New LPN students to start soon !! Come share your experiences :)

Published

I am starting in September I figured it would be nice to start a thread where all of us new students could come and and share our experiences/help eachother out as we are on our way to be nurses :)

I finished my first week of Nursing school last week. I had two test!!! It was so much information to learn in so little time. I am studying as we speak for test we are having next week. All in all I am enjoying it thoroughly and love the challenges.

Hi Lorrie, Here is a hint for you. Depends on your book but my book have the chapter summaries at the end of each chapters. I review that over and over and over again until I obtain the information. Also there are chapter objectives in the beginning of the chapters so I answer those questions and review them for test as well. My instructor told us that is mainly what we want to study because test come from the learning objectives. Try that!! My first week in AP was not the best but since I know now exactly what to study, that will be the last bad week I have in that class. GOOD LUCK!!

Starting August 17th and it has been a long road getting here...I originally got my BS in biology and after sitting out a semester and figuring out that there wasn't a whole lot I could do besides teach or go back to school I went to the BSN program at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Just after starting that my wife (now ex) found out she was pregnant so I quit and got a job at Tyson Foods as a supervisor in their Berry Street plant in Springdale, AR. For those of you who have never been inside a meat/food processing factory let me warn you...don't ever work at one of these places. Management or not it is a terrible job. Anyway, back to the point...after about four and a half years of that my wife and I divorced and after staying at Tyson a few months longer I decided I'd seen enough of chicken processing and I'm finally back in school. It isn't a BSN like I wanted but it's a start and I'm just really thankful that I've had the chance to go back and get into a field that I chose to be in...

Good Luck! I am also in the same boat! The plant I was a Production Supervisor and they closed the doors. So now I decided to return to school after being out 22 years. We already had a 3 week dosage calculation math course before starting school. First day of class is August 10th. I have 3 kids and I hope to set an example to them that schooling is very important! They see me studying and can't believe how much there is.

I wish you the best of luck through out these next months!

Take care!

ok well I am brand new all around. Just joined allnurses and I'm starting school this fall. I'm not starting until october which seems so far off on one hand and way too close on another. lol. So psyched. Going to prism career institute in philadelphia so whoo! Well good luck to all and Congrats to everyone for getting in and starting something new.

I am still waiting for somebody to tell me how their first weeks in NS were. I know some of you have mentioned that there was too much information all at once and also exams like immediately after but I need to know more information like stories one hears about instructors being mean and dropping as many students as they can. I have heard of classes starting with about 50 students and then half of them being dropped so the school can have just like 20 students after the other 25 students have bought books and everything needed, only to be dropped. I have also heard of students being dropped at their last semesters. I do not know the reasons this happens but I am curious as to why. Do medical students and students in other careers get dropped as easily as nursing students are? I would also like someone to advise me on what fundamental of nursing book i can read before we get a list of books we can buy when i start school in two weeks. I will appreciate any information from anyone on any tips before i start school.

I start the lvn program at acc in november...still a while to go but already getting nervous!

i start the lpn program at sheridan tech august 24th! can you say anxious, excited & nervous?!

I start the LPN program at Central Tech in Drumright OK on Aug 24th. Very close, and I am very excited. Our program supplies 3 set of scrubs in a cafe au late shade of brown, a Littman stethoscope , BPC, watch, 2 pairs of shoes, a pack of accessories, scissors, flashlight, all sort of lttle needs, a huge stack of books lab jackets, a set of white scrubs and new shoes for graduation and more. It is self paced and I sighned a 15 month contract with the option of completing in 11 months or less. I have to attend 24 hrs a week, and plan to do 30 since I work S-S-M 12 hrs in a local hospital.

Tell me how you did a self paced program. I have heard wonderful things and negatives as well. How do you feel about it. I realize it will be a huge challenge time wise, and I am an older than dirt student. Any pointers for a grandmother reaching retirement age and returning to school?:typing

I have just finished the LPN Program at VGCC in North Carolina. The first week was very hectic. Trying to get everything together and keeping which instructor is doing what. There is alot of information within the first few weeks. Find the threads on here about study techniques it will really help you as far as learning to study for nursing exams . Because these exams are not like other tests you may have taken in the past. We lost 8 students our first semester but it was not due to our instructors, we had to maintain a B average or fail and many of them did. Second semester we lost 3 and the last semester everyone made it. Our last semester was pretty easy compared to our other two. As far as what fundamental book to start looking over. Your school bookstore should have the name of thhe book that you will be using. Our books came in a bundle because it was cheaper for us that way. Good Luck everyone and this forum will really help during school there is so much information if you look for it. Good Luck and have a great year or two if you are doing your RN. :wink2:

I am expecting it to be hectic and all, so I am gearing up and getting set. Thanks for the input.

I start on August 31st with our orientation on the 27th, and I am so nervous/excited! My school wont give me the book list until the orientation though! Talk about keeping us all anxious!

After all the horror stories about how hard it is, I decided to buy my own Barron's A&P Study Guide and start some studying off of that. I figure if I know the basic A&P concept before the course starts, then my semester might be a bit more bearable.

For anyone currently in one of their semesters; what are the clinicals like? What should we expect for our first day?
