does anyone work a side job that is non-nursing related to help prevent burnout? if so what do you do & was it difficult to get this job due to possible being "overqualified"?

I work in the high performance enginering world..the company I work for makes corvettes and other late model sports cars go faster---cause you know a new corvette just does not go fast enough...
It was easy for me to get the job as my husband owns the buisness...but in all reality, sometime I enjoy it more than nursing. I like negotiating deals, calling suppliers and even general cleaning and errand running for the guys at the shop. Keeping cutsomers informed, and schedualing events--very simliar to nursing in a way.

I am a stay at home mom.
It is not a hard job to get for a lot of people.
The money is not good. I get paid with love.
The nursing job is per diem and pays well enough.

I used to waitress before becoming a LPN, then RN... I loved it!!! I have often thought of doing it again... My family is like: Are you crazy, you are a nurse??? So...... You can really make "bank" if you work @ the right place. Especially this time of year... My friend makes around $500.00 for a Saturday shift... But, here I am still doing nursing.. I have thought over and over again about becoming a tastefully simple consultant. The pay sucks, but the product is awesome and I think it would be fun.. Well good luck and take care... Just my 2 cents...

If I had training in something else, I sure would. And, sometimes, I think about applying for phlebotomy positions at labs on the weekends I am off (I was a phlebotomist for many years and still retain my certification). I wouldn't even mention that I am a nurse...I just want to draw blood and leave.

My husband and I own four horses.Since we have very large barn on 150 acres we take in abused and neglected horses for the Humane Society in our area. We rehabilitate the horses and then help in the screening process for a new "family". We also foster dogs when the regular foster families are full.
We also both volunteer for the battered womens shelter in our area. I help in areas such as housing placement when the women feel they ready to leave the shelter. My husband offers pro bono legal services to those women seeking assistance. He also sits on the board as a non-paid member.
Although none of these are paid positions, it is an awesome way of giving back. Really puts "life" into perspective. My payment is seeing that once abused horse leave with a happy family or having a women hug me when she moves into her very first apartment, that will be a safe haven for her children!
That's when we look at each other and say, wow are we blessed
or what?!

I'm a medical transcriptionist and I plan to continue once I've graduated and am working as a nurse. I love my job and the pay is really good but I needed the stability of health insurance, benefits, etc. that nursing offers. I think it will be kind of relaxing since it's so much less physically demaning than nursing.

I drive a school bus PRN, and volunteer at my kids' school as a tutor and mentor. I know it would be a nightmare for some people, but I LOVE the kids. They are like a huge dose of energy for me. It's nice, sometimes, just to spend time with the happy-go-lucky. :nuke: I certainly don't do it for the money. :chuckle
