Wondering if anyone would be willing to share how much they are making as a New NP and how many hours that is for?

Hi everyone.

Graduated in August 2019

location: North Florida

Speciality: outpatient Medical ped/Adult dermatology (no previous experience)

100k/annual + wRVU on each patient visit

Work 4 days (Mon-Fri 8-5), no weekend, no call, full benefits, 2 weeks paid vacation, 6 month orientation by physician, 2 personal scribes/CMA for each provider and 2,000 CME credit.

I know I am in a speciality so the salary is different than other positions, but I hope this is helpful for new grads looking into dermatology or related specialties! I hope I got offered a good contract for my speciality as a new graduate ? All my school stressed was do not take a job for less than 90k/year??? (Some lame advice ?) thank you, hope this helps!

@ Elysia11 and Rock nurse, makes me happy to see that new grads like you guys are coming out of school making bank. We shouldn’t accept less than 100k out of schill. So your teacher was absolutely right! lol. Congrats to the both of you on securing sweet jobs right out of school with fantastic salaries. All new NP right out of school reading this post should see your post and be motivated to negotiate for nothing less.

Oh that makes me feel good! Yes, I hope this helps many new graduates because I did not know much about what/how I should be negotiating.

I was hoping to hear from NP's in CA! As a staff RN making $67 an hour I hope I don't take to hard a pay cut as an NP. I'm an operating room nurse so can go straight to working for a surgeon but still!

I'm in Calif. NP pay varies by specialty and location. As a new grad primary care NP last year, my first year pay was $124K in a rural area with a very low cost of living. However, areas with a big supply of NPs, such as San Diego and LA pay the same or less. It's supply and demand. Bay Area pays a bit more, but not enough to compensate for the high cost of living.

Acute Care NPs generally make more money. Other lucrative specialties are psych, interventional pain mgt, and derm.

If you are outside the Bay Area and a new grad primary care NP, plan on making $100 to $110K your first year and you may get bonuses on top of that. You can make more money if you go where there is a shortage of providers, like the Central Valley.

You should ask NPs who work in surgery what they make. I am curious, though why you want to be an NP. RNFA seems like a better fit if you want to stay in surgery.

Specializes in OR, NP student.

I’m trying to actually get out of surgery eventually but maybe will wait a few years so I have more experience as an NP before changing directions. I’d eventually like to end up in derm.

Specializes in MSN, FNP-BC.

New grad FNP here. My main job in specialty care is $80k/year, part time, full benefits, 4 weeks PTO, CME allowance plus tons of free CME, free health insurance for just myself. I will also have a generous amount of admin time that I can do either at home or in the office. Very supportive academic environment.

My side gig is in a rural NP owned urgent care. Start at $55/hr and go up to $60/hr after credentialing is done. No benefits but it's flexible and keeps my hard earned skills in use. I also did a rotation in this clinic while I was in school and really enjoyed it.

How many hours a week are you working for $67/hr as a staff RN? If more than 40 hrs a week, you won't be taking a pay cut, that is, if you negotiate.

As a new grad last year, I made $125K in CA, 2 hrs west of the bay area, with a $5K bonus working 40 hrs a week (often less as I was salary). I'm in specialty now making $140K with an opportunity to exceed my income with RVUs 1.5 years later (yea I know). So...you can make more, just have to look and negotiate.

Hi guys. did anyone work as FNP in Maryland especially as a new grad. I have a long ways to go before I graduate considering I just started school but I would like to know what I'm getting into to prepare early. I hope to make at least 100k as an FNP. I plan to work around the PG and Howard County area but would be interested in the Baltimore and DC area as well. I have read so many posts of new grads negotiating their salary. How do you go about that when I'm a new grad with no NP experience? I will be graduating with a DNP if that helps any. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Specializes in Adult, Gero, NICU, Peds, wound medicine.

MS. 85K, 2000 cme 1st year then 1000 after, 2 weeks paid pdo, 6 holidays paid, medical/dental, etc, paid malpractice. Paid for productivity above base. Wound center.

The brutal truth is that you don't have a lot of negotiating power as a new grad.  For the greater Baltimore and DC area 100K as a new grad FNP is quite reasonable.

I suggest you choose your first job based on if it is a good work environment that will provide you will good learning opportunities.  After 2 years of experience, then you will be in a much better position to negotiate salary.

Thank you so much! I didn't think new grads would get much experience to negotiate so good to know so I don't try. I will be happy if I could get a job with good learning opportunities, good working environment/culture. I would think for PG and Howard County it would be reasonable to expect ~85-90K as new grad? Or is that me being naive and underpaid?
