Nudity?

Nursing Students General Students

Hi!

Alright, so I heard from someone that while she was in nursing school she had to strip down, do physical exams and then be naked for the rest of the class! I'm not a nursing student yet, but this scared me. I'm not comfortable with my body and plus there are guys in these classes. I don't know whether to believe it or not. Can anyone tell me if you had to do this? I'm really freaked out.

Thanks!

LOL .... what some people don't wear their undies? Your profs had to warn people? Ohhh, that's just freaky :clown: I've always been curious about the IM injection landmark site. Never had any shots anywhere near hip area. I haven't seen anyone get a shot there either. That area just looks painful to stick anything in it.

I don't really find it freaky at all. Some people don't like to wear underwear for whatever reasons, or they might that day have worn underwear that maybe they didn't want anyone to see. So the instructors warned what we would be doing, that it would be 2 students who found the landmarks on each other and one instructor in the privacy of the curtains and unless you didn't care, make sure you have on underwear and whatever kind you had on you didn't mind if someone saw. Wasn't a big deal. I agree that area seems painful but apparently they have found it's the best place to give an injection via IM with the best results, I dunno. I haven't given an IM injection yet (outside a baby on their leg) and doing that spot still scares me.

Like the underwear my mother bought me...decorated in lightbulbs, with "Turn Me On" on the crotch?

Hehe.

I don't what's more freaky, the underwear you describe or the fact your mother bought them! :p

Totally kidding, which I am sure you know but just in case others don't I figured I would add the disclaimer ;)

Well, my mom always buys me a bunch of underwear from Victoria's Secret for Christmas. She usually goes for stripes, or hearts, something she finds "cute" rather than "slutty" or "sexy." The panties are gray with small lightbulbs that from a distance could appear to be pears. And she had NO IDEA what the crotch part read until I told her.

That is too funny!

o/t a little.

i bought my sister some vs underwear for x-mas last year. i saw a cute pair that had little hot air balloons all over them in really nice colors she would like, so i picked them up without really looking at them closely.

while i was wrapping them, i saw a lovely message written on the butt of the underwear, it read "enjoy the ride".

We never had to do that. When we learned basic care (Bathing, bed changes with patient in bed, physical exam), we practiced on each other, but wore either shorts and a top or else a swimsuit and shorts and often were also covered by a hospital gown, to better simulate a hospital care environment. We didn't do anything to each other's breast or genital regions-that was either done on models or, in the case of lady partsl exams during labour, were only done on patients by senior students who had chosen to do an OB specialty.

Nowadays there are fairly accurate anatomical models for every part of the human body. We used rubber models of the vulva and member to learn peri-care and catheterization and the instructors borrowed rubber breasts to help us learn breast exams, both for cancer checks and for checking lactation in nursing mothers.

Apparently in the very old days, the students did lady partsl exams on each other, but I don't know if that's the truth or just an urban legend. In today's nursing schools, anything too intimate is done on models.

When I taught nursing skills lab not so long ago we still had the students wear shorts and tank top or sports bra for the bed bath- that was the only skill we practiced that required disrobing. Everything is done on manikins pretty much, but the lessons learned through practice on each other are very important. You NEVER forget how it feels to be bathed and how vulnerable patients must feel.

Here at the school I work at now the health occupations students practice on each other for most things- feeding, hair care, baths, transferring. Mostly they are completely clothed, practicing over clothes.

If it bothers you this much check out the nursing skills labs before you enroll and find out how things are done. Rest assured the nudity thing is not current practice in nursing schools.

Looks like a prank is being played.

One of the EMT-I instructors with whom I worked told her class that if any student was late for class the following Saturday morning, that student would be the "patient" for the Rectal Intubation (no gag reflex unless the tube was really inserted too far) skills station. Everybody got a laugh from this, and showed up on time. One student, however, actually believed it and showed up very early that Saturday morning, arriving before the building was unlocked, and waited to get in.

The instructor (the late Gail W.) was very serious about EMS and those who became EMT's and Paramedics, but occasionally displayed her mischievous sense of humor. :jester:

The student later became a RN.

Man, I went to the wrong school!!!!!!!! Actually, the female who was my partner- we ended up getting engaged to each other eventually........we decided to do some extra credit!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah: That's actually a true story.:smokin:

OP I think your friend is mistaking "nursing school" for the plot of "naughty nurses gone wild 3"...or he/she is exaggerating just a lil bit!

Although after reading the replies I gotta say, I honestly find it wierd that a program would have you wear a bathing suit or shorts and a tank-top for a skills check off, let alone give each other a breast exam...I do understand the concept behind it, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. I have major body issues-I freak out if my cat comes into the room while I'm nekkid :lol2:

I don't really think you can compare it to being examined in a clinical setting either. I see my doctor once a year, and she has been taking care of me since I was 12 years old. I see my classmates every day and they are my peers.

I dunno, I just don't think it's a good idea...it seems like it would just be too easy for someone to take it too far. I would like to think my classmates and instructors are all professionals but thats not always the case. Can't you just see some pervy instructor taking it as far as they could go?:barf02:
