New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Hi there I have another question here. I hope somebody answers this.

I went to an education consultant and he mentioned about the GAP program. He described it as similar to the BP that you have mentioned. I asked him about BP and GAP. But he said he is only familiar with GAP. So I'm wondering if....

1. Is GAP program similar to the bridging course?

And then he mentioned about the second option. I have to study for two years in NMIT (An australian school). I will study a vocational course related to nursing. It will cost less (about 6000 AUD-w/out the show money)

So for me it's a nice option because it costs less plus I can avail the permanent residency after. But it seems a long way before I get the title as an Australian nurse there. Although I have the choice to do the bridging course after.

So what do you think?

@ wingcharm, hi! m one of the avid silent readers of this forum.

what does GAP mean?

coz there's something fishy 'bout it...the education consultant said u can be a student without the show money?

i thought DIAC specifically said that in order to be granted a student visa, one must show evidence of funds?

and why should u study a vocational course, ur already a nurse...

bridging will help us overseas nurses register & work as Division 1 nurse in Au.:twocents:

u mean ul go to Au & have a career change?

i also attended one of those seminars who offer live&work options...

they require 3mos study here then they could help with the Au student visa. the speakers made it all sound easy as pie. after doing research here & there... i guess i'd best follow some of our ka-forum nurses who already made the journey... hehehe :heartbeat:nurse:

hi there. for those people who wants to become independent and choose other countries more than the country where they family reside i salute you all because that was me before.. but i just want to share my own experience. i choose to be here in UK than in Oz where my brother is residing just to fulfill my dreams on my own and not depending to anyone. However, that was the biggest mistake i ever done. you know what you cant trust every Filipino here they might be the one who will let you down. but most people who are successful here are those people who live with their families. but of course every person is unique and we have different kind of future and opportunity. you just have to find yours. but remember blood is always thicker than water. Goodluck to us. treasure your family. in the end of the rocky road they are the only one who will walk with you all the way till you reach the end. Godbless nurses...

Hi Dorzlei, thanks for the reply. Sorry if you misunderstood but what i meant is the agent said I'll just pay 6000 AUD and other fees excluding the show money. I still have to give show money, he is just emphasizing my fees for the tution, travel and other expenses. He actually gave me two options:

1. The GAP which I assume is the bridging course because I only have to study for three months then I can be a nurse.

2. Getting a vocational course and study for two years. Then get a work. And if i have enough savings, I can study again to be a div 1 nurse.

*He suggested the second option because he said it is cheaper

*So I assumed, he was talking about getting a certificate iv in nursing to be a div 2 nurse first.

But then when I checked the NMIT web, they don't offer that course so I realized that maybe he is suggesting other course unrelated to my field. But then one nurse (who availed the agent's offer) said that she will take the community service worker course. I don't know who suggested it but she said it is the best vocational course for nurse. But I don't get it! What's the connection of this course to my field?

However, I read one post in this thread mentioning about the community service worker course. I tried asking but nobody answered me yet.

Now I've decided to still choose getting a vocational course which is the certificate iv in nursing, from another school. Now my dilemma is this:

1. How much is this course which I will take for 1-1 1/2 years, compared to BP which is for 3 mon. only?

*Because if the cost of the vocational course doesn't have much difference to BP, then I'll just take the BP path.

You see, at this time, we only have enough money for a vocational course. So if I'll choose it, I'll be able to process things quickly and go to OZ immediately. Unlike the BP (If it is really more expensive), it will take me more months of waiting to go to OZ.

For now, I'm planning to ask another educ. consultant to enlighten me about the BP and voc. course expenses.

But guys, if you have the answer to my questions, please do help. :( Thanks.

@chocokat79:

hi! my classmate and i were just talking about you during orientation this pm. maybe they changed it and are actually accepting now. as u can see, the board changes policies every 6 months. so they are probably accepting now.that's really great news. good luck to you! cheers! :)

Hello mate!

It's good to hear that you're now having your conversion here in Curtin, WA. I'm planning to enroll in Curtin too this coming July. My documents are all ready for sending in NMBWA. I'm just waiting for our permanent residency visa which would be coming out anytime soon then the rest would be a breeze. I'm from batch 09, took the board on june, my ielts on july then went here to process our PR (do paperworks, medicals, and stuffs). Last January, my parents booked a flight back to our country so that I can register with PRC.

I would definitely like to hear your stories in Curtin. I hope we could meet. I'm just 6kms away from you.

I've just discovered this site lately and I've just registered today to send you a PM but unfortunately, I'm not yet allowed.

I'm hoping we could meet soon.

