Not today!!

so despite doing this for 15 million years, i've never given Epi -until today.

Kid came in all itchy throated then got progressively more and more moonfaced all the while arguing with me that he DIDN"T need or want Epi until i finally got through to him that he can die if I don't do this. He wasn't happy about the needle but said that the itching in his throat stopped and he was starting to look less and less like Hitch.

I see in his future a trip to the allergist. Now, if only I could see the powerball numbers so clearly.

Great job!!! That was lucky to have you there for him.

Great job with assessment and intervention!

Absolutely! The kid went straight to the er - but that does not replace the need for the visit to the allergist after all the smoke clears.

Perfect.

Wow!! I'm brand new to school nursing and just waiting for the day I may have to be brave and cool-headed like you! Reading about your experience will certainly help me when the time comes! Thanks for sharing!

Nicely done!! I am always amazed at how fast people feel better after the Epi-pen.

Way to go! Was it HIS Epi-pen you gave or do you have stock epi to administer to undiagnosed allergies?

Thanks everyone! Nobody else here really seems to grasp the gravity of what happened here yesterday. I'm hoping at the very least the parent and the student realize how serious this allergy is. The student has a known allergy to a different food, but no epipen, so I had to use a stock. I gave then paperwork and urged them to follow up with the doctor previously, but there was none. This was a different food, but same sort of family i suppose. Known allergy to raw apples and this was a different raw tree fruit.

Wow. Yes...the idea that "S/he can just avoid apples" so no Epi-pen is needed....that happens a lot. So glad you had Epi. Just out of curiosity, how soon did EMS arrive and did they give anything else? I realize that each EMS has their own protocol.

I was worried (and still get worried!) about how I will/would react in true emergencies. Turns out, that's when I am at my calmest. Kid comes in with an extra bend to his arm (broken ulna and radius) and I didn't bat an eye. Student with severe allergies needing epi? I was the calmest I've ever been, explained to her that she needs the shot and didn't give her a chance to argue. Your nursing training will kick in and you'll know that you are the only medical professional there so you need to apply that knowledge and take care of those kids!

YAY!!!

Great job nurse Flare!
