no it isn't because I'm bitter about not being 25 anymore.

Both in LPN and RN school we kept our clothes on.

Saw that and wasn't thrilled about it, but at least it wasn't as blatantly creepy. He's at least not old enough to be some of the students' father.

Well tlp514 if you find out that nursing students do have to strip naked please let me know what school you go to. I may need to go back to nursing school. I of course would maintain strict professional conduct in a lab full of mostly female nude nursing students.

Well I read this and laughed. I didn't find it offensive and took it in the matter I am assuming you intended it.

As far as the Original Topic, We never had to strip down. I wouldn't have if we did. The closest thing we had to do behind curtains with one person and the instructor, was lay on our side and pull down pants enough to do the landmark for the IM injection. The professors warned us to make sure people had underwear on that day, the hip part of the underwear would be exposed on that one side.

That nearly had me in a panic attack itself.

I don't need to know what a patient experiences, I have been a patient more times than I can count, I have been a patient in the Naval hospital where they seem to forgot all about privacy. Have had my insides and outs on display for the whole staff. So I am fully aware of what it feels like to be a patient. I would have never been ok with a classmate doing a breast exam on me. Or me being there naked up top for 15 mins.

Anyway, none of this stuff has happened in my program.

There's an interesting point. Just curious - are the folks who are uncomfortable in underwear in a professional setting equally uncomfortable at the pool or beach? And this isn't pointed - I'm honestly curious if the attire makes a difference. (It sort of does for me, and personally I can't understand why. My two-piece bathing suits actually show more than the underwear I wore during this portion of lab.)

Yes I am, at least I am now over the past few years, I didn't used to be. I am very insecure about my body. That is what happens when you had an upbringing like I did. (at least in my case) I have always been really modest. But at least at a water park, I won't be seeing these people again, my classmates I will. I view it differently, thankfully it's not an issue at my school and it's not something we have to do.

LOL .... what some people don't wear their undies? Your profs had to warn people? Ohhh, that's just freaky :clown: I've always been curious about the IM injection landmark site. Never had any shots anywhere near hip area. I haven't seen anyone get a shot there either. That area just looks painful to stick anything in it.

Hate to tell you, but at Duke we did head to toe assessments on each other, to include breast exams. Our assessment class was at the grad level so we did exactly what the grad students did. Just your lab partner, the instructor, and you. Fifteen minutes (or less) of embarrassment. No big deal. We sucked it up and moved on.

Interesting! I start at Duke in August. Not that I really care about briefly letting the girls loose for medical inspection - parts are parts, I don't really mind if my classmates see some skin. (And heck, it's an accelerated program. The longest I'm going to have to deal with any of them is 16 months, right? ;))

Speaking of pelvics... I work as a standardized patient for the med school here and am actually kinda jealous of the girls who teach pelvics (using themselves as the models!) to the med/PA/etc students. Not only is the pay great, but they really do a huge service to medical students needing to learn that vital exam in a lower-stress, more learning-positive environment than on a real, potentially distressed patient! I'd do it, but post-hysterectomy, and later losing an ovary, I'd be more of a fill-in-the-blanks test than a real learning opportunity... :D

I think it's important for nursing schools to be sensitive to the concerns of all their prospective students. One's body image is uniquely personal, and can be highly associated with stressful and even traumatic events and/or illnesses in the student's past.

If someone does not have an easy breezy no big deal attitude about this issue, it doesn't mean they need to be "fixed". They should be able to bow out with no loss of dignity or repercussions from fellow students or the faculty. :twocents:

I also found PMFB-RN's comment funny... not offensive at all (as I'm sure it wasn't intended to be). Anyway, I don't think the use of classmates for exams, etc. is bad at all. But I do think it should be entirely voluntary, depending on what kind of procedure it is. Definitely with breast exams and stuff like that. I think quite a few people would volunteer. I would and I'm pretty self-conscious myself. But I don't think anyone should be forced into it. But that's just my 2 cents.

At this point in my life..yes. I've gained some weight and the body looks a bit different at 47. ;) I never had walked around letting too much hang out, so I would say I'm a bit modest. It is one thing to show it all for professionals that are working in the field. A whole other to show it to students that may or may not make it through school. I would have probably been more comfortable in my RN school to show more. But many of my fellow LPN students were not professional at all and didn't even graduate.

We always seemed to have a few volunteers if needed. I agree with whomever mentioned only using volunteers.