Cheers!

Terd

PS. I've read that Yayey is going to Curtin too this July. Hey mate! We'll be classmates. I can pick you up at the airport if you like. I can tour you also around Perth. Let's have some sightseeing and plenty of chitchat and story sharing...

dilemmas keep on coming I don't know what to do......i have choose between IV certificate or post-reg program (which is cheaper and convienient between the two).

Certificate iv leads to caregiving/nurse assistant. Conversion leads to registration as a nurse. 1.5 million pesos for your conversion will be your best investment in your lifetime

first, 6K AUD for your agent will be a burden for you.. you could buy a 2nd hand car for that here.. you can do the processing by yourself but you have to do some research on how to.. but this thread can help you alot in doin so..

Second, certificate IV in nursing would lead you to Division 2 nurse.. Div 2 nurse works under the supervision of div 1 nurse... before it was just a 1-yr course, but recently they've changed it to 1 & a half yr... some uni here offers that course for 10K AUD before for an international student (tution fee for the whole yr).. with the current changes im not sure how much it cost.. this course doesnt have complicated requirements like BP.. This is a TAFE course.. so one doesnt even need a nursing registration from overseas (not sure tho)..

BP cost approx 10K for just 3 months.. then ul be registered as div1 nurse..

so why go for cert IV rather than BP? :):D:confused::confused:

Thats correct, if you wanna become RN Div 1, just do the Pre-registration course and in 3 months you will be able to work as an RN Div1.

dilemmas keep on coming I don't know what to do......i have choose between IV certificate or post-reg program (which is cheaper and convienient between the two).

By ratio and proportion bp is cheaper and more convenient. Why go for 1.5yrs if there's bridging? You would need 1 million pesos for this certificate iv and study conversion again which is 1 year after graduating. The 2nd option is just crazy. And why go for agency if you can do this yourself? 6k is a rip off. Patiently read the whole thread and it's an honest and fact experience of aspirating nurses rather than an agency brain washing you and taking advantage of your innocence.

Hey guys!

Been a couple of weeks since I last come here to allnurses. I just finished sitting IELTS exam and still waiting result and I have already finish my application to NBV and NMBSW. I pass all requirement already and now I hoping for speedy approval to come soon.

@Terdjay

G'day!

Aussie Salute! Holy dooley! I'm gobsmacked from the good oils you have sharing with us especially in the SouthWales thread. Bloody oath! Like the many peoples, my problem is moolah on how to feeding myself in the land down under while schooling coz my relatives are such a catspiss considering the ratio and proportion of tuition fees to be exy. I know a few banana benders there but doubting they will let me staying to them. I guess I'll just be a wombat to surviving Aussie. So do you happen to be a sandgroper? I think I will just be a sheepshagger first before transferring to OZ as I hear the BP is way cheaper and relatively shorter. I'm really in a stonker right now. Its really difficult as I don't want to make a bluey.

Anyway if I chooses the Curtin route can I also be your mate? Sure would love to have a mate when I go to Aussie, it will be very sad without one. Wouldn't you?

Hooroo! Being gobbled up by mozzies.

first, 6K AUD for your agent will be a burden for you.. you could buy a 2nd hand car for that here.. you can do the processing by yourself but you have to do some research on how to.. but this thread can help you alot in doin so..

Actually, the 6K AUD mentioned by the agent is the "total fees" for the vocational course. So it includes the school fees, visa, miscellaneous expenses etc. The agent fee is P31,000 for the processing.

Anyway, I'verealized that the school which he is connected to only offers technical courses and only one nursing related course which is the Aged care cert. iii. So in short, I backed out to this second option.

BP cost approx 10K for just 3 months.. then ul be registered as div1 nurse..

so why go for cert IV rather than BP? :):D:confused::confused:

But then assuming that vocational course is much cheaper than the BP, I looked for TAFE schools offering other nursing related courses, and that's how I found out about the EN certificate. The cheapest school I saw offers 10K AUD for 1 year.

And so I realized that the expenses will be just close to BP. And so I've asked from my previous post if somebody could confirm to me the comparison of the BP fees and EN certificate fees.

So from what you've mentioned regarding the BP and EN cert. budget, I think I'll just choose the BP course. :) That's exactly what I need. Thank you for enlightening me.

i agree on what you said regarding with the post-reg bsn (or bp is it the same?) but my main problem is where i can get the 1m + show money??? my relatives have no intention to help me because i only accquired student visa.....is an agency my only last chance or their is another way around? need help

@wingcharm

we are both confused.....hopefully we can clear this up with the help of this thread (and its regular post(ers) :)
