does anyone work a side job that is non-nursing related to help prevent burnout? if so what do you do & was it difficult to get this job due to possible being "overqualified"?
That is one of the perks: there is so much variety within Nursing that if you get bored or burnt out, you have noone else to blame but yourself!
It is difficult to get a non-nursing job unless you have some other type of connection.
For example, in the past I have wanted to work a place that is right down the road. I even told them I was willing to accept LPN pay becasue i was that interested. But, people assume there is somehtng "wrong" with a RN who will accept LPN pay, for whatever reason. So they did not hire me. Another time (different reasons) I applied for a Vet Tech position, and despite my large amount of experience working with all animals, having my own farm, etc etc. I was not offered the job.
I'm in somewhat a delimma right now about the same thing. I have done other things besides Nursing. But Nursing is the bulk of my experience. The general Public who views Nursing as a handmaiden job that pays well cannot conceive why a RN would not want to be an RN any longer. So they assume something is "wrong" if the RN applies for a different type of job.
But that won't keep me from proceeding. Because.....I am embarrased of this field!

Honestly I've never been burnt out in nursing.
