Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
Good day guys!I have this question that has been bugging me for a long time. I have 2 years work experience from a hospital but I have resigned last march 2009 to focus on my IELTS, the problem now is I am having a hard time getting employed I want to register with NZMC my question is will NZMC accept my professional references even if the supervisors that made the references are from my previous employer? because currently I am not employed in a hospital.
Hope somebody can answer me.... thanks and Goodluck to all..
hi,
what NZMC? or do you mean New Zealand Nursing Council? anyway, the answer to your question is YES, it is okey if your references are from your previous employer. there is nothing unusual with that..
good luck..
Hi!! I really didn't browse all the replies you have.. but i want to share somethin to you since currently im a student here in Victoria, Australia.. I'm a Filipino, did finished my bachelor's degree there and opt to make some changes in my career so I applied for Australia for a bridging course... My studies about to end by mid of this year, just waiting for my hospital placement to complete..First, studying here is too costly.. i mean VERY VERY expensive.. so you need some support for that...
Second, when you apply for bridging course like a 7-week program, a training course for qualified overseas nurse, you need at least 1 year experience in hospital training (that's what Nurses Board of Victoria requires). But i dont know with some other states... and your IELTS should be 7 in all subtests..
first you need to apply to Board of Nursing for your qualifications which would take approximately 6 months.. if you are qualified then they will send you a letter of qualification then u can proceed to enrol at a qualified institution for this brigding course. The cheapest in Victoria is in University of Ballarat with about 10,000 AUD
Another pathway is (which I took) is on STUDENT visa.. which is enrolling at a Bachelor's of Nursing Degree in a university, which takes me 1 year and half to complete the course. Meaning you have 3 semesters to comlete and ofcourse triple the price for your tution fee.. but the good thing though is that, you need not to apply to Nurses Board of Victoria.. you do not need a 7 score in all subtest for your IELTS.. just 6.5 i think... and you can apply to a university even without hospital experience (as in my case as well), plus student visa means longer stay h
thanks for the info, hope you keep on sharing what's on the ground there..
good luck .,
hi thanks for the post.. i just want to ask about BP and bachelor's degree.. i have now letter from board of nursing of western australia and they allow me to take up BP or conversion which is the bachelor degree in a university. i am planning to enrol in VCHN in victoria since it was acredited by the NMBWA(nurse midwife of western ausi).. it is a 10 week program 4 weeks theoretical in victoria and 6 weeks placement in perth then you will now be eligible to register in NMBWA and work in west ausi as RN i want in west ausi coz i have a relative there. do your hear something about VCHN? they have also package for work placement and they will convert your short stay visa to work visa but you need to pay 7000AUD for that package aside from 10000AUD tuition fee.. do you think that conversion of visa is possible? i have 14 month experience here mostly in Med surg ward and as theatre nurse..i am also planning to take up a conversion for bachelor's degree in curtin university in perth for 1 year. it was so expensive though my visa is student visa which will allow me to work for 20 hours however it was very long course unlike in VCHN.. what do you think? which is better?
it's good to hear different opinion from different pint of view.. thanks a lot.. and goodluck to us.. tc
Hi lime... what's your course with your student visa? and what's VCHN? is it a community health nurse?
As far as I know.. the only way to become a registered nurse here in OZ is to take the certificate course for 3 months or graduate as a bachelor of nursing in one of the universities here.. you see.. there's two kinds of registered nurse here.. its either Division 1 nurse or Division 2 nurse... Div1 is higher ofcourse than div2.. Div 1 is a 3 yr course while div2 is just 1 yr.. but since your a registered nurse in Philippines.. you're not goin through 3 yrs.. coz some of your subjects will be credited.. so it would only take 1 and a half yr to complete...
and since you have 14 months experience why didnt you apply for NBV to take 3 months course wherein after completion you will be an RN here? why didnt you take a pathway that will lead you immidiately to the profession you want?
And about the placement package.. i have heard nothing of it... all i know is that when you are in Pre registration course for oversease qualified nurse (which is a 3moths course) that includes your clinical placement as well to any hospital you want.. the only way to convert your visa is to become a registered nurse here and be employed in a hospital that will sponsor you, thus converting your visa to a working one..
@ heart-block

im in university of ballarat right now... taking bachelor of nursing post-registration (bnp).. this is a one yr course.. after completion.. ub directs my course to bacehlor of nursing (bn) which is an extra semester (6 months) to complete the course. upon completion.. i will be reg as div1 nurse already.. right now.. i finished all my theory classes.. just waiting for my clinical placement.. then that's it...
as far as i know, these are the accredited pre registration courses from the nurses board of victoria:
la trobe university- course name: advanced diploma in nursing
university of ballarat- re-rentry program for div1 rn and pre-registration program for overseas qualified nurses (ppoqn)
here are some institution in victoria with accredited initial regestration courses for overseas qualified nurse (3 or so months course)
deakin uni
eastern health
education training and employment australia
la trobe uni
mercy health training institute
mt. alexander hospital
ramsay health care
robinvale district health service
royal womens hospital
south west healthcare
stawell regional health
st. vincent & mercy private hospital
victorian college of health and nursing (which is the college ur talking about)
for initial registration courses and ppoqn, one must comply all the requirements to nbv:
which is at least one yr experience in hospital and ielts band score of 7.0 and nothing below 7.0 in all subtests..
if one cannot comply to their requirements.. then you have another option.. the pre registration course.. which is a longer course..
for university of ballarat (1 1/2 yr)
no need to apply to nbv.. just apply directly to university.
ielts requirements as for now is 6.5 band score and nothing below 6.0 in subtests.. (i hope this will not change)
no need for clinical experience as well
you will be on student visa in which you're allowed to work for 20 hours a week
cheers!!

hmmm... does your course lead to registration as div. 1 nurse in victoria ?
as far as i'm concern, bn will not lead you to a registration.conversion programmes such as those offered by curtin and murdoch are approved and recognized and it will lead to div.1 nurse. please confirm
thanks.lots of options and pathways goodluck on your clinical placement ....
i checked ub's webisite:
http://www.ballarat.edu.au/programfinder/display.php?id=341
the bn(p) does not lead to registration with the nurses board of victoria, or alter nurse registration status either locally, or offshore. for models on how to register as a division 1 nurse with the nurses board of victoria, australia, refer to the school of nursing website.

as what i have told you.. i have entered first on bnp (bachelor of nursing postregistration) which definitely would not lead you to registration.. (i have completed that course for a year..) that is why ub have shifted me to bachelor of nursing (bn) (now i am in that course.. which would only take 1 more semester for completion.. then registration..
bn which is typically the course here in australia for the locals is a 3 yr course and immediate registration...
so accreditation from my previous academic subjects in the philippines plus bnp + bn (for just 6 months) = registration...
ub has been doin this for years for group of international students... most of my classmates are from india.. with the same pathway... as for the moment.. we're fifty in a class (block section for just international students of overseas nurses).. we start from bnp.. then we're now in bn doin our clinicals.. by june.. if we get things done.. registration will come..
so now.. we're applying in nbv for registration that will come in june.. our application in nbv will be under new graduates... not under "overseas trained nurse".. please refer to nbv website... which comes under new graduates the qualifacation would come under bachelor of nursing
@ wingcharm:
i was in sydney before i came to perth. i went to the NMBNSW, and the Board of nursing in Burwood. they no longer have bridging programs. what they recommend is to take the university stream. which is 2 years of study. i inquired at Univ of tech and UWS. they offer the programs...and are recognized by the NMBNSW...
