North Lake/El Centro - Fall '06!

Published

Congrats to all of us that were accepted to the nursing program at either campus for Fall '06!!!!

:balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons:

I'm going to be at the NLC campus! See you in June for orientation!

Also, congrats for making it to the next semester to all new 2nd - 4th semester NLC/ECC student nurses & congrats to the graduates! :balloons:

Good luck to everyone!

We have a girl in our class right now who didn't go drop after this last test and she is going to challenge it. She is planning on making a 90 something on the 4th test and the final and see what they say when she has a final 78 PASSING average. It's going to be aaaawesome if she does it! What are they going to say?! That she can't move on?! I'm so proud of her for taking a stand! I just hope she can do it. She has a 60, 68, and 78 right now so I think she told me she needed a 96 and a 94 or something like that. I will definitely keep y'all updated on it.....

About the 78% passing rate- I personally think they raise the bar so high so not so many people will be taking the NCLEX so they can keep their 98% passing rate or something like that because there are hardly any students left to take it! :lol2:

Good for her! I sure hope she pulls out that 96! Make sure you tell her we are pulling for her.... What will they do? I hope she has a lawyer because I bet money they will try to block her from taking the final.

I am all for working hard and certainly understand there has to be a cutoff, but if you can pull out a 78% average after a dissapointing less than 70 grade, you must not be a slacker and realize the need to step up your game!

I agree with whomever posted it earlier, I EARNED the right to not pass.

Although her grades are not good at all, if she studies enough to pass the final, obviously, she has learned enough to pass that section on the NCLEX.

(At least that's what they are trying to say if you can't pass a section.) :uhoh3:

I hope she does make it. Then when she graduates & already has her seat scheduled to sit for the boards, when she gets her diploma, she can flip them all off and tell them to go to.................................................. :trout:

:)

Thanks...I will.

OK.....rumor has it that Brookaven's program isn't a #@&*(#& like El Centro's program. Rumor has it that 29 out of the origininal 30 graduated, and with a 100% pass rate. Rumor has it again....their instructors aren't hell-bent to fail you as it seems some of El Centro's intructors are.

I know from their website, they have won an award already.

...AND....this person already knows the clinical assignment for next semester.....before finals!!!!!!

Having attended both EC and NL, I think they are excellent schools. MY training was tops. When I graduated I said I would NEVER go back, but I know I would in a heartbeat.

Still, I have to say the biggest obstacle is the hostile attitude of some of the staff. I understand they deal with angry students, but GOOD GRIEF! Every office you go to you have to be extra nice if you want to get anywhere. I am a strong person, but they even brought me nearly to tears once or twice!

Is Sue McClellan(sp?) still in charge over a Brookhaven?

I'm not sure.

you know what is so weird , that even the clinical instructors don't know yet where they will be teaching this coming semester. We had the sweetest instructor this first semester and her specialty is OB and Pedi and they put her in first and fourth semester. We asked her , and she still don't know what she will be teaching sec. semester. When she talked about it , she seemed very frustrated herself. She is also a pediatric nurse practitioner and cannot at all understand why they did not let her teach that this semester, and yet they put instructors in there , that never taught that. Goes to show we students are not alone being frustrated.

Right.... It seems this program needs to be revamped from the very core.

.....A good swift kick in the butt should do the trick. :lol2:

Is this the same butt they are blowing smoke up, or is this a different, unrelated butt??? ;)

Yes yes loving the NP thing!!!

I just want to interject this in the butt smoke discussion...

After attending one school for my AS, one for my BS and one for my MS I can honestly tell you that they ALL have some form of butt smoke policy. I have known nurses over the past 20 years who literally have attended every school in Texas and the surrounding states and they too all complained about such policies. Things like this go on becuase nobody challenges them.

The purpose of a community college ulitmately is to contribute to the local skilled workforce. That is how and why they are funded. The policies should support that. If they are not then obviously some revisions are needed. The individual you are talking about who is on the policy fence needs to take her concerns not to the dean, but to the chancellor, In writing. As for the rest of you who are passing - I would probably keep my head down and stay off the radar. Stinks I know - but those profs have the power to find or not find that extra point or two when it's crunch time.

and PS - I know folks who went to Brookhaven - it was hell in it's own special way :)

"butt smoke policy" :rotfl: :roll :lol2:

GAUGE! Glad you are enjoying the new NP job....

Did I tell you, I recently had an interim job as "Program Director of Surgical Careers/ Surgical Technology" at a local college.

It was only for a few months but I LOVED teaching. The students were fantastic. I hated all the administrative paperwork/politics. Since it was a chair position it was full of that.

Anyhoo I helped me realize that nurse education is a good choice for my future!

I hope your new gig is as much fun

Yes, I realize all schools have their own "Butt Smoke" policy. :D

.....AND......I realize that I am passing, so it doesn't really concern me.

I also see would-be-good-nurses have to quit because of stupid policies.

I just think it is sad.....Sad that they are making people quit just so they can compete.

I agree - it would seem to me that they may be cutting competent people out of the workforce to meet a seperate agenda. The powers that be at the chancellor, board and community level might not ultimately be in agreement with this.

Here's my reply to an e-mail about someone seriously thinking about quitting because of the unnecessary 'butt smoke'.

Maybe it will help someone else in the same boat. :icon_hug:

I can't say much about your specific situation, but even if you don't finish out this program to the end, I will not recommend quitting until seeing how other semesters are for you.

Next semester, you may find that you absolutely love OB or peds, or maybe even in 3rd semester that you love psych, etc.

Each instructor has something to offer. It may be a characteristic that you definitely DON'T want have portrayed in your nursing art, or it may be characteristics that you find are wonderful.

With each day, each instructor, and each test, we are molding our future. This is a marathon, and it has an finish line. There are hurdles that at times fall, but we keep going.

Look deep inside yourself and think about why you wanted to become a nurse in the first place, and make your mind up on whether or not you will let someone take that dream from you.

Whatever your decision, I wish you, and everyone, the best of luck, prayers, and friendship.
