New Nurse Graduate-ASN

Hello, I am about to graduate from an ASN Nursing program in Florida and plan on moving to Colorado. I am getting nervous reading all the posts regarding finding a RN job as a new grad, and throw ASN on top of it. Is it really going to be that difficult finding a job? I plan on being enrolled in an ASN- BSN program while I am applying to jobs. While browsing for jobs I have also noticed there are multiple newgrad programs for hospitals, but again all require a BSN. As much as I do not prefer to, I have come to the conclusion that I am probably going to have to start out in a SNF vs in Peds (Childrens Hospital of CO) where I dream of being :crying2:

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it!!

I'm sorry, but I do think you're going to have a difficult time finding work without any experience. As I'm sure you know, most places require experience, and those that do hire new grads, often require a BSN.

You will probably need to get your feet wet with a SNF. As a Children's employee, I know that they will not hire an ADN without any experience.

I am also from FL, trying to get to Co and only have my ADN. I have 6 months experience on a medical floor and have had absolutely no luck. I have come to the conclusion that I will probably stay untill after my 1 yr mark. But maybe you will have better luckk

Don't let people trick you by thinking you wont be able to get a job as an Associate. Yes, there are a few hospitals who want to hire only BSN's, BUT if you have that 1st year under your belt and plans to get or have already started your BSN, then you will get hired. They just wont hire new grad Associate's.

My advice, if you can get a job in Florida, do so and stay for a year or so to get that all important experience, then come out here. The mountains aren't going anywhere. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

BTW, I am a new grad Associate and I got a hospital job.

What hospital, if I may ask?

To be clear, to me a "new grad" is someone with less than 6-12 months of experience.

Also look at clinic nursing. They will sometimes take new grads and its a good paced environment to work on your assessment and documenting skills. I see alot of people jump right into SNF without even considering the option of clinic. Maybe you can see about a PEDS clinic?

I got a job at Banner as a new grad with an ASN with no previous medical experience, no volunteer experience, limited work experience period in the past 10 years (7 months non medical related). It's possible, it's hard but it's possible.

Mi Vida Loca...What unit do you work on and what Banner facility? I just applied to a pediatric position at the hospital in Greeley. My fingers are crossed that I at least get an interview I love working with kids and have always wanted to be a peds nurse.

I am not really sure why anyone would be trying to trick you. But as other's have stated the job market in CO for ASN is a little difficult. If you have previous experience in the medical field (like maybe as a medic?) you have a better chance. Look at the hospital job listings. There aren't that many and they clearly state their requirements.

No one on this forum is trying to trick or mislead anyone. But sometimes a little honestly is warranted.

I worked on the Peds unit. It's probably my job you just applied for. LOL I got a job in the ED in Cheyenne so I am going there.

Do not listen to these people, yes the job market is tough every where but you can find work as a ADN nurse. I just moved from FL on Oct. 1st 2011, yeah last month, with a ADN and got the first job I applied for and I am a new grad.

A girl I graduated with in August, moved out here too at the same time and got a job as an ADN. My wife, who does have 10 years experience, got a job as an ADN.

Great attitude, good resume will beat out a BSN with a poor resume/attitude any day. BSN does not make them anymore of a nurse than you are.

Private message me and I'll give you 2 hospitals (I had a another offer from another hospital as a ADN SHOCKER) to apply at that I know for sure hire ADN's.
