Nudity?

Nursing Students General Students

Hi!

Alright, so I heard from someone that while she was in nursing school she had to strip down, do physical exams and then be naked for the rest of the class! I'm not a nursing student yet, but this scared me. I'm not comfortable with my body and plus there are guys in these classes. I don't know whether to believe it or not. Can anyone tell me if you had to do this? I'm really freaked out.

Thanks!

Wow, talk about a thread that gets your attention! But seriously, that is illegal and I'd (as well as, oh I don't know, the health dept., BON, and local police) would LOVE to know what school requires student nudity.

Here I was thinking that some professional discretion (heck, not even professional discretion, how about adult discretion) was needed before posting.

Just because YOUR program has an average of 30 doesn't mean that everybody's does.

I said I was assuming you were kidding, I was letting you know that even kidding it was in incredibly bad taste. Sorry, didn't mean to be too obscure for you, I hope this was direct enough.

As to critical thinking, someone was told something they doubted...so they're verifying. Seems to me they're using some good critical thinking skills.

This thread already has people on it who are concerned about how much they will have to reveal, posting a comment in such obvious bad taste is not helpful or amusing.

Yeah the avg age of mine is 21. You honestly see more when you go to the pool with everyone than you do in lab.

This is true.

To the OP, relax, you will not be nude, or hardly even nearly nude in your class ever. The story got changed by the time you heard, as rumors often do.

:)

Same here.

I got three bed baths from other students for skills testing. I had to wear a gown (my underwear could stay on underneath). I had to unhook my bra so they could wash my back though.

Two of the students were females and one was a male.

Kind of awkward...

Shorts and sports bra under gowns here. The guys assessed the guys and the women assessed the women. There were no issues that I'm aware of, and everyone acted with respect.

I doubt our breast exams on each other were illegal - and I feel fairly certain if anyone had serious objections they would have been accommodated accordingly. Since not too long ago grad students at my alma mater did pelvics on each other, I'm thinking the cops wouldn't care less - they have real crimes to worry about.

And I'm sure the BON was well aware. And since there were no health violations I doubt the Health Department cared either.

There's an interesting point. Just curious - are the folks who are uncomfortable in underwear in a professional setting equally uncomfortable at the pool or beach? And this isn't pointed - I'm honestly curious if the attire makes a difference. (It sort of does for me, and personally I can't understand why. My two-piece bathing suits actually show more than the underwear I wore during this portion of lab.)

What's a singlet? I googled it and all the links were about wrestling uniforms.....and I'm guessing you weren't required to wear a wrestling uniform

Oh and we wore loose clothing with a sport's bra on for our assessment lab. Everyone's privacy was protected and we had no problems.

I think - I THINK - that the "singlets" might be the half-gowns made of paper - the ones that look like a jacket that the docs give you for gyn exams - my NP gives me one of them and then I have a drape on the bottom half.

Yes to your beach question. I wear long sleeves and long pants the whole summer except for the beach where I wear shorts and a tee shirt, but never take it off. I honestly will have to keep from tearing up if a have to have a classmate do some of the more unclothed assesments discussed here. Its one thing for a Dr. whom I don't know or see once a year to see me partially nude, and its another to have a classmate whom I have to see everyday (regardless of how professional they were) do it. I wish it were as easy for me as.....I'll get over it after the first couple of times.....for some people it runs deeper and honestly I would feel humiliated to be exposed like that. Everyone has a vunerable place whether it be discussing certain things that have happened in their lives or being undressed in front of others (partially, I know) Anyway...I am still excited to start Nursing School in August!!!!

Thanks!! I have to keep my eye on the prize. My desire to be a nurse is far greater than the temporary uncomfortableness I may have to deal with. Sometimes you have to face your fears in order to succeed.
