No nursing jobs in 2012 ???

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Please look forward two years...do you think the job market (for RN's) will be worse than it is now? Of course the question is hypothetical, but I'm really concerned with socialized medicine and low wages for nurses.

Thanks for your comment!

You said Democrats shot down Nixon's proposal, which is incorrect. You are obviously a Republican and I'm not. I think you should always stand up for your opinions and to beware of people with political leanings and understand their prejudices. "Bulldoze" is a perjorative term that shows where you are coming from.

Actually, I am not a Republican which means you are making an assumption based on your own biases. I really hope thait the Dems get a bill through without Republican support. If it makes things better, then great. Well done. If it blows up in their faces, then the Democratic party will implode and maybe we will get what we really need, a viable third party.

The Republicans Party has ALREADY imploded.

I am biased toward your contrary attitude.

The Republicans Party has ALREADY imploded.

Very true. But in order for a viable third party to come into existence, it will require the moderate factions fom BOTH side to finally get so fed up that they band together. In case you didn't notice, the Republicans don't have enough numbers to block anything so if the Dems REALLY want to push something through, they can. Problem is, much of the fighting over this thing is within the party, including organized labor.

"I'm sorry is "Don't Drink the Kool-Aid" a therapeutic response?"

No, I'm sorry. I didn't realize the forum was for therapeutic responses only. I must have missed that instruction.

The job market for RNs will not be worse than it is now. The job market for just about everything (outside of foreclosure and bankruptcy occupations) in 2012 will be much better than it is now. The economy will get better and some of the older nurses are going to have to retire. Some will choose to move on to advanced degrees like teaching or work in other areas of nursing. Someone is going to have to take their place. If you can avoid watching Fox news for a couple years, things will probably be ok.

Press-Gainey may not be so relevant if we had government insurance.

And we won't need to "thank them for choosing our hospital."

No more "customer service/hotel type" influence?

Hmmmmmm.....

My mom is from Japan, a first world country which has a universal healthcare system. While it's not perfect, people have coverage no matter what. Also, hospitals in Japan are much less fancy than American ones, save for the really rich ones. My mom thinks that American hospitals are so wasteful, that the customer service model is detrimental, and that hospitals are for healing and comfort, not customer service. I have to agree with her. Do people complain that the firefighters didn't give good service with a smile, or do they rate them on the fact that they saved people and didn't let the fire spread to the whole city?

Before you (not JoPACU, I'm using the plural you) bash universal healthcare so much, keep in mind that all the other developed countries have it. American mass media truly is so lucky that most Americans don't know much about the rest of the world so they can spread whatever propaganda they wish and have people swallow it hook, line, and sinker. If there was a universal system that made nursing a public service backed by guaranteed money rather than a capitalist service job in which my smiling at patients is more important than keeping them alive, maybe I'd consider staying in nursing.

I think it will be worse. Probably lots of foreign nurses flooding the market happy to accept $10 hr. as RN.

Seriously I think you are making such an understatement and your generalization can be hurtfull to a lot of foreign nurses (I'm a domestic nurse). Dollar in Europe stands very low these days so to come here and work for 10 dollars no one would think it is such an great opportunity anymore..foreign nurses would come to maybe work for 18,20 dollars but not for 10 for god's sake!! Enough said!

In the seventies, Richard Nixon, a Republican president if I'm not mistaken, proposed a health care bill very similar to the ones being kicked about the halls of Congress at this very moment. It was rejected en masse by (drum roll please) the Democratic controlled congress. If you are going to dredge up history, at least dredge it all up.

It was rejected because it wasn't good enough. Ted Kennedy to his credit went to his grave regretting his role in the missed opportunity...

And of course MSNBC, CNN, CBS, et al offer up only completely unbiased, factual, impartial, impersonal, and totally accurate stories with no thought to any agenda other than the good of the public?

The health care debate hasn't even gotten a good start in Congress and in spite of the President's best efforts to ram something through so quickly it wouldn't have to bear too much scrutiny, this isn't going to be quick and pretty. Plus any bill that eventually gets passed will have to go though a lengthy implementation process before it actually takes effect and then it will probably be phased in one or two provisions at a time. So the job prospects for 2012 are probably going to be more dependent on which way the economy decides to jump. If you can predict that one, please let me know. My 401K can use all the help it can get.

Well, i rather get accurate info from those other sations who aren't into scare tactics, outright LIES!, and stupid conspiracy theories like fake news. everytime, everyday, they are bashing the president because they want to see him fail and if that means the rest of america too, then so be it.

I am not counting on anything. I am starting to look for jobs even now, and it's only my first semester.
