Ok folks - it is that time again .... there are many new names and faces (well avatars anyway) on our web site ... time to get to know the North Carolina people.
Lets give a location - why you are there, your current nursing status and anything else you might want to share ....
I am Patrick, the moderator for the North Carolina Forum ... live in Asheville - moved here a year ago from Florida and love the mountains and the moderate climate .... can tell you that Hurricane Frances breezed through town last week and gave us a lot of headaches! Anyway, I am a nurse manager for a med-surg unit and a single father of 3. I attend the University of Phoenix and am hoping to graduate with my BSN-MSN in the very near future.
hello everybody! i am an rn with my bsn from east tennessee state university...class of 12/05.
i live in asheville, nc and work at the one hospital in town.
as i was looking through this thread i saw a thread that i had posted a long time ago...under a different name: gobabego! i have no idea when i did that but obviously i was in nursing school at the time. maybe i studied that memory out of my head?
i've seen a lot of people asking details about pay and "the job" so here is my info. i hope it helps. i started out making around $19.33/hr plus shift diff. and have gotten several raises over the year. i am now making $20.65/hr plus shift diff. i work nights - 7pm to 7am on a general medical surgical floor. the pace is fast and the work is physically exhausting. we are chronically understaffed. cost of living is very high. i have lived in asheville since i was about 4 and now that i am out on my own i am seeing just how high the cost of living is! i would suggest moving to a city with more than one hospital for all of you who are researching nc. competition is a great thing for the pay scale/benefits.
big shot out to you folks in murphy! i was born in andrews and my dad's side of the family still lives in murphy.
feel free to msg. me.
tootles!
Hi all,
I am a nurse from Durham/Raleigh area (very familar with the creedmoor, butner, stem, oxford, henderson area). This is my first time posting here in this particular forum. I am excited to meet all you guys. Yes, the pay here in NC is not good at all, however, there are ways of making money you have to utilize your resources as well as network with other nurses in the community to find the best paying jobs. I also worked at Duke two years ago only started out at $19.00/hr as a new grad clinical staff nurse I (not a good salary in my opinion) for 7 months only and resigned. Shift diffs are offered and you make more working on the weekends. I am glad I made a wise decision to resign. Since, I am really enjoying my nursing career currently as a speciality nurse in acute/progressive critical care PRN (lots of good experience) making $30/hr base w/shift diff during the week-$4/weekend-$7+. I bascially work when I want to, shifts are always avl for PRN so don't worry one will definitely put the voice mail on at times (lots of overtime so don't worry). I know you say but PRN no benefits? correct. I work on the weekend only 2 days 12hour shifts at a nurisng home in Durham and receive full-benefits making $28/hr. I am so happy with the choices I have made I dont know what to do. I have plenty of time to travel and spend quality time with my family (balanced life). Guys don't stay anywhere where you are not happy. No matter where you work you set the energy in you life either negative or positive.
Work smart not hard,

Hi to all members here, im a Registered Nurse in my home country and currently working , but im plannining to work in NC., anybody here that could help me pls? i have lots of questions that i need an answer. Im not sure what are the requirements to become an RN there, i just take a look on the site of NCBON and i find out there that to be able to qualify by exam which is the NCLEX-RN,and to be able to become eligible to apply for the NCLEX RN through NCBON i must do one of the following, > complete the certification program (CP) through the commission on graduates of foreign nursing schools (CGFNS) or > complete a credential evaluation service (CES) through CGFNS and pass on english-proficiency exam (toefel, toeic, or ielts)anybody here can tell me something regarding this what i need, the CP or the CES???? and which is easier one between the two. do i really need to take CGFNS exam first, it is requirement in NC?
specially to foreign nurses here who studied or aquire their nursing education outside the US can you pls. tell me the process that you took to be able to work as an RN in NC.
to all members, moderators.. answers, advice are very welcome and much appreciated.. thank you so much

Grayce,
You really need to contact the board of nursing and talk with a representative to seek correct clarification www.ncbon.com There should be a contact number of the website some where.
Hope this helps,
Praise, RN
Hi Jen & other graduates,
I recommend not cramming too much 2 weeks before your exam date. Take two weeks to just enjoy your life as this will increase your awareness of the knowledge that you already have. Limit your conversation with friends and fellow alumni at least 1 week prior to the exam, as this will help decrease your anxiety level and maintain positive energy around you. On the day of the exam eat a light breakfast, not too heavy. Stay positive, relax, relate, release and take the exam. Don't be distracted by what other people are doing when taking the exam, and/or if they finish before you. Stay focus. I took my exam in Charlotte, NC. Spend the night in the hotel the night before and loved it. That next morning I took the exam and received the entire number of exam questions...and passed.
All the best!

Ca. is a great place to be. After doing contract work there, it was easy to see whey people fall in love with the scenery, climate and the many other offerings Ca. has. It does have the areas of traffic jams and creeping on the interstates, but there are the areas of laid back, and not so densley populated land that is in abundance. Enjoy yourself at work and play.
