Seems like I can't add a new topic. But GEO Arcadia is once again advertising for nurses. So how many NM's they been through lately? What a joke!

I see in the past few days GEO Arcadia looking for a nurse manager too. Things must really be jumping there lately! Anyone know any recent news on the place?

Regarding GEO Arcadia FL: I notice they are looking for a utilization nurse recently and of course, the usual openings for full and prn RNs and LPNs. Anybody working there now who is on this forum? If so, could you let me know how its going down there? (Even though I have a good idea!!!)

I was in ADN school 1992-94. As I recall, we lost less than a third of the starting class. Some for personal reasons and a few for math test problems. It seems ADN programs are very different in certain schools and I am sure the tougher economic and employment times have made a difference these days. Good luck in all cases.

I have 17 years RN experience and got my BSN in 2006. I got it just in case I need it down the road. I don't believe it can hurt. BUT maybe it won't help!

I can't remember when it was, but I remember seeing the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in person at the workplace waiting to talk to the medical director. She was wearing a pantsuit, but was as fine a woman as walked the earth. I asked a co-worker who she was. "A medical sales rep" If I was the medical director then, I would have offered to buy her company!

Speaking as a male RN with 17 years experience I have found where it may be easier to get hired (and I emphasize the "may") it is also easier to get fired. I have absolutely been discriminated against as a man in this profession on occasion. However, being a white male, I have ZERO opportunities to do much about it when it happens. (And yes, I have followed all the proper channels in most cases) I find the profession rewarding and would not change the decision I made to get into nursing. I truly do not know how I would be surviving today without the license. And currently I have an excellent job that is working out quite well. However, it is no walk in the park to be a male in nursing. And yes, there have been times when the target was very brightly painted on my back!

I have been an RN 17 years. I honestly didn't know if I could bathe anyone else when I got into this field. That was my biggest concern. The blood and the pus and the gore, well, depends on what you get into as a specialty. I can say I have mainly done nursing home and home care in my career, and not a whole lot of blood and gore have I seen. Psych nursing is cool, however there is a lot of tricky problems patient-wise and colleague-wise in that field. I have worked in it and found it ok, but nothing I would want to spend a career in. And be forewarned nursing school is tough and much of what you learn in nursing school has not a whole lot to do with everyday nursing in a real live employment setting. Good luck.

Drummed into your head "pain is the 5th vital sign" and "pain is whatever the patient says it is for them" Right? Isn't that the gospel truth? Or is it gray and cloudy on the horizon?

I am totally with you on "perseverate." I worked at a brain injury facility and they used that word constantly. I had never heard it before (or since!) Another word I latched onto in this business is "decompensate" which like "perseverate" can mean a number of vague conditions. "I saw Charlie decompensating at the bar last night"!!! Really tough these days is the elimination of "qd" "bid" "tid" and "hs" I still use those terms as a matter of habit, but they are now naughty terms. What is an old, decompensating nurse supposed to do?!?!

I am an "old" nurse (age 55) I am ok with computers as I have been using them for many years in work situations and outside of nursing. The one thing I have learned about computers is there are always multiple ways to get jobs done. I personally have always looked for the simplist and most direct way to achieve any task. Computers can be a pain at times, but in the long run they are the best way to get things done.

On the one hand it is annoying. But any publicity about nursing is good publicity, don't you think?

Yes definately. I work in Florida and really would like know Spanish. Would save me a lot of extra work.
