New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

i was in sydney before i came to perth. i went to the NMBNSW, and the Board of nursing in Burwood. they no longer have bridging programs. what they recommend is to take the university stream. which is 2 years of study. i inquired at Univ of tech and UWS. they offer the programs...and are recognized by the NMBNSW...

the college of nursing in burwood still offers the ASSESSMENT OF COMPETENCE PROGRAMS FOR INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED AND RE-ENTRY NURSES FOR 2010

My fellow nurses.. I just attended the free orientation to ANSC in Greenhills. They help to process things from Application to NBV, application of visa, accomodation for 13 weeks, student health insurance, air fare to NBV and finding an employer for you while you are on 3 months BP. But you will be on a student visa so that you can have a work for 20 hours a week to support your self while you are in NBV. In spite of that glamorous introduction, my eyes popped out when they laid out the overall expenses, 23,000 Australian Dollars for the whole package? That is too expensive and your sponsor must have an 17,000 Australian Dollars in their bank accounts.

Guys I need your advise. What are the universities in NBV which still have an intake for IEN"s this year? Let's say given 5 months of waiting for the eligibility from NBV can I still make it to apply for a univesity? And how much should it really cost for the 3 months BP,same with the expenses for food and accomodation? For thoe who are in Victoria right now please shed some information so that I can lend money for the entire cost that I will going to incur in Australia. Thank you for those who will going to reply. May God Bless yo all!

Hi sunchaser. Your post caught my eye, as I too have submitted an application to NSW-NMB. Did they tell you that they won't give eligibility to take the Competency Assessment Program to RNs from the Philippines? If that's true then that's bad news for me (and a few other people here). But I'm still praying because one poster in another thread said that she was assessed as an RN and was referred to the Program in Burwood. Too bad she doesn't reply anymore. I reckon she's busy with the BP already...

Hi, thanks sunchaser. :) I submitted my application last January (third week) but before sending my docs I rang the Board (3rd week of January too) and they said that they still accept overseas applicants. My primary reason though for calling at that time was to inquire whether they still accept overseas applicants in spite of the National Registration this coming July. When I introduced myself I mentioned that I'm from the Philippines, and that I am aware that most likely I will be referred to the Competency Assessment Program and she said "that's right". Likewise I called up the College of Nursing and they too said that they still have intakes till September.

The poster I was referring to was hotchickgrace and she started a new thread here at allnurses too. Unfortunately when I PMed her last month I didn't receive any reply so I'm guessing she's busy with the Program now. :)

Well, it's actually possible that during the past few feeks (after I gave them a call) they changed their policy. But I sure hope that that's not the case. :uhoh3:

When did you talk to them?

Hi narscathy.. pls find my other posts as i have listed there the accredited institution by NBV which conducts Initial Registration for overseas qualified nurse here in Victoria.. you can go to their websites and find out the exact tution fee for that program..

and by the way.. you will be on business short stay visa (up to the duration of your course, 3 months or so) in which you are not allowed to work...

Doin this by means of an agency.. you'll find that there's an extra fee for them. which is ofcourse in Australian dollar... better do it on your own if you can so as to save a lot of money...

Cheers!!

@chocokat79:

hi! my classmate and i were just talking about you during orientation this pm. maybe they changed it and are actually accepting now. as u can see, the board changes policies every 6 months. so they are probably accepting now.that's really great news. good luck to you! cheers! :)

hi chocokat, i submitted my initial application to nswnmb 1st week of november. so far no response yet from the board. my friend applied there before i did and she got a reply from the board after 5 months but she didnt push through with her application. so lets wait at least for 5 months from the time we submitted our application.

@hai_ho09: That long, huh? Oh well... :p. Yeah, let's just wait for it. By the way, may I ask why your friend didn't go through with the Program? Is he/she a second courser? How about you?
