North Carolina Roll Call

Published

Ok folks - it is that time again .... there are many new names and faces (well avatars anyway) on our web site ... time to get to know the North Carolina people.

Lets give a location - why you are there, your current nursing status and anything else you might want to share ....

I am Patrick, the moderator for the North Carolina Forum ... live in Asheville - moved here a year ago from Florida and love the mountains and the moderate climate .... can tell you that Hurricane Frances breezed through town last week and gave us a lot of headaches! Anyway, I am a nurse manager for a med-surg unit and a single father of 3. I attend the University of Phoenix and am hoping to graduate with my BSN-MSN in the very near future. :coollook:

Hi! I also just finished the NA1 class last night. We also are the in the first group that must take the state test somewhere other than where we attended class. We have heard scary stories of the skills testing and the very small reasons students are failing. Examples, not making eye contact! Good luck!

I took the test last summer and I think it was better than knowing your instructor. The person that administered my test was very nice and we all passed.

NC has been administering Promissor tests for CNA certification for about a year so don't be nervous your class is not the first.

Hi to all members here, im a Registered Nurse in my home country and currently working , but im plannining to work in NC., anybody here that could help me pls? i have lots of questions that i need an answer. Im not sure what are the requirements to become an RN there, i just take a look on the site of NCBON and i find out there that to be able to qualify by exam which is the NCLEX-RN,and to be able to become eligible to apply for the NCLEX RN through NCBON i must do one of the following, > complete the certification program (CP) through the commission on graduates of foreign nursing schools (CGFNS) or > complete a credential evaluation service (CES) through CGFNS and pass on english-proficiency exam (toefel, toeic, or ielts)

anybody here can tell me something regarding this what i need, the CP or the CES???? and which is easier one between the two. do i really need to take CGFNS exam first, it is requirement in NC?

specially to foreign nurses here who studied or aquire their nursing education outside the US can you pls. tell me the process that you took to be able to work as an RN in NC.

to all members, moderators.. answers, advice are very welcome and much appreciated.. thank you so much

How did you manage to get an NCLEX date so soon???? I'm dying to schedule my test and haven't been able to b/c my school verification hasn't yet been approved by the BON!

Hi TNUp2Jen:

I just received my ATT from NCBON/Pearson on Tuesday, so I turned around and scheduled my test the same day on the internet with Pearson. I have been checking the NCBON 2 and 3 times a day (since graduation) to see if my school had sent the verification and it always said "Not Received." So Tuesday, I checked my email, and they had emailed the ATT number/document. I guess they send it to you just as soon as they receive verification.

Good luck to you !! It shouldn't be much longer.

TNUP2JEN!

Best of luck with boards! I recommend a steady diet of reviews & practice test in preping for boards, but I took mine the old pen & paper/2day way!. Did you get to take any practice test while in school?

Hello all. I am a brand new RN. I was lucky enough to get hired on a telemetry floor where I have worked for almost 3 months. I am still on orientation to the unit but have a "full pateint" load of 6 patients.

I currently live and work in NJ and I make $24/hour. However, my wife and I will be visiting the Raleigh/Durham area on Monday! We are serioulsy thinking of leaving NJ and moving to NC. IS Duke University Hospital a good place to work?? We have a 4 year old and are thinking that the tuition grant program they offer would be a good deal for us(no college expenses to us).

I have head that Duke does not pay the best compared to other area hospitals. Is this true? I would consider agency/travel nursing in order to make more money, but I also need family health coverage.

I would appreciate any help/feedback. This seems like an excellent website! Thank you.

Travel Companies have great benefits also, just as a staff nurse has. If you want to travel with a travel company and work, you may see what area you want to live, work, and select a school for your child. You may be much more selective as you learn the area and find out if this is where you want to stay.

Good Luck.

My program at VGCC required us to use ATI as a means of practice testing, so I've been reviewing my old exams and studying up on areas I was weak in. I also joined www.learningext.com and have been doing the practice quizzes and tests as well as reviews. Finally, I have a Kaplan book with over 3,000 questions I've been slowly working on. I'm getting together with my old study group once a week until boards, just doing practice questions and talking out the stuff we don't remember (yikes, lab values!). Thanks for the well-wishes! :balloons:

Haven't met too many folks from our neck-of-the-woods...Creedmoor/Butner/Stem area is pretty teeny - I've only been there about three years now. :monkeydance:

Good day !
