a couple days ago i posted a thread about my instructor who talks way too much during lecture, well since then its gotten worst ! :angryfire
its to the point where she is using two classes to go over information for one class. she can't even go over a 25 page powerpoint in 3 hours ( which is one class), instead she uses two class days a total of 6 hours to go over one freakin powerpoint ! yesterday, she was suppose to finish up the lecture from last class which took the entire class time so she didn't even have enough time to go over the new material that we will be tested on monday. all can she can say is sorry, things happen.... the only thing thats happening is that she runs her mouth way too much.
so she told us to read the powerpoint and ask her if we have any questions later.
we pay all this money to go to nursing school and she's not even giving us our monies worth ! :angryfire
i've never been so furious in my life. next time i see her i must tell her how cheated i feel for her not to go over pertinent information d/t her running her big fat mouth !
well vent is over, thanks for reading.
I had a professor for psy that had a habit of telling a lot of stories. And some students took advantage of that and would ask stupid questions just so she would get off track. (not sure what they were thinking because even if we hadn't went over it it was still on the test!)After the 1st test, i realized what kind of instructor she was. I got to know what i should read for the test. I recommend reading everything, cause you never know. It's better to be overprepared than underprepared.
I understand your frustration, but i doubt that anything you would say to your instructor will change her, and could actually backfire and get you put on her s*** list.
As for the instructor that was gonna talk to your instructor- for all you know they could be best friends! And even if they aren't, when the substitute tells your teacher that there had been complaints from your class, i'm sure your instructor is gonna try to figure out who is criticizing her teaching style behind her back! And even if the instructor really did want to help, now she will probably view you as a complainer, or a gossip.
Never speak ill of anyone where you could be overheard!! Anyone could have heard you and i'm sure a class suck up would love to score points with your instructor by snitching that you think she has a big mouth!
I'm not trying to criticize- i'm speaking from expirience and trying to keep you from making the misstep that i made!
Good luck in your class and in school:nuke:
Thanks for your advice. At my cc the Most of the instructors are professionals so I don't see the other instructor causing any problems or drama. Before I can even get the words out of my mouth she told me that people from my class is not the first class to complain. So thanks
Since this apparently isn't new behavior for her, I'm sure other people have probably complained or tried to re-direct and gotten nowhere as well. Your best bet aside from going above her head is to try your best to re-direct her and bring the book to class, study, get homework done, and make the best of your time there. Maybe grab a voice recorder and then take it home, fast-forward through the talking and see if there's anything pertinent too. Use your clinical instructors if you've got questions related to course work too. I'm not saying that what she's doing is right, but I've had instructors like that too and the reasons I did so well in the class regardless of her lack of teaching and the difficulty of the exams were as follows:
I wish you the very best with this class. Make sure you fill out a course evaluation at the end of the semester; she will she get feedback that she may or may not listen to and it might possibly get further up the chain of command. I know at my school, they look at course evaluations from students when it comes to instructors getting raises, tenure, etc.
what ever ! i'm so sorry i chose to vent here. i'm an a and b student i and i know what is expected of me in nursing school. these are not excuses, it is the truth. anyway, its taken care of already. i'm going to continue my study habits. atleast i know now that not every instructor is going to lecture instead some instructors choose to get off topic rambling and have poor time managment. sorry for my ignorance guys and expecting for instructors to give me guidance and tools to prepare me for the nclex and nursing. so please since you all seem to think i'm lazy or coming up with excuses, please tell me what an instructors job is, i would looooove to know.
i'm with you. i know what you are saying and it sounds like you have some great ideas on how to get through this class. just do your best, it's all you can do :)
So we had our first exam last night and another student has to shush her because she kept running her mouth even DURING our exam ! After the exam we had our review, and instructors are basically supposed to just read off the right answers like 1 a, 2 c, 3 d, and so on. We are not to discuss each question. Anyway the other instructor had to remind her to not ramble on and just simply give us the Correct answer and thats it ! Well thanks for all the advice everyone !
I'm sorry your so frustrated with your class. Most of us have had experiences similar to yours. It happens and most of the time you just have to get through it. If another instructor is present and keeping her on track, it sounds like the other instructor holds some kind of higher position which sounds like it will be good for you. Hopefully, you will get what your looking for out of this class. I'm not sure if your sincere in thanking us for all the advice, but I wish you the best.
I am an instructor and would prefer to know if one of my students had an issue with lecture. If enough students were to say this, I would certainly consider making changes. Not all instructors are so egocentric that they will not listen to student opinion. I welcome it. Doesn't mean it will always change (every year on evaluations, at least one student requests that they wish they didn't have to do ANY clinical paperwork, lol) but I will always listen.
Personally, I prefer to receive criticism in the same manner I deliver it.....mention something positive, then voice your complaint, and offer a solution.
For example "Mrs. Smith, I've always found you to be very nice/helpful during office hours/approachable/whatever, and I was hoping you could help me. I know you try really hard to make lecture engaging, but when we get off topic, I feel that I don't have the opportunity to ask questions/view the powerpoint/clarify things. Would it be possible for us to first cover the powerpoint, then if time remains, we could discuss patient scenarios/personal stories?"
We all do some things poorly and some things brilliantly, and it's always nice to point out something positive when you point out something you would like changed.
I would have to say that most instructors I work with would rather hear a student criticism directly and politely, than read an evaluation when it's too late to change something. Almost everyone has an annoying trait that they aren't aware of; how can anyone hope to improve without constructive criticism? Also, if she is a newer instructor, she may need to improve her skills as an instructor. Just because you know how to be a nurse, doesn't mean you are a great instructor. It takes time to develop this skill, just like any other skill.
If this is ineffective, I would suggest you place your comments on your course and instructor evaluations.
Live,
I really wish I had more instructors like you at my school. We had an issues where 90% of the class approached the teacher to tell her that her method of instruction was not beneficial to us. Basically we were forced to teach pharmacology to ourselves amid constant protest from the students. Nothing was changed. Nothing still has changed. Its very frustrating, but nice to know there are instructors out there looking to help their students by changing the way they teach.
