no non-profit hospitals are not allowed to contribute to IRA accounts, which are 401K and 403B accounts. They do contribute to a pension plan, which is different from an IRA. I believe you have to work at Memorial for a period of time (which I do not remember since I have been there for so long) to become vested. when you are vested, you will receive money from Memorial when you retire.
Hi Jenna,
I also work at MSKCC as a PCT and have for 3 years now. I am about to graduate with my RN-AASN and have a job here (I am told verbally by nurse manager), when I complete my NCLEX.
My question to you as another MSKCC employee is fo you think that it's smart to take a RN position on a unit you already have been working as a tech? I am alos interested in NYP Columbia as I am interested in cardiac ICU nursing and feel this would be a great place to start and learn a lot. I am just not sure I will be able to get a position their as a new grad. The other thing is I am worried I will always compare it to MSKCC. As we both know it's a GREAT place to work and the people here are awesome. I know I would be happy here but I also feel I need to keep my options open and look at other hospitals.
What was your feeling about Cornell that made you stay at MSKCC?
Do you have any thoughts on Columbia? I will be living close to Columbia and could walk to work, which is a huge benefit.
Oh and at MSKCC you need to be working full time for 5 years to be fully vested. To answer someone's question about MSKCC's pension.
Let me know your thoughts on MSKCC verses Columbia? I am interested in only ICUs as well if that helps at all. So I only have one option here at MSKCC but Columbia has several ICUs.
Thanks!

Non profits can have 403(b) plans, which are similar to 401(k) plans, where employees can make contributions. They can also make contributions to what are "traditional" pension plans, where there are little or no employee contributions, and the employee receives a guaranteed monthly benefit at retirement.

Do a search and look for any postings from billythekid. I believe, he was accepted into the program awhile back.
I've heard more favorable postings from NS than I had of LIJ's critical care program. I used to work at NS-Manhasset years back as a medical secretary and enjoyed working there in general.

Kings County is part of HHC and from what I hear we are currently having a hiring freeze. The starting pay for most HHC hospitals is approximately 65K/ yr and there is about a 5-6K night differential and you also get 900 - 1000 for your BSN. As someone has already mentioned NYSNA benefits suck. They have changed our perscription benefits and they have taken away our vision benefits........ Experience is awesome, since it's a city hospital and we see anything and everything.
Mount Sinai Queens is 61K for days. They only require 12 shifts per month not 13 as many other hospitals do. Benefits start 90 days after hiring and it is 1199. Tuition reimbursement is effective 1 year after employment at 6 credits per semester.
Not sure when the hiring freeze started but they called me a couple weeks ago for an interview for a med/surg position. I declined the interview so unable to find out more info.
