Nothin' like pulling out your pt's old crusty bellybutton crud!

Ugh,

Today I was cleaning my pt and I was wondering why her bellybutton looked black. It kept bugging me.

Well....I had to dig and actually PULL on it to get it out (it was that stuck to the inside of her bellybutton ick!) and out came a HUGE ball of dried up skin cell stuff and covered with some gross black crusty stuff. It was this big chunk of hard dried icky material. The washcloth helped get it out. The patient didn't mind either.

I don't think the pt had the inside of her bellybutton cleaned in about 6 months, thats the best I can describe it! It was so bad that I was gagging

LOL I guess I had a bad shift!

However, the pt looked alot better afterwards!

Edit * whoops hit enter as I was typing the title...its supposed to read "pt's old" haha sorry!*

I worked with a surgeon in OR who had a sense of humour and even gave these collections of hardened belly button matter a name. Umbiliths! (Lith = Stone)

I hate belly buttons...makes me quite squeamish! I once had a Nun who's belly-button was black and hard.I filled it with olive oil and eventually got it out.It was shaped like a big black rotten tooth,ewwww.anyway,someone later told me that some nuns believe it is bad luck to clean this out!!!

OK, I'm done vomiting.

WHY is it bad luck? :saint:

Yup, in the OR we see digusting belly buttons all of the time...... We have to clean them when we are doing laparoscopic procedures... If we were working on their foot, I wouldn't even know it was dirty.... They would leave out with what they came in with... LOL:nurse::heartbeat:nurse:

Now why is it you never see things like this on Grey's Anatomy? :D

i had a young hospice pt who was a quad.

he went into a hypertensive crisis, and the first thing we do is r/o any/all innocuous stimuli.

i checked for kinks/obstxn in his foley:

and knowing this population is prone to constipation, i automatically started to disimpact him.

not only did i retrieve the 'usual' but also noted a small packet with white powder, that had a small tear in it.

cocaine had been being absorbed through the mucosa of his colon.:stone

can't get into too much detail since cops had been involved in this case,

but evidentally his gf had stashed it there.

sorry, can't say much more, but you get my drift.

so just know people, that coke stashed in your butt, can cause a hypertensive crisis.:stone

Is Hypertensive Crisis the only thing to worry about or can it cause others? If it's absorbed into the GI, I believe it can cause MI & Stroke. Not an expert on this one, I've just seen what happens when people ingest it in normal ways (snort it, shoot it up, etc). Crazy because people assume it can't possible do any damage in you butt! Wow!:uhoh3:
