What is the upstate NY job market like?

I'm graduating in August 2010 with a BSN. I'm in NYC now but what I'm hearing about the job market isn't that encouraging. I'm expanding my search outside of NYC. I'd be willing to consider anything within 100 miles, for starters. (I have nothing against other states either, but it's a little too overwhelming to consider job hunting from a distance.) I have looked at the listings for a few hospitals in Ulster, Orange and Dutchess counties and they don't say that experience is required. If there are any members here who live/work in those areas, can you tell me what the job market is like? What is it like to live/work there?

I live in Westchester and the market to get into a hospital is not good right now...I graduated a year ago and I only know one person in my class that got into a hospital after four months of applying. I work in LTC because I needed to get a job.Its not horrible but it seems as though it is easier to get a job in ltc and if you are desperate. I am not sure about Ulster or Orange but I think since you have your BSN you will have a better chance at a job. GL

I know, Now, to me, it's Albany. I used to think Westchester was Canada.

Chaya, you'll have an excellent shot with the BSN. And you are Orthodox, no? WALK IN to Maimonides with your resume and find the managers. It couldn't hurt. Do the same with LI Jewish and Beth Israel.

We are always looking for nurses where I live, but mostly LTC. There's a shortage of RNs here.

your clinical rotation was your opportunity to make a good impression, and speak to the people on the floor...they know how u work, if u left a good impression then u at least have ur foot in the door

ASN (pinning on thursday woohoo and congrats to you too!) with 2 jobs opportunities, maybe 3. i'll let u guys know how THAT goes, im not going to jinx myself butttttttttttt i've been networking since the last semester started. dont wait till the last minute when theres 10 thousand grads looking for jobs in THIS market

Clinicals are for learning, first and foremost. It's a big world out there; the hospital where you did your clinicals isn't' always the best match for you, career-wise.

There are plenty of opportunities in Ulster, Dutchess and Orange counties of NY for a new BSN graduate. I also relocated to get an opportunity to work in a hospital. I was recently hired at The Kingston Hospital in Kingston, NY (Ulster) and recieved my license this past March '10. I will highly recommend you start researching the area, hospitals, and apply early if you are serious about relocating. I'm not sure where you live now, but upstate, NY is quite a change from NYC ("downstate"):D. Congratulations and good luck on all your future endeavours!!!

I'm not familiar with the Finger Lakes area. Are you originally from that area? Finger Lakes is quite a distance from NYC. However, I know for a fact that the further up North you go the greater opportunities you will find as a BSN prepared nurse. Honestly, I don't see the situation in the job market in NYC improving anytime soon, especially with all the hospital closings.
