Nudity?

Hi!

Alright, so I heard from someone that while she was in nursing school she had to strip down, do physical exams and then be naked for the rest of the class! I'm not a nursing student yet, but this scared me. I'm not comfortable with my body and plus there are guys in these classes. I don't know whether to believe it or not. Can anyone tell me if you had to do this? I'm really freaked out.

Sports bras and sports shorts at our school during lab, and all students are in one big lab room. If you have a problem with taking shirts off in front of others I am sure your teachers will work with you. We are a mixed-gender group and I can assure you that by the end of the first class, nobody cared what the next student was (or was not) wearing. In my opinion it is a good exercise for professionalism, and it does give you an understanding of how a patient might feel during an assessment.

We were asked to wear singlets a couple of times to practise assessment. I am very uncomfortable letting other people touch or see too much of me so I opted out (as did many others). Bottom line is never do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

What's a singlet? I googled it and all the links were about wrestling uniforms.....and I'm guessing you weren't required to wear a wrestling uniform :rolleyes:

Oh and we wore loose clothing with a sport's bra on for our assessment lab. Everyone's privacy was protected and we had no problems.

I said earlier that I would be very uncomfortable with wearing a sports bra and short shorts or even shorts. Even with my classmates acting in a professional manner (which they do), I would not be okay. We are required to assess under clothing and I am okay with people lifting shirts and such--I just need a shirt for when they aren't assessing heart/lungs/GI.

Nope, no nudity at my school. Professors required their students to lift a part of their clothing for assessments (looking for pulses and such). But, not complete nudity or have to wear a gown requirement (haven't heard anything about that).

Honestly, I didn't really like doing assessments on any of my partners or having anyone assess me. I'd rather do assessments on my patients, mannequins and family members that I can track down.

Apparently, some women forget to shave sometimes lol (I don't know the reasoning for that). If I know that I'm going to have people that close to me, I'm obviously going to make sure that I don't appear "hairy" lol.

I can understand not feeling comfortable. We were allowed to wear tank tops over our sport bras and move them out of the way to do assessments if we felt uncomfortable without them (behind the curtains and under covers for the returns). I should have went into more detail in my first post. We wear sports bras instead of regular bras (with wiring that makes it difficult to listen to heart/lung sounds around) under the tank tops. People opted to wear longer loose shorts but pajama short length was ideal for our assessments. Most of the shorts I wear are Bermuda shorts outside of school so when I say short shorts I don't mean "booty shorts" but ones that come about midthigh. We don't walk around our practice area looking like the Dallas cowboy cheerleaders :p. Good luck in your studies and sorry for the confusion.

Wow we just did assessments on dummies..lol and I dont mean fellow students. Most of my practice has been with actual patients in the clinical setting. We never got naked in class or did anything on each other except blood sticks when we were learning to use a cholesterol screener.

Well tlp514 if you find out that nursing students do have to strip naked please let me know what school you go to. I may need to go back to nursing school. I of course would maintain strict professional conduct in a lab full of mostly female nude nursing students.

Really???? Even if you were joking (which I'm just going to assume you were).....really?

yeah, it's not creepy at all for a 39 year-old man to post that he wants to spend time in a lab with mostly female nude college age students.....not creepy at all:uhoh3:

We all need to engage in a little critical thinking when we hear such things.

Here I was thinking that some professional discretion (heck, not even professional discretion, how about adult discretion) was needed before posting.

Just because YOUR program has an average of 30 doesn't mean that everybody's does.

I said I was assuming you were kidding, I was letting you know that even kidding it was in incredibly bad taste. Sorry, didn't mean to be too obscure for you, I hope this was direct enough.

As to critical thinking, someone was told something they doubted...so they're verifying. Seems to me they're using some good critical thinking skills.

This thread already has people on it who are concerned about how much they will have to reveal, posting a comment in such obvious bad taste is not helpful or amusing.

Haha. I realized that's what it sounded like I was talking about. I'd be right there with you. I don't need everyone seeing my stretch marks (I had gained 45 pounds before my catheter ablation - lost it all in less than three months post ablation so it left some wonderful stretch marks) or the "spider veins" I can thank my genetics for. :lol2:
