Nudity?

Nursing Students General Students

Hi!

Alright, so I heard from someone that while she was in nursing school she had to strip down, do physical exams and then be naked for the rest of the class! I'm not a nursing student yet, but this scared me. I'm not comfortable with my body and plus there are guys in these classes. I don't know whether to believe it or not. Can anyone tell me if you had to do this? I'm really freaked out.

Thanks!

During classes like Health Assessment, I was asked a few times to remove my shirt to go over where to listen for lung sounds, heart tones, etc. Being a guy, I had no problem with this, but it definitely wasn't pressed on me. If they had 'required' me to do it, and I didn't want to, I would've contacted the NLN or some other governing body. No one has the right, instructor, administrater, whatever, to require you to remove your clothing. It's not right, and you certainly don't have to do it. So don't let this scare you out of nursing school. And maybe look at different programs that don't have that reputation.

Best of luck to you!

...I don't really think you can compare it to being examined in a clinical setting either. I see my doctor once a year, and she has been taking care of me since I was 12 years old. I see my classmates every day and they are my peers.

I dunno, I just don't think it's a good idea...it seems like it would just be too easy for someone to take it too far. I would like to think my classmates and instructors are all professionals but thats not always the case. Can't you just see some pervy instructor taking it as far as they could go?:barf02:

I kind of agree with this. We are supposed to be professionals and take it as a learning experience. But the bottom line is, there are some creepy people out there, and you just never know. And all the school would need is that one student to come along, who decides to complain of being touched inappropriately or claim they felt violated.

I actually used to work with this one male RN. A few times he asked me to do unnecessary exams on his female patients, claiming he didn't want to violate them. I was young and inexperienced, but it didn't take me long to figure out what he was doing, and that he was probably getting aroused by all this. (I figured it out when he ended up in jail, BTW.) So nothing surprises me.

Don't get me wrong, if someone is comfortable with being practiced on, and they volunteer for it, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. But I don't think it should be forced upon or even expected of students. Besides the reason I mentioned above, some people just really don't feel comfortable stripping down in front of others, no matter how closely they have to work with one another. And that should be respected.

In my current RN program, it was only suggested that we wear tank tops and shorts to practice in the lab, if we wanted to. Had they made it mandatory, I probably still would have done it. I don't mind going a little out of my comfort zone. But if it was anything more, like sports bra or breast exams, I would not have consented.

I understand that there are people who feel very strongly that practicing skills on each other represents more than simply going through the motions of a skill to become proficient at it.

They feel very strongly that the nurse must "feel what it's like to be a patient". He or she must get over their neurotic body image issues, and they must bond with classmates.

I think there is a level of denial about these other issues, and if people want to talk about the bonding and the other psychological issues in that regard, then we should have a thread about that.

Really???? Even if you were joking (which I'm just going to assume you were).....really?

yeah, it's not creepy at all for a 39 year-old man to post that he wants to spend time in a lab with mostly female nude college age students.....not creepy at all:uhoh3:

Is it creepy if we enjoy spending lab time with mostly female fully clad college age students?

I've definitely caught some of my female classmates ogling a shirtless male classmate in lab and I managed not to throw a fit.

I have never heard of that... ever ever... We used mannequins and pretended on each other, then examined our patients in clinicals.

 ..... No.....This isn't something that is part of nursing school. The 'worst thing' my class was expected to do was give each other a modified bed bath. We wore shorts & kept our shirts on.:dncgbby:

The objective was to "start @ the top & work your way down"...learning which areas you'd use a separate washcloth for , etc....and the most important, patient dignity...keeping them covered, protecting their privacy throughout the procedure, yadda_yadda_yadda.

We heard all types of horror stories..everything from practicing venipuncture to inserting Foley's into each other. none of which ever happened.

We learned how both skills 'practicing' with anatomically correct mannequins.

Again,

Whats wrong with that?

We did sports bras and shorts but also covered up with a hospital gown. Our lab was co-ed, so we partnered up with whoever we were comfortable with. But after the first week everyone seemed to relax and it really didn't matter who saw your sports bra :)

In no way, shape or form is that ok!

I can't believe such as silly comment about stripping naked in front of classmates merits so many responses. Are you guys serious? To even entertain the banter is so demeaning to the profession. And I'm not even a nurse yet!!!

Man, I went to the wrong school!!!!!!!! Actually, the female who was my partner- we ended up getting engaged to each other eventually........we decided to do some extra credit!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah: That's actually a true story.:smokin:

You animals!! Lol.... that's cute. At least, you guys didn't have to go far to find your mates. Cute story!

How, exactly, are the majority of these responses "demeaning" to the nursing profession? Someone posed a question and we answered. As you can see from the responses, some people did, indeed, have to strip down to some degree. There were those who were comfortable with it, while others were not. We discussed it. What’s the big deal?

Whether the OP was being sincere or not, it‘s irrelevant. Some people actually got something out of this discussion. Who are you to tell us what post is or isn’t acceptable to respond to?
