Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC

U.S.A. New York

Published

Good day! Anyone working in HSS? I am very interested about this hospital because it is the first Magnet hospital in NYC. However, due to the hospital's size, I would expect that the salary that they offer would be lower than the other hospitals in NYC. My other concern is the working environment of the hospital, is it good and tolerable? I have heard that the hospital also has a Clinical Ladder and that is a plus for the salary.

Does the hospital gives bonuses and market increase? Is the orientation program efficient? Those are just some of my concerns at this time.

My main concerns are: I want to be in a hospital where I could learn and grow most and of course, be justly compensated.

Hi Uplifting RN,

How do you like HSS? Do you know if they are still interested in hiring new grads? How soon did the Nurse Recruiter call you back for an interview? How was the interview process?

Where in NY is HSS??

HSS is located on the upper east side of manhattan. i don't start my training there until september 8th. as far as i know they are still hiring new grads. the recruiter returned my email the next day after i emailed her letting me know when/if they were hiring. the interview was laid back and it included a tour of the OR in my case.

I really want to work for HSS, but it seems like it's impossible to get a job anywhere. I applied to a couple hospitals, but no one has called me back yet. *sigh*

Hello Uplifting RN--I know you posted this a while back but I am desperate and I am trying to find out about this hospital--Can you give some insight about it--I currently work in Med Surg-Telemetry and I absolutely hate it--the only reason I went to MedSurg because I was told it was the best thing to do to get experience--well I have been at it for 3.5 monthis now and I have discovered that it is not the thing for me. I would love to get into OR--love the schedule and I definitely do not want to do nights--can you give me some advice please--I would love it if you can PM me about the hospital, salary and the OR program. Thanks in advance for your reply.

While you're waiting for your PM, I'm sure this info has been posted somewhere. It's either in this thread or the NY hospital salary sticky.

ROCKZ--I don't get it--how did you go about getting an interview with themj--I sent them two emails and I did not get a response. How long before you got one?

silvermist . . a friend of mine told me about the hospital.. so i went online and looked up HSS.. and i found the contact email for the nurse recruiter. . i emailed her directly and attached a copy of my resume. . she replied back the following day stating that the only opening for new grads are the PACU residency program which starts in nov 3. there are 6 available positions for the program.. and i believe theres 9 or 12 including me they are paneling next week.. ::crossing fingers:: i hope i get it.. i absolutely love it there..

Hi Rockz--thanks for replying so quickly--can you tell me more about the PACU residency--what does it entail--the hours--what about the recruiter? May I have her name and her email address? Do you think that maybe because I have a current job (I currently work in a cardiac hospital and I hate it so much there, I am dying to get out and I've only been there about 4 months). Would that disqualify me for this HSS? I just got my license in May of this year too. I was interested in their OR residency, but I never thought about PACU--I know it's a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, but what do you actually do there. I want so badly to get out of the cardiac floor. Let me know. Thanks much.

Those of you who are working at HSS how do you like it? How was the New Grad Residency program?

well i have officially been hired in the OR at HSS :yeah:!! it's bitter sweet because the job depends on how i did on my nclex yesterday.... i am a wreck waiting for my results :crying2:. if everything works out i will be starting 9/8/08 @ a little over $69,000. benefits take 3 months to kick in. there are 11 and 12 hour shifts available in the OR. no weekends or holidays either! also everyone i met in the or seems sooo nice! i met the nursing manager and the director of the OR! i want this job soooo bad.... it's so close i can taste it but i have to wait for my results.... this has been the hardest 24 hours of my life so far and i still have 24 more to go :sniff:. please pray for me :saint:!!!

Hi UpliftingRN,

I am extremely interested in the OR Residency program at HSS. Since you have been in the program, what are your thoughts about it? Have you enjoyed it so far? I meet with the panel really soon, and I am really hoping to get the job!! Can you give me any advice about panel? I have very little experience in the OR, but from my observation days, I know that is where I want to work. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!!!
